Lyrics to England World Cup Songs

I'm going to have a look myself now, but can anyone remember/find any of the words to England's 1986 and 1994 efforts ('We've got the Whole World at our Feet' with Stock Aitken and Waterman in '86 and 'On Top of the World' with Echo and the Bunneymen and the Spice Girls in '98).

N., Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Come on, you know you want to.

N., Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No, you don't, do you? I have 'On Top of the World' OK but the SAW effort eludes me.

N., Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I know some of the words myself, but I'm sure you can find them in nanoseconds, whatever those are. Why don't you post them to this thread? 86 would probably prove unusually poignant for me.

the pinefox, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I could post the 98 ones (just spotted typo in first sentence) if you really want but as I say the 86 ones elude me. It was a double A-side with 'unbearably poignant' When we are far from home and it reached the exalted position of No.66 in the hit parade.

N., Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

We've got the whole world at our feet/There ain't a single team that we can't beat/They'll all be dancing in the street/'Cos we've got the whole world at our feet.

English pigs. It's hardly 'Say it With Pride' featuring Marillion now is it?

Jonnie, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

or Don't come home too soon ha ha ha

Jock fools, resorting to begging through the power of song.

chris, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm still traumatised from World In Motion, ban this sick stunt.

Nicole, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I was interviewed by LBC about this issue this morning. They wanted to know how important supporters felt the whole song issue was. The simple answer it seems to me is 'not bloody much'.

I say bring back the team singing the song. It will usually be rubbish, and so the best thing to hope for is to see the players on Top of the Pops looking awkward and casting sideways glances at each other that say 'what are we doing here?'

On a related note, I got my Panini sticker album today. Anyone else doing it and got swops?

Nathan Barley, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Not sure if I'll be able to finish a stickerbook in three weeks, but if I was doing one it would definitely be Panini, anything else would just be wrong.

chris, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Absolutely. The shop I went in had the Merlin and Panini versions. I mean, puhlease. What kind of idiot did he think I was? It has to be Panini.

Nathan Barley, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That's great Jonnie. How sure are you of those lyrics? It sounds like you've just made them up.

N., Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Knowing Jonnie like I do I'd say they were probably right

chris, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh, 'Don't Come Home Too Soon' was fantastic. Thanks for reminding me.

Ally C, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I agree with 96 on that - I think that track was OK, actually.

Obvious absentee from thread = Steady Mike, who has encyclopedic knowledge of a) these things, b) their hilarious comic possibilities, c) most other things too.

the pinefox, Friday, 26 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I heard a snippet of the new fat les world cup song and it won't surprise you to hear that it was cocking shite.

Jonnie, Friday, 26 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

what about the Venables effort?

MarkH, Friday, 26 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I've not heard our one yet. The 1990 one with the "put em under presah'" Jack Charlton sample was good. Can we get Decal to do this one? Presumably it's done already, anyone heard it?

Ronan, Friday, 26 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I was thinking the other day we should have an ILE fantasy world cup thingy, has anyone found a decent (ie free and not overly complicated) on-line one?

CarsmileSteve, Saturday, 27 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Pinefox:

a) not really
b) you should know by now that I save all my best joax for e-mails to you; around here I like to play the role of a dour trainspotter, prone to drooling reverie of the unbearably poignant variety. Except when I post as 'Dave Q'.
c) see a).

[My preliminary research has, however, unearthed a SAW-England collaboration for Euro88 (as it almost certainly wasn't called at the time). Waterman's ego was unmappably vast at that point, and I doubt very much whether Captain Marvel and his underachievers were even allowed in the studio. Squad voices sculpted from off-mic Astley coughing fits and a Princess out-take. All proceeds went to re-buff the rear three rows of seats in MCFC's Kippax Road stand. You have to say that's munificent.]

I've been messing around with Excel, saucy man that I am and have dun a spreadsheet for the World Cup. It's a macro free predictor and result recorder. I think it's rather snazzy, if I do say so myself.

Feel free to download and pass onto friends and enemies alike. Enjoy.

Nathan Barley, Saturday, 27 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Excel I can do. HTML not so, it seems.

Nathan Barley, Saturday, 27 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mr Boyle - this looks smashing, but is there a way to open it in MS Works Spreadsheet? It's telling me that it's password-protected or encrypted, but I really suspect that I just can't read Excel 97 files.

Michael Jones, Saturday, 27 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

one month passes...
Does anyone remember the 1982 song "This Time", any idea who it was with ?

Damon, Monday, 27 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

'This Time (We'll Get It Right)' b/w 'We'll Fly The Flag', England World Cup Squad. Written by Chris Norman and Peter Spencer.

N., Monday, 27 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"we're on our way/we are ron's 22/hear the roar/of the red white and blue/this time/more than any other time/this time/we're gonna find a way/find a way to get away/this time/we'll get it right."

They didn't.

Jonnie, Monday, 27 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

To be fair, they said they were going to find a way to 'get away', not do any good at the World Cup.

N., Monday, 27 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My goodness! There is somebody in this world as sad as me! I too have created a lovely World Cup Predictor spreadsheet. Mine relies fairly heavily on the odds on each team provided by the Herald on Saturday as well as my own predictions, which may be as fanciful as I make them (England winning their group being one, obviously).

Madchen, Monday, 27 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Was that Chris Norman from Smokie? Bloody hell (and also they were massive in GERMANY pah). Actually I do find "This Time (We'll Get It Right)" interesting on its own level - a sort of final statement of the old military, formal idea of England (check that marching band rhythm, utterly unthinkable today). The eight years between it and "World In Motion" were revolutionary in all senses.

Robin Carmody, Monday, 27 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Anyone know where I can download Fat Les' new effort entitled "Who Invented Fish and Chips?"??? My tip for the No 1 England song of the summer??? The England Boys - Go England SUPERB!!!!

Loyal Englishman, Tuesday, 4 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 4 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Andrew Skene, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

three years pass...
Because I hate myself and enjoy inflicting pain on my hangover-addled soul, I am watching "top ten footie anthems" on TV just now. The Anfield Rap was marvellous, wasn't it?

However, my attention was drawn to two appalling songs, one a remake of "From Paris to Berlin" called "From London to Berlin" (sample lyrics, "we're going to marvel at Roon and all the things he can do, we're going to win the World Cup"), and an England-friendly remake of "Is This The Way to Amarillo" which had me hurling toast and coffee at my telly in apoplectic rage.

They're now playing Collapsed Lung "Eat my goal" which is a welcome relief after the horror of that appalling Embrace thing.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 4 June 2006 09:39 (twenty years ago)

Boyler OTM about bringing back the team singing the song. Also none of this schmindie bollocks, proper chantalong songs are what the World Cup is all about.

(currently watching Clayton Blackmore and Lee Sharpe looking embarrassed in attractive woolly jumpers singing along to Status Quo - this is what proper football songs are about. Embrace can just fcuk off)

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 4 June 2006 09:54 (twenty years ago)

currently watching Clayton Blackmore and Lee Sharpe looking embarrassed in attractive woolly jumpers singing along to Status Quo

i think getting rose-tinted nostalgia about this is probably going rather too far.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Sunday, 4 June 2006 12:57 (twenty years ago)

Nah, I love stupid football songs sung by footballers who look totally wrong whilst doing it. Best example seen today = Alan Hansen shuffling embarrassedly in the background of the Anfield Rap video while all his team-mates and even Kenny Dalglish seem to be getting right into it (yet all looking totally foolish in the process).

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 4 June 2006 13:13 (twenty years ago)

(I am not exactly nostalgic for anything to do with Man Utd or England - just for cheesy football songs. Further example of this mentalism: I still know all the words to Hot Shot Tottenham off by heart, despite not caring one way or the other about the team)

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 4 June 2006 13:16 (twenty years ago)

The Chas & Dave - Spurs combo rules in the world of football songs. I've never understood the love for the whole New Order / John Barnes thing. The Anfield Rap, despite being for the team I hated with every fibre of my being, wins some kind of prize for having the most quotable lines. All Man Utd songs from my lifetime are terrible, but the 50s Callypso one is good (well, shit really, but amusing). The best England World Cup song has to be "this time, more than any other time, this time, we're gonna find a way..."

Teh HoBBercraft (the pirate king), Sunday, 4 June 2006 20:48 (twenty years ago)

The Anfield Rap wins everything going just for the "if anyone can, Macca can...macca can...macca can" pisstake. And for Celtic's worst-ever manager getting "Barnes" to rhyme with "bananas".

(how can you not like "come on you reds", as mentioned above with lovely Clayton Blackmore and his lovely woolly jumper?)

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 4 June 2006 20:51 (twenty years ago)

Best England song is so Three Lions it's not even funny. Scotland's are all great*, except for Ole Ola by Rod Stewart which was a bit pish.

*yes, including Don't Come Home Too Soon, which also has the best video, featuring Colin Hendry and Christian Dailly dribbling through Prestwick Airport in an attempt to look like Ronaldo & co in that year's Nike ad.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 4 June 2006 20:53 (twenty years ago)

(how can you not like "come on you reds", as mentioned above with lovely Clayton Blackmore and his lovely woolly jumper?)

It makes me smile, but let's face it: Status Quo are no Chas & Dave.

Teh HoBBercraft (the pirate king), Sunday, 4 June 2006 21:22 (twenty years ago)

Hurry up England, come on. We're gonna win the cup, nuh nuh nuh nuh.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Monday, 5 June 2006 07:48 (twenty years ago)

Stan Boardman?

No doubt full of "jerrrr man" references...
