I'm going to a 30th birthday party on Saturday and - shock horror - it's in a BAR! Is this good?

MarkH, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

So, private parties in bars - classic or dud? Bar's got a v. strange name too.....

MarkH, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Toms birthday do in a bar was very nice. HOWEVER I was in WELL DODGE Covent Garden LAD BAR 'Punch and Judy' last night with co-worker and his brothers pissed up mates showing off their David Beckham shades and had to escape after one gin (ONEGIN!) as it was the IMMENSE HORROR. Depends on the type of BAR.

Sarah, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Punch and Judy.Urrrghh. I had the horror of going there once too - never again.

Jonnie, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Surely the Punch And Judy is a pub. A nasty, nasty, nasty pub but pub nonetheless.

I have gone to good parties in bars, and bad. Hey its not the venue, its the company. And partially the venue. If its a private party then there should be no problem. (Only other associated problems with bars is potential for packedness, noise, cost and potential surliness of staff - but then most of these can be problems in pubs too....)

Pete, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

actually it isn't such a strange name really. It's called Horse. It's on Westminster Bridge Road and is apparently not far from Waterloo station. Anyone ever been there?

MarkH, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Bars are good because they don't look at you funny when you order high alcohol cocktails.

Ed, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Drugs refernce ahoy!!!

Pete, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Pete is quite right about parties in bars. The only reason they don't look at you funny when you order cocktails in bars is cos they are larfing hard to themselves about how much money they are going to charge you for this cocktail & how long they are going to make you wait for it while they fanny around pretending they are great, ahem, mixologists.

Emma, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Emma in agreeing with me shockah!

I enjoyed the last party I went toin a bar which was at the Living Room - admittedly quite some time ago now.

Pete, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Emma, you are tarnishing my veneer of sophistication.

Ed, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ha!

Pete, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Bars are OK for parties - the whole point of bars seems to be pretending that an ordinary night out is an event (and charging accordingly har) so they are fine for when it's an actual event. Private hire is U & K though but to be honest it is for a lot of pubs too particularly if it's a weekend birthday.

Tom, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I thought that would shock you Pete. I had a weird night dreaming that my entire life flashed in front of me on my mobile phone screen (and it was mostly magazines with pictures of earrings) then dreaming that I had a screw sticking out of my foot. So I have re-evaluated my whole existence.

Emma, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Parties in bars are good if they involve large family reunions. Ok you have to meet relatives but you tend to get lots of free beer. Otherwise parties in bars are a bit meh.

Ronan, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Emma's life story could be the killer app for 3G mobile technology. Or was it all in black on grey text

N., Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Actually it was horribly like an Argos catalogue (+ in full glorious technicolour). I was really pissed off as I was trying to call someone to pick me up but the phone would not stop running through my entire life.

Emma, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Were they playing Status Quo as well. Its all well and good re- evaluating your whole life, but I think deciding to agree with me is not going to last more than about half a day.

Pete, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

There wasn't any music. And certainly not The Quo. I have already stopped agreeing with you after you started giving away my possessions on the email.

Emma, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh dear, Ronan has decided to use my initials as a perjorative term.

MarkH, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

At least you're not going out to Maxwell's. Thank your lucky socks.

alix, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well, yes. I used to have a housemate who worked at Old Orleans. She told me that the staff there used to have ongoing battles with the staff of Maxwell's which involved each lot invading the other bar and shooting their rivals with water pistols.

MarkH, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh dear. That sounds dreadful.

RickyT, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That sounds EXCELLENT! Were patrons encouraged to join in?

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

DId they have to wear pieces of flair?

Pete, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I read this subject line as "Panties in Bars"...

Also today I typed in "I%20Love%20Everythong". Watch out ladies for today I am an out-of-control knicker freak.

Tracer hand, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Wait, you *type* in the ILE URL? They're called "bookmarks"...

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yes but ILM/E switching is achieved this way, by me, sometimes..... blubber sob

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

classic. especially when the party ends with you lying barely conciously just clear of the bar doorway at 3am while your friends try to railslide across the ledge over you with their majickal railsliding shoes.

mikey bidness, Friday, 26 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

HAHAHAHA Tracer just said the funniest thing evah hey Tracer fancy a pint?

Sarah, Friday, 26 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I can't say I've thought about it that way but if the pint were willing I might give it a go.

Tracer Hand, Friday, 26 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

(Perve - that was not as funny as 'I Love Everythong')

Sarah, Friday, 26 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yes i apologize. i think after a brief incandescent moment of unrecoverable wit I've reverted back to usual crap. i rely on my subconscious for these things you know.

Tracer Hand, Friday, 26 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Just lay back and release your inner kicker-freak.

Dan Perry, Friday, 26 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

If my inner kicker freak ever teamed up with Emma's screw-foot we would defeat all comers on Primrose Hill!! I could kick things and she could give everyone gangrene with her slide tackles.

anyway parties in bars = dud, just because I'm sick of them. In New York everyone thinks their apartments are too small to throw pah-ties in so you get the old "join me for drinks at ____ to celebrate ____" and I'm like "well that's what I'd be doing anyway minus the adoration of YOU"
