mysticism

i'm thinking (not very clearly) about peter ackroyd and iain sinclair, i guess, and maybe ian penman to some degree (though poss only because i remember him bigging up iain s in the guardian a while back). anyway, i like them both quite a bit, but i'm always bothered by the ley lines etc; i think mostly because such things are clearly rub. but on the other hand perhaps they should be discussed because of their influences on us (now my ignorance is really shining through!).

so, umm, someone say something that clarifies this a bit!

also has just occurred to me that i am completely certain that ackroyd + sinclair have large beards, but penman is clean shaven, though i have never seen photos of any of them. google picture search here i come!

it appears that my facial hair judgements were rather off the mark.

any mysticism in sinclair, and possibly ackroyd, strikes me as aesthetic/emotional rather than 'spiritual', it is this which allows it to be got away with. i cant really expand on this that well though. interesting question

Ackroyd's interest in psychogeography is quite cool I think. I don't agree it's just aesthetic.. I think under the right circs old pete would don a robe and git dowsin. He just doesn't hang out in the right circles.

Anyone familiar with comic writer Alan Moore here? He was an old friend, but as far as I'm concerned he's gone completely off the rails with all this stuff, though I admit that I do really like the fact that he chose history's crappiest fake god to worship - a snake god that was eventually exposed as a glove puppet!

I didn't realize Alan Moore was that crazy!

Tell us more about this glove puppet hoax.

I only vaguely remember: Alan has talked about it at length in some interviews. I have a notion it was a Roman demigod/prophet-snake, that was eventually revealed to be a high class glove puppet. Alan's point is something to do with it not mattering what you worship, that it's something to do with the acts and rituals of worship that matters. Don't ask me to make sense of it.

All hail the chickenbear!

I remember an interview where he said he saw a demon that looked like a huge pile of diamonds. He goes, 'Of course, it looked nothing like a demon, but I knew what it was anyway.'

i love the automatic assumption that anything metaphysical is instantly "rubbish".
