has anyone ever made anything good in a microwave? like, from scratch--no reheating or instant foods allowed.

Good simple things that can be made in a microwave

Corn on the cob
- Leave the husk on (you can rinse or take off the outermost layer if it's dirty).
- Time to cook will vary depending on your microwave, but about 4 minutes for two ears should do it.

Egg
- Break a raw egg into a pyrex glass measuring cup, cover with saran wrap.
- Microwave about 2 minutes (until egg is cooked).

Golden Syrup Sponge - not perfect, but convenient as it only takes a few minutes.

Microwave mug cake. The original recipe has milk, sugar, and cocoa powder, which I subbed hot chocolate mix for. But it's better as the original. I've also been working out a cinnamon coffeecake version, but it's not ready to publish yet.

Seriously! Like it's too hard to move eggs around a hot pan? I can see microwaving them only if you're at work.

Well, a microwaved egg is a different thing. You don't need any oil or butter, so it's marginally healthier. And if timed right, you get a nice fluffy consistency - and it also gives you a nice round hockey puck-like shape if cooked in a glass measuring cup, which is perfect for putting on an English muffin with some cheese and Canadian bacon.

Some interesting ideas in that Bittman article (and the attached recipes).

o. nate OTM - having grown up in household where, from the age of 3 (the debut of the conventional microwave oven in new zealand), my mother cooked EVERYTHING in the microwave and forever fucked up my eating habits, one thing i actually do like microwaved is an egg. altho i think you have to prick the yolk or it explodes.

my parents still have the cookbook that came with our amana radarange . i don't think we ever made any of the recipes, but according to the book it was possible to do standing rib roasts and stuff in it.

actually, they still have that microwave. it looks like a miniature oven and weighs at least 50lbs.

and also self-saucing chocolate pudding; it takes about 8 mins to cook in a ring mould and is DELICIOUS. not sure on the exact measurements tho:

flour, baking powder, half white/half brown sugar, cocoa, pinch of salt, all sifted together. milk, butter, one egg, all beaten in. spoon into ring mould. cocoa and brown sugar sifted together and then sprinkled over cake-mix, then boiling water poured over. microwave on med-high for 8-10mins.

Eggs in the microwave can be A++. Unfortunately, I have yet to get them to cook evenly, so I stick with olden way.

the trick is to lower the power level and cook for longer

some of the new microwaves claim to be really good at even cooking using science

ILX Systern (ken c), Friday, 17 October 2008 16:14 (seventeen years ago)

we used to have one of those microwave egg-boiler things: a big plastic egg with a metal lining, you filled it half with water and sat the eggs in a metal tray inside it. but because of the well-known result of using metal in a microwave, you had to make sure the plastic casing was closed properly so metal was exposed.

our egg-boiler had seen a few dishwasher battles and the two halves didn't screw together right, so one day when i tried to use it, i ended up blowing off the microwave door and spraying cooking egg literally all over the kitchen.
