is james franco the new jake gyllenhaal? insider sources say "i guess so"

playing the abortion card (elmo argonaut), Tuesday, 21 October 2008 21:19 (seventeen years ago)

Green screen Acting with James Franco is my favorite.

404 Error: Page Not Found, Wednesday, 22 October 2008 16:11 (seventeen years ago)

how is JF less "new" than Jake G? I think ppl are mostly excited about Milk, ie, at last he's in a non-shit movie and we'll find out if he can act.

Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 22 October 2008 16:14 (seventeen years ago)

ummmm, I guess I meant "newer," not less new. And of course I am speculating on the merits of Milk.

Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 22 October 2008 16:16 (seventeen years ago)

no dude, his current visibility has way more to do with his turn in pineapple express & the gucci frangrance campaign than the anticipation of him playing gay in a GVS movie (which i will see, but really now)

the whoopi goldberg variations (elmo argonaut), Wednesday, 22 October 2008 16:36 (seventeen years ago)

ah, "visibility" (ie, there's a Gucci fragrance?). if the Great Unwashed wants to leave Jake alone, fine with me.

Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 22 October 2008 16:40 (seventeen years ago)

are there any scenes of Emile Hirch and Franco sodomizing each other?

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 22 October 2008 16:43 (seventeen years ago)

lol "great unwashed" i thought we were talking abt fastidiously groomed homos here

oh, me, i'm not picky.

As in both those two instead of either/or? Because The Company is better than any movie Jakey's ever been in.

Eric H., Wednesday, 22 October 2008 17:24 (seventeen years ago)

James Franco was in The Company? I must have seen that before I knew who he was.

jaymc, Wednesday, 22 October 2008 17:27 (seventeen years ago)

I used to confuse him for the James Dean lookalike who blew Ron Rifkin in L.A. Confidential.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 22 October 2008 17:28 (seventeen years ago)

Franco was totally forgettable in The Company. proof: I forgot him.

also, Donnie Darko > The Company

Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 22 October 2008 17:42 (seventeen years ago)

and perhaps the same goes for Bubble Boy

still like modern herzog but he is kind of just having a laugh these days so i imagine franco will be perfect

StillAdvance, Thursday, 12 February 2015 12:44 (ten years ago)

not sure about how well he does dramatically, but as a comedic actor, he is pretty terrible. way too self aware and trying to show he is clever all the time. i couldnt watch all of pineapple express because of how awful he was.

i agree with this generally (he's gotten more painfully unfunny over the years, especially with Spring Breakers imo) but The Interview surprised me, prob his funniest performance since Freaks & Geeks.

http://www.salon.com/2015/05/07/james_francos_mcdonalds_op_ed_is_light_airy_and_full_of_privileged_sht/

have to admit i lol'd at "I generally like James Franco. He is funny, he’s a good actor, he wants to live an interesting life. But he is so, so dumb. Like, really dumb. Franco’s essay shows an utter lack of comprehension of any issues outside of the Palo Alto-Los Angeles tunnel in which he grew up. It is, like much of Franco’s previous non-acting work, light, and airy, and privileged bullshit."

I don't mean to generalise too much, but look at who wrote this. I can totally picture her being a Franco fan. And now these young women are trying to articulate what they, like, don't like about Jamie omigod..."he is sooo dumbbb"

F♯ A♯ (∞), Tuesday, 12 May 2015 19:39 (ten years ago)

©Oz Quiz© (Adam Bruneau), Wednesday, 13 May 2015 02:25 (ten years ago)

describing a hamburger as "airy" is so weird. it's like, floppy and greasy and stuff. maybe he took the patty out and just ate the bun?

he quipped with heat (amateurist), Wednesday, 13 May 2015 03:04 (ten years ago)

and i guess mcdonalds patties are not as heavy as others, but a burger patty is a pretty dense thing. not "airy" by any means.

he quipped with heat (amateurist), Wednesday, 13 May 2015 03:05 (ten years ago)

i think "so dumb" is p accurate tbh

♛ LIL UNIT ♛ (thomp), Wednesday, 13 May 2015 03:12 (ten years ago)

i mean it's james franco! in terms of 'people re whom it would not be a waste of time to set out my problems with their worldview in depth' he falls somewhere pretty near the bottom, nestled between bret easton ellis and hitler

♛ LIL UNIT ♛ (thomp), Wednesday, 13 May 2015 03:15 (ten years ago)

Salon article's probably dumber than anything Franco's done.

circa1916, Wednesday, 13 May 2015 03:30 (ten years ago)

To me airy implies the lack of burger in the burger patty. McD's burgers always seem like little hockey pucks that are mostly bread.

©Oz Quiz© (Adam Bruneau), Wednesday, 13 May 2015 04:05 (ten years ago)

i love the word dumb. it's like one of my favorite words.

surm, Wednesday, 13 May 2015 04:10 (ten years ago)

one month passes...

'the interview' did this thing that happens a lot with big budget comedies where it's like they're afraid the audience will be confused and unhappy if the movie stays silly and funny all the way through so they start grinding everything to a halt for joke-free dramatic and action sequences by the third act.

yea otm, I think this is unavoidable tho
also this type of movie needs to really nail its montages, not have them be overlong, etc and it did that v well so kudos
overall it was better than I expected
the best stuff is in the first half, and lots of it is franco's expressions & reaction shots, so great

Inviting Wisseau on stage and then stiff arming him when he lunged for the mic was a weird, uncomfortable moment.

Moodles, Monday, 8 January 2018 17:46 (seven years ago)

I know, right? It's almost as if he was just exploiting the guy or something.

Bobby Buttrock (Old Lunch), Monday, 8 January 2018 17:50 (seven years ago)

Ya think?

Moodles, Monday, 8 January 2018 17:51 (seven years ago)

It never occurred to me before but...yeah, I think he might be. Oh, man. I'm gonna need to sit with this for a minute.

Bobby Buttrock (Old Lunch), Monday, 8 January 2018 17:58 (seven years ago)

oh come on, I can't even tell if you guys are joking. He made the movie, he stars in the movie. Since when does the real life subject get to do the acceptance speech? James knows probably better than anyone that if he gave Tommy the mic he was not getting it back.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 8 January 2018 18:12 (seven years ago)

Yeah but he could have let him say hi or something. idk. It seemed rude to me too.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Monday, 8 January 2018 18:14 (seven years ago)

say hi

Ha.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 8 January 2018 18:42 (seven years ago)

It definitely seemed like a rude and obnoxious way to respond to a silly situation, especially since without Wisseau there would be no trophy.

Also OL, I'm maybe being oversensitive, but your responses come across as fairly condescending for no particular reason. I was making a fairly bland observation about that moment. I wasn't under any illusion that I was noting anything particularly deep. OTOH, I was well aware of the dynamic at play, but felt it was obvious enough not to state explicitly.

http://time.com/5092936/james-franco-golden-globes-2018/

James Franco accepted the Golden Globe for Best Actor, Musical or Comedy on Sunday night with a “Time’s Up” pin, which signifies support for the fight against sexual misconduct in Hollywood, on his black suit. But some 2018 Golden Globes viewers were upset to see Franco wearing the pin, saying they don’t believe The Disaster Artist actor has treated women with respect in the past.

...

Other Golden Globes viewers took to Twitter to criticize Franco for his alleged treatment of women in the past, including two women who made specific accusations against the actor. Some of the tweets focused on a 2014 incident in which Franco allegedly hit on a 17-year-old girl on Instagram.

everyone in town knows that james franco is a creep and that stories about his behavior were about to break. the hollywood foreign press knew it too but gave him an award anyway.

No condescension intended to you, Moodles, just a comment on Franco's apparent obliviousness wrt the power dynamic. Everything surrounding this movie has the uncomfortable whiff of an Improv Everywhere performance, and Franco trotting Wiseau out like a freak for everyone to ogle without allowing him a moment of agency was pretty gross. Particularly compounded with Franco standing in front of Wiseau and affecting Wiseau's voice to tell Wiseau's story.

Bobby Buttrock (Old Lunch), Monday, 8 January 2018 19:29 (seven years ago)

Just for entertainment's sake. You don't put Tommy Wiseau onstage in front of 19 million viewers and not let him speak.

jmm, Monday, 8 January 2018 19:44 (seven years ago)

xp

Fair enough

Moodles, Monday, 8 January 2018 19:46 (seven years ago)

no shit. so weird inviting a guy on stage, not letting him take the mic, and then immediately imitating his voice

think Franco legit did a great job with this movie but come on, let Tommy have his moment. Franco's been up there enough. an unfiltered Tommy Wiseau on stage is one of the few things that would've made me want to watch the Golden Globes

frogbs, Monday, 8 January 2018 19:50 (seven years ago)

Are there allegations against him other than that he hit on a 17-year-old (i.e. legal, although too young for a 30-something to be hitting on) girl?

IF (Terrorist) Yes, Explain (man alive), Monday, 8 January 2018 20:35 (seven years ago)

Cute #TIMESUP pin James Franco. Remember the time you pushed my head down in a car towards your exposed penis & that other time you told my friend to come to your hotel when she was 17? After you had already been caught doing that to a different 17 year old?

in la yep

this was actually fairly well known among actors in la i'd say

infinity (∞), Friday, 12 January 2018 19:08 (seven years ago)

it's not as uncommon as you'd think

there is another guy, he's a choreographer actually, in la and i won't mention his name because he is not hollywood famous but he has worked with some big names, and he is trying to make it big so he probably keeps up with his online presence

but anyway he did a lot of intense erotic and sexual art performances under the guise of "it's art"

how do i know this

because a couple of my exes were dancers and one happened to attend an audition/rehearsal and the other knew that he was a creepy motherfucker
