A close friend ups and leaves

THE BASTARD.

No really, it's a crazy mixed up thing when this happens. A close friend, and Canadian, that has lived in London for almost 10 years now, is moving back (actually to the other coast) to live with his sweetheart (that's a whole other friendsreunited thread right there!) and it's snucked up on me -- he's off on Monday.

We've all been upfront with him -- that we're really pleased for him, it's the right thing, but that we'll miss the selfish get. We'll be partying some this w/e, and we're making him a scrapbook of british things, photos, tickets and general stuff that means stuff to our little group.

A question then:

Had a hard time when this happens? What did you do for a send off?

I have had numerous friends leave. As a lot of our/ my friends are Japanese, they only stay here in Belgium for a couple of years. My best friend left four years ago. I miss her dearly but I realized then (and now) that I will rarely if ever see her again. Life moves on. So it goes. We had a big lunch. I still remember stuffing myself with cheese trying to ignore the fact it was the last time I'd see her. Bah. We still email but it isn't the same, now is it?

My best friend has left me to go to Australia. Fortunately it's only for a year, but even so it's a massive change and I miss him like crazy. I mean, I could be dead by the time he gets back. Or my leg could be amputated. And he wouldn't be there. I'd be a whole other person. Or he could 'find himself' through some wanky backpacker shit. I fear change. Undergoing transition w/o significant other = eep.
