Triggerfest Saturday: VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

The Triggerfest afternoon activities/pub crawl on Saturday, we've decided ("we" = "Pete and I"), is going to be the opportunity for one of our longest-cherished ideas to take wing, i.e. PUB BIG BROTHER aka "Trig Brother" (or "Starvivor" if you insist).

The idea will be that ten contestants get 'evicted' one by one, one at each stop. Evictions will be based on nominations and a vote by everyone involved (seeing as more than ten people can join in the afternoon's fun, obviously). If you get evicted you go to the last pub, there to await other evictees. (The last pub will also be as near as possible to the other pubs, so non-contestants can go and hang out there too)

So, Pete, Alex T and I are in - who else? Things will kick off at around 2 and go on all afternoon in central London. It's very important to note that this will all be in GOOD FUN and NOT MALICIOUS - nominations for 'eviction' will be based around completion of 'tasks', conversational faux pas etc. etc. and not around personal popularity. We did a variant of this on a stag night last year and it worked very well.

So, anyway - prospective contestants or 'audience' sign up below (In other words: who's coming?)

Tom, Sunday, 29 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Wel, I'm in. But then I'm organising it and fixing it so that I win. Heh heh.

Pete, Sunday, 29 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I would remind you that I tried manipulating it during Stag Brother and ended up humiliatingly in 'Dean Position'. Cheaters never prosper!

Tom, Sunday, 29 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tom, why didn't you just tell me that, you are sitting a foot away. Sometimes I think this interweb has gone mad. Don't you think so Alex?

Pete, Sunday, 29 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah, but I had to wait for you to finish with the keyboard before I could post this. See you both on Saturday though...

alex thomson, Sunday, 29 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I am so sick of your presence after two days of non-stop lying Pete that communicating via ILE is the only way I can tolerate you without coming to blows.

Also the more replies we get up here early doors the more likely we are to fool people into thinking this is an exciting must-read thread.

Tom, Sunday, 29 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hey! - this looks like an exciting, must-read thread.

the pinefox, Sunday, 29 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Can we count on your attendance then PF?

Tom, Sunday, 29 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I liked the idea of this until I read that evictions weren't to be treated as a popularity contest. I mean, how dull! Who'd have watched Big Brother if Helen had got kicked for conversational faux pas and Dean were to win through successful completion of sugarcube mountains?

Nick, Sunday, 29 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Next Saturday? Not sure I'll be around.

(I'm going to see a reformed Johnny Hates Jazz, supported by Love & Money who still have two original members remaining.)

the pinefox, Sunday, 29 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

kicked = kicked out. Obviously. I mean if she'd been repeatedly kicked for conversational faux pas then that woulf have been highly entertaining. I mean awful. God, what have I become? Robin, you were right - watching reality TV debases us all.

Nick, Sunday, 29 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

One pub = unusual. Ten in one day = sign of seventh seal, I think. (I realise I'd only see 10 if I got into top two, Starvivor-wise... So no contradiction there.)

I am in fact *fairly* likely planning a mercy dash across country to watch fauré's requiem with my convalescent mum even tho she thinks I'm not coming (because I told her yesterday I wasn't coming, and my sister had not yet applied maximal emo-blackmail thumbscrews). Back Sunday/Monday morning latest: so will I miss Ned?

mark s, Sunday, 29 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

This idea sounds interesting. I'd like to hear how it pans out.

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Sunday, 29 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'll be coming, but as for being a contestant...hmm...not sure.

DG, Sunday, 29 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Re Pinefox

(I'm going to see a reformed Johnny Hates Jazz, supported by Love & Money who still have two original members remaining.)

Pinefox Where the hell do you find out about ghastly gems like that ! do you go for the comedy factor? - are you on a secret mailing list for naff 80s pop & rock reunions? enlighten us !

First Go West/ Deacon Blue and now Johnny Hates Jazz/Love & Money.

Whatever next Curiosity Killed the Cat and Then Jerico?

DJ Martian, Sunday, 29 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Will probably be around later, so an idea of which pubs to lurk in after 7 or 8-ish would be useful.

Pinefox - for goodness sake, this JHJ gig is a wind-up, surely?

Dr. C, Sunday, 29 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Re: this JHJ gig is a wind-up, surely?

Maybe there is another logic of going to these 80s reunion concerts as they may be a good place to meet "respectable single ladies" in the late 20s/early 30s?

Where else can Pinefox meet up with single ladies into melodic guitar pop ala Love & Money, Deacon Blue and Lloyd Cole.

Just a thought.

DJ Martian, Sunday, 29 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Is DJ Martian beginning to twig the secret problem inherent in his basically admirable and heroic support of [insert block of names of 15000 DJ Martian-type bands]?

ie you get loadsa kudos, but only from other kewl guys just like yourself? but no one attends who anyone else attending wd want to have sex with?

I am making mean jokes abt losers on a thread proposing a themed pub crawl

(DJ Martian I do not think you are a loser. Sometimes the joke calls and the call cannot be refused.)

mark s, Sunday, 29 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

didn't one of JHJ die in a car crash or something....not that I'm interested.

I won't be going of course, one of the joys of living in the North (aah, but at least the air is fresh). Pity, as it sounds intriguing.

Billy Dods, Sunday, 29 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I knew I shouldn't have let those boys spend the weekend together hatching evil plans. How exactly will this work? Will the general public phone-in to choose between nominees be a vote among the pub customers? Have you thought this through properly? Will there be chickens?

What is a conversational faux pas, Tom?

Emma, Monday, 30 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yes we have thought it through properly Emma because we already did it last year and it worked. Chickens = people who don't play.

Tom, Monday, 30 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Is this in any way related to the Blue Posts pubs cos if it is then I will be very obnoxious as then I can piss off to Oxford St early doors and do some shopping and join you all later. I volunteer myself.

Emma, Monday, 30 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I volunteer. I have plenty of devious schemes I shall ruminate over in my little brane to be the very best - like no-one ever was! I expect to be voted out first for talking about Pokémon. If Tom's beard is also a contestant, I will try to have Helen/Paul love/hate thing with it, to keep the viewers excited. So, how about it?

sarah, Monday, 30 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Aw, I wanted to be helen to your po' starbar. Go on then, I'm in...

carsmilesteve, Thursday, 2 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

If Johnny Hates Jazz got back together, I would be VERY HAPPY. They could play "Shattered Dreams" for hours and hours and I would smile.

Dan Perry, Thursday, 2 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dan, you are a sick bastard.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Thursday, 2 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

OK

Contestant Line-Up (definite): Ned, Jane, Emma, Sarah, Pete, Tim H, Carsmile, Magnus.

(Possible): Alex T? DG? Nick D? Marianna? Anyone else??

Speak now to fill one of the last two places, or turn up and spectate - timetable on the Triggerfest thread.

I will be Davina.

Tom, Friday, 3 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm afraid I can't make your crazy 'triggerfest'

Nick, Friday, 3 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Blimey, Tom, how difficult can it be to find 10 people to go to the pub on a Saturday afternoon when it's not footie season? Maybe you should've promised some free stuff or strippers or something.

Karaoke now has the added thrill of maybe getting blown up by karaoke hating terrorists. Like Karaoke Roulette.

Emma, Friday, 3 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I know, we are obviously really hateful.

Maybe the competitive aspect is putting people off.

Incidentally judging by his silence it seems like the Pinefox might ACTUALLY BE at a Johnny Hates Jazz / Love And Money gig which I had assumed was made-up.

Tom, Friday, 3 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

If you get desperate I'm willing... sorry that's my chat up line. But I can come along and play the Penny role. I even promise not to let my towel slip or squeal. Well ok I may squeal...

Martin, Friday, 3 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'll be in attendance, but probably only in a non-competitive capacity.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Friday, 3 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Wait, has Stevie T said he's in or not? He *must* attend, surely.

Jane's response upon being told she's a constestant: "I'm not surprised."

Ned Raggett, Friday, 3 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I AM NOT A SICK BASTARD. I just like that song a lot. I mean, that melody is awesome, and the sleazy bossanova thing going on in the rhythm section just makes it better.

Okay, maybe I am a sick bastard. I can live with that.

Dan Perry, Friday, 3 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Alright, I'm in. But I don't have enough money to drink vast amounts, so there had better not be challenges like that, or I'll cry.

DG, Friday, 3 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My sister's Ka is better: filial duty calls after all. Play nice folks.
