Wasabi

Classick or dud? Recently I've been trying to challenge myself to eat as much wasabi paste as possible as a sort of character- building exercise - am I a mentalist? It's like an ice cream brain freeze, except infinitely better. (wasabi ice cream, btw, = classic)

Mark this on your Top 100 Cruelest Practical Jokes Ever..

Friends serve this one friend a nice big scoop of Green Tea Ice Cream... except it's a big circular wad of detubed wasabi. Watch pain and horror of victim. Watch ensuing laughter. Watch subsequent paens of guilt on jokers' faces.

Brian MacDonald, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Classic... and I know that exact feeling of needing to ingest the stuff. Also classic are wasabi crackers.

Honda, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Y'know, I'm beginning to suspect that one strange manifestation of Japanese nationalism is that all traditional Japanese foods end up scientifically deemed Really Good For You. That may not actually be true with wasabi, but take Green Tea, where the fluoride content (bad) probably negates the effects of antioxidents that might have actually been deactivated by other chemicals in the tea anyway. And fish, man, are like sponges for nasty chemicals in the water. This really has no bearing on anything at all.
Wasabi = practical jokes waiting to happen.

Aw come on, dan - it's a Western conspiracy, not an Eastern one - bread might be toxic now, according to swedish researchers! now go eat more wasabi - it will save us all!!

geeta, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

eating wads of the stuff is definitely mentalist [oh look who's talking, i recently challenged some boys to a chilli eating contest. and won]. enjoy it, in small amounts, w good yummy sushi and things. a large lump of it'll make your nose tingle and possibly bring on a sneezing fit...though if you like that sort of thing...

petra jane, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

and is the flouride in the green tea itself, Dan, or just the tap water you use to make it?

petra jane, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I was pleased when as a birthday present , The Barnacle ate a wad of wasabi. But he was very heartburned after.

Mike Hanle y, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The tea.

Dan I., Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Wasabi ice cream??? Where!! How mental! Wow! I want to try some! Wasabi is so far way too strong for me and I go very easy on it then again I am a big old woos when it comes to the more SPICY foodstuphs. But wasabi ice cream!! Wow!

Sarah, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

wasabi added to mash = num

Alan Trewartha, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

BO!!!! Alang thats probably the best idea in the world EVAH and I shall be testing this out TONIGHT!!!! Ok I do not actually have any wasabi and my wholemeal pasta cravings are IMMENSE and mixing the mash + pasta is one carbohydrate update too far. But STILL it sounds BRILL!

Sarah, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

M&S Wasabi is the wussiest wasabi evah, even a baby could eat a bowlful of it and not even bat an eyelid.

Emma, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

(mash + wasabi) = (urgent + key)!!!!!!

katie, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Geeta, my brother and I do this ALL THE TIME. Also, every Friday at work we go out for sushi and I strike fear into the hearts of my coworkers by dumping the entire hunk of wasabi into my soy sauce. MMMMMMMMM....

Dan Perry, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

what about WASAKE?

Samantha, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

But Dan, I thought that was always the proper way to enjoy those two elements anyway, ie together. Does that mean your coworkers are timid sheep? ;-)

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yes. (More complete answer; most of them only use a quarter to half of their wasabi. I end up with soy-tinged wasabi sludge to dip my sushi in... AND I LOVE IT!)

Dan Perry, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yes i never get enough with my sushi. i like a lot. and it's best with avacado (+ the sushi, pref). i like it's system-clearing properties even if it's not actually good for me, that wasabi-blast seems good. especially when i have a "head cold" or whatever.

three months pass...
have you ever tried "real" WASABI ?? not that horseraddish crap

Mr. WASABI, Sunday, 4 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

one month passes...
i only discovered wasabi like 3 days ago (yeah yeah i know) and it is so the most classic thing ever ever ever. my new diet = sushi every lunchtime + stupidly expensive deli sandwiches for dinner (this is to combat the old diet which pretty muched equalled burgers for dinner every night since getting to boston).

but but anyway wasabi!! i want to have it with everything! wasabi ice cream really shd exist though i fear it is a fiction.

ohmygod wasabi mash sounds so u+k i am tempted to go out and buy cooking equipment RIGHT NOW in order to have some + thus break my mentalist "no cooking in america" rulez. has anyone tried it? i imagine it's like horseradish mash (num) but even better numnum...

oh and where's good for sushi in cambridge? cos i'm getting addicted but only via the (presumably) crappy sushi they have in the cafeteria here.

toby (tsg20), Monday, 30 September 2002 20:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Good sushi in Cambridge? Does Shilla do sushi? I know they sell sake...

The Porter Exchange Mall in Porter Square has a good sushi place AND a good tempura place in it, or at least it did three years ago. Also, Porter Square has ANNA'S TAQUERIA which is godlike and amazing and cheap (but completely unrelated to sushi).

What is a paen of guilt (and can we eat it with wasabi)?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 30 September 2002 20:25 (twenty-three years ago)

The only justification for vegetarian 'sushi'. Classic.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

have you ever tried "real" WASABI ?? not that horseraddish crap

real Wasabi is indeed much nicer than the powdered stuff - though incredibly expensive. the last time I had it, it was $20, and the grated it on a shark fin for you.

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 22:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Wasabi was also a pretty entertaining Jean Reno action film, slightly better than I expected it to be. If only for the scene where he decks a kid and sends him flying down some stairs. It's part Stephen Chiao, part Wong Jing.

ham on rye (ham on rye), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 23:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Misreading "Jean" as "Janet": C/D

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 25 September 2003 00:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I totally second the 'ingesting disgusting amounts of wasabi as a test of manhood' thing. Also, when I'm flying over to the US to see Caitlin, I'll eat the whole tube of Korean Air Hot Sauce (I fly Korean, because they're the cheapest) that they give you with your Bi Bim Bab and see how long I can go before I have to call the hostess for a glass of water.

It passes the time.

An understandable error.

Hee I watched Wasabi last night. Jean Reno does interesting things with golf clubs. And my god the DDR...

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 25 September 2003 07:19 (twenty-two years ago)

where the hell'd my Jean reno pic go?
