List of musical artists

I need a list of artists, say a few hundred, that would cover a good chunk of the bands that ILX is into. Anyone point me at one? This is for a little "swap shop" sort of site thing that was mooted on ILM. Let's not get carried away now with list frenzy (that's ILM's job), I just need something to get it started. The site will be able to add new artists, but it's never going to get started if people find themselves having to add My Bloody Valentine, New Order, Kraftwerk, etc.

There's a thread on ILM about exactly this, Alan, pillage it!

Tom, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No don't list here! grr, should have said that up front. i want ONE long list from somewhere. something that I can use as a start of a database, i.e. nice and consistent, not an "english list".

Alan Trewartha, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Woops!

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Alan - you could go to the classic or dud section on ILM and delete all the "classic or dud" bits?

Tom, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

great idea, thanks

Don't a lot of people on ILM have their CDs in big ol' Access databases? Why not ask one of them to give it up? I don't have a list of any sort so don't ask me.

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

This is a rum question.

N., Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

why so?

Alan Trewartha, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It reminds me of when someone rang our department to ask how many famous people there were in the world.

I realise you have your 'swap shop' reason, but still.

N., Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

how many did you tell them?

michael, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

There are 9 famous people in the world. It's a complex arrangement, involving body doubles, mirrors and intrigue.

Include 2 Many DJs / Fucking DeWaele Bros. Radiohead? Ryan Adams? All three are on me hate list. heh.

oh bugger, "Various Artists". this artists database isn't all it's cracked up to be you know.

Alan T, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Bloody MBV weren't in the ILM C/D. Argh. Ah well, I now have a good start with 200 odd artists.

Bloody MBV weren't in the ILM C/D. Argh.

They transcend such notions. Though there was this...

falco

geeta, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Alan, as someone with all his stuff on a database, I can download a list of over 8,000 acts in whatever format you want (within reason - Excel, csv, that sort of thing). I can guarantee that there are many that we would not call ILX types, but no harm in that is there? Well, maybe: depends how this thing will work. Let me know if I can help.

I second Falco!

Hari, several years ago it wasn't so bad (months, but I enjoyed it). If that vanished I couldn't start again, but keeping them up to date is no great burden. It's got over 62k tracks listed in it now!

eight years pass...
