I only vaguely remember: Alan has talked about it at length in some interviews. I have a notion it was a Roman demigod/prophet-snake, that was eventually revealed to be a high class glove puppet. Alan's point is something to do with it not mattering what you worship, that it's something to do with the acts and rituals of worship that matters. Don't ask me to make sense of it.
