Supporting / Being supported by your partner - classic or dud? In a long-term relationship, do you think of things (and money?) as "mine"/"yours" or "ours"?

you gotta have a jay oh bee if you wanna be with me.

Only time there was a real imbalance was when i was unemployed for a year. it was sort of fun doing all the cooking and decorating and stuff, but it DOES go unappreciated and is a drag. so dud i'd say.

I am a great believer in mutual financial independence. Takes care of the 'mine'/'yours'/'ours' question, at least. If you're settled and serious, though, then going in on a big purchase together (house, etc.) makes perfect sense. Your standards may vary -- my dad was the breadwinner through and through in my family, and everything worked out well enough.

I thought it was classic when I had a big-bucks job. Now that I have a slightly-more-than-average-bucks job, it's not nearly as classic.

I plan to marry The Bachelor because all Harvard men are rich rich rich like Dan Perry. Look for my triumphant victory in the finale.*

*never watched The Bachelor, but the idea of all of these working class women killing themselves to get the attention of some Ivy League scion is way beyond rub.

i don't like feeling like i have to rely on someone else for anything. i like to look after my own. i would support someone else though, if i had the finance, if they didn't take it for granted, and if i was interested in getting into a relationship.

I started to answer this a few times and kept deleting it because I was afraid it reflected poorly on me. Basically, I wouldn't be into dating someone who was loaded; I'd be intimidated or emasculated or something.

I was told last night that I look like the guy from The Bachelor (is there more than one?). I don't, though.

In my two serious long-term relationships my attitude was always "what's mine is mine." However, in both cases I had the better job and the bigger bank account.

I suppose it's part of my character. My therapist and I have established that my money and how I handle it are a big part of my self-image. It's actually kind of sad how I metaphorically lock myself up in a bank vault.

Anything we owned before we moved in together seems to stay as "mine"/"yours", everything else (including the house) is "ours". Music will ALWAYS be "mine"
