I've been watching all the episodes of Samurai Jack in a row since there was a thread revival last week and the episode I was JUST going to start watching is called "Jack And The Haunted House"

favorite hayride moment:
guy in jason mask is supposed to chase us with a chainsaw, but he cant get it started. so he chases us anyway and hops on the back of the truck with us, busts out a flask and says 'goddamn ive been waiting all night for this!' i think i was 9 or 10 when this happened
― the sir weeze, Wednesday, 15 October 2008 18:36 (seventeen years ago)
in other words, i greatly desire a job working at a hayride

Every year I promise to get to more of these and every year I make it to maybe 1 or 2.
going to the soap factory haunted basement again tonight, awesome every year.
this room from last year might have been the most disorienting and upsetting iirc:

I worked at one of these in SLC in 2003. Six hours a night for seven or so weeks & I got $600 for it. That was the most draining fucking job ever. OTOH I got to wear makeup of glass coming out of my face, not every job has that.
― The Ten Things I Hate About Commandments (Abbbottt), Friday, 15 October 2010 00:19 (fifteen years ago)
$600 for seven weeks??
― dayo, Friday, 15 October 2010 00:21 (fifteen years ago)
They wouldn't let girls use the chainsaws. I forget the reason for this particular glass ceiling.
― The Ten Things I Hate About Commandments (Abbbottt), Friday, 15 October 2010 00:21 (fifteen years ago)
It was probably fewer than seven weeks...we started in mid-September tho iirc. $600 (before taxes) was defs all I got paid.

Or is that redundant?
I went to the Soap Factory last year, and was all nervous because I'm a total wuss... and it wasn't scary at all. But I hear they kinda held back last year because they were too over-the-top the year before.
― lindseykai, Friday, 7 October 2011 03:18 (fourteen years ago)
do the eastern state penitentiary haunted house
jjj i beg you to do this one year. we can down a pitcher of nipsy russells beforehand.

Everyone in the scarebros pics is hanging on to each other like a conga line, do they make them do that? It was weirding me out at first, I was like "man, lotta fright bromance going on here".
― Silent Hedgehogs (Trayce), Friday, 7 October 2011 05:47 (fourteen years ago)
I'm assuming that where the photos are taken is in complete darkness, so most people creep through holding on to each other. The photo is then a sudden flash whenever the scary thing happens off camera.

― triple black belt in ILX-fu (snoball), Friday, 7 October 2011 12:14 (fourteen years ago)
I want to know what scary thing they're looking at.
I love haunted houses in theory but in practice, I go through them like the most terrified of the bros - head down, looking at nothing, as fast as I can. The last haunted house I went to was somewhere in a field in northern DE and my friends and I were really very high and there was no line, just the railings showing where the line would be, and we went through the empty line railings like the above pictured bros, all clinging together in terror, sure that something was going to come shrieking out of the fields at us. But it was just a line.
― pullapartsquirrel (Jenny), Friday, 7 October 2011 12:28 (fourteen years ago)

― the tax avocado (DJP), Friday, 7 October 2011 12:43 (fourteen years ago)
At the flickr stream linked to in Ned's link, there are a ton more of these and a couple tv commercial spots showing the people actually getting scared.

That's so interesting, people go in there "prepared" for mummies to pop out of the wall or whatever, and instead they get you with a "real life" fear that we have all been (very rightly) conditioned to respond to in a very immediate way!
― WE DO NOT HAVE "SECRET" "MEETINGS." I DO NOT HAVE A SECOND (Laurel), Friday, 7 October 2011 16:16 (fourteen years ago)

I was saying something very similar elsewhere! It's the most likely terrible thing that will happen to me and it taps into some lizzard-brain terror with the modern equivalent of "LION GONNA EATCHU" because it's a big, deadly, ever present threat. Genius.
