when American Werewolf in London came out I recall it seeming very up-to-the-minute and now. Watching it on Sunday, first time in 20-odd years., I realised it was in fact EVEN MORE OUT OF DATE than Death Line, a film made ten years previously: eg it makes the the 80s predate the 70s...

Are you suggesting that werewolfs no longer stalk the Peak district?

N., Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That bit seemed like a deliberate fond parody: it was the stuff in the underground itself that now seemed ages old.

haha who will make an Estuary remake of TREMORS? (they have big bones = they swim through the Living Arth)

mark s, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

oops

Surely 80s things are still more obviously jarring to us than 70s things when it comes to seeming 'dated'. (ie. we have made our peace with the 70s and they now look nice and warm and fuzzy whereas the 80s are too close for comfort). I have never seen Death Line but it sounds very frightening.

Tips On Dating: Get the day right when talking about events. Any future historian would date your watching of AWIL as the 21st April - whereas the film was shown on Monday, 22nd April on Channel Five. (Mark S will trump me with watching it on video no doubt).

I think Nick's got something there. Films set in the seventies are seen as period films, those in the eighties still seem part of the modern canon. More films are now being set in the eighties - though oddly getting much period detail wrong (Bully Elliot was terrible on this - National Express coaches were all wrong). Also the turnover and items which can look dated in the tube (namely adverts which date very quickly) and the overhaul of nearly all the Underground rolling stock would help hasten this sensation.

Nah, it's got Donald Pleasence and Norman Rossington doing the same comedy coppers routine as also seen in AWIL = not that scary.

Could you explain how it could seem *more* dated than Death Line? I could understand if you said 'as dated'. Anyway 1981 wasn't that different to 1973. Things don't change suddenly upon the turning of a decade. Is 2002 that different to 1996?

David, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's completely different. In 1996, people were buying Kula Shaker records.

N., Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's completely different. In 1996, people were buying Kula Shaker records.

Some people probably still are, although they're not so easy to obtain. But outside pop music, the general fabric of everything is pretty similar.

David, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Also, I am constantly amazed by how quickly the general population's fashions really do change. Watch a TV programme from 1998 and you will see how crap many clothes and esp. haircuts look. I'd say 3 years is about the cut off point for this, but others might have sharper eyes.

N., Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Look out of the window and see how crap they are now. But yes I know what you mean. There are certain clothes and shoes that get done to death in the course of about a year and those would then date very obviously. Eg those horrid Acupuncture trainers (peaked around 1997 I think), and Camper shoes/boots (and their myriad imitations) now.

David, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ar god. I'm wearing my horrible acupunture trainers right now. they are in a state of disrepair and I'm only wearing them because my other trainers rub my feet and will have to go. Plus, I need something cushiony because the sea has made my heels crack in a painful style. didn't realise that they were so badly outmoded. Oh well. when did I ever bother fashion?

alix, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I am dated.

Dr. C, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"acupuncture trainers"?! explain!

geeta, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Acupuncture - British brand of trainers (sneakers). Big and clumpy looking, predominantly grey, often incorporating giant velcro flaps.

David, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

But never needles.

N., Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

chris, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I like the fact that if you ignore the parentheses that this thread looks like "tips on dating mark s" which I think is very useful information for everyone to know.
