retail therapy

Due to ATP hangover and various other things I feel quite down at the moment so I'm going to resort to the tried and trustworthy method of spending money (that I really shouldn't) on stuff (cds, a cd player, maybe some trainers). What do you do to get you out of that funk?

chris, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

so, nothing then?

chris, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What funk?!?!?! Buying records is ace!

Alex in SF, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

exactly my point, I am going to buy things from Brazil I think, and maybe some Sigur ros, you know, to cheer me up like.

chris, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I revel in the funk.

N., Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The 'Favela Chic' compilation is nice: French-Brazilian and very up- cheering!

Archel, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I was thinking os mutantes but I will look at that one too, and probably buy it.

chris, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Does buying things really make one happy though? The whole idea of retail therapy and compulsive cosumption is obviously one of the cornerstones of Western capitalism. What is it that is theraputic here, the thrill of spending the money, the acquisition of new stuff, the enjoyment of the new stuff until it becomes stale, old stuff which one can no longer wring any value out of.

Instead look inwards, work out why you are in such a funk and do something positive about it.

Pete, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yes. And if you don't like what you see there, get the funk out.

N., Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The only retail therapy I ever indulged in was after fury at idiot dole man, and I went into Poundland and bought some pliers and a cap gun.

emil.y, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It seems to work for me, it's the thrill of getting something new home, unwrapping it, playing with it etc.

I do need a cd player though, mine's been busted for ages, and a boy can't have enough pairs of trainers.

The funk has been examined though.

chris, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

!!!! Should I get this Buffy Been There, Killed That tshirt????

Sarah, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I totally need a decent playah and speakers as well. And I could do with some more trainers. TK Maxx for me!!

Sarah, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dearie me, if we all sat round trying to figure out why we are in funks nobody would ever get anything done. The second I get paid i.e. tomorrow I am going to buy MILLIONS of clothes (but not peasant chic as it seems peasant chicks are flat chested from all that manual labouring in fields & suchlike.)

Emma, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh great and now Lily the Pink is stuck in my head. What!?

Sarah, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

if brazil then i recommend marcos valle ~ the best of vol 2 (ive never heard vol1, but 2 is fab)

i'm afraid my retail therapy at the moment is limited to beer and chocolate (although not at the same time)

gareth, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

right, off round the corner to the bright shopping lights of oxford street and Richer sounds.

chris, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What is the point of peasant chic if not to show off decolletage? Fashion has lost its way.

Tom, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Emily, i can see how the cap gun would be good for revenge, but pliers? The poor, poor bastard...

Chris, can you by me a CD writer for my PC, then bring it over and install it for me? Oh, and 20 CDs while you're at it. Ta!

Mark C, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Come now Tom if you are spending the day bending over picking potatoes you don't want your tits hanging out all over the place now do you? Basically peasant chic seems to = lots of gathering and ruching in the general bust region which looks terrifying on anything above a B cup.

Emma, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My student loan arrived last week and this term is really short so I don't have to spend it boring stuff like rent and eating, so erm, yeah. One of my purchases arrived today, so I would like to announce that.

21ST CENTURY GIRLS FUCKING ROCK

Rock harder than mark s yes they do.

Graham, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Its obvious why peasants are all flat chested.

Peasant wiv bust=whore.

Pete, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sarah: No.

Graham, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Aw. I am getting excited about decorating new HOUSE in a BUFFY STYLE apart from her decor is a tad rub hmmmmmmm, I supose I could try and make it like Willows stupidly sized room but I would nead loadsa old majick books and a bovine looking Wiccan pet gurlfriend.

Sarah, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I wuv Tara, I decided.

Graham, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Moo moo moo!

Ta-RAH, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

But she's so dim! I only started liking her after Glory fuxored her head and that was only cos she was dead amusing as a nuttah.

RickyT, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

She's fabulous in the birthday episode, though as I've said before she has very odd shaped breasts.

Graham, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hehhe I haf been reading the Buffy Cross and Stake boardZoR where they reveal GRATE Tara news (wot I will not sa here in case of Mark S no spoilers ph34r)

Sarah, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I wuv Tara too! Don't pick on a poor defenceless animal!

Mark C, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tara TV has gone into liquidation.

N., Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

For Marcos Valle I'd recommend Nova Bossa Nova which was re-released on Far out a few years back (Mr Bongo or Sounds of the universe will have it). His later stuff I don't find as good but this I think is the best record he made.

Also in the Brazilian vein Joyce - Hard Bossa is very good also on Far Out.

Ed, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Emma I just want to note that you are dead wrong on this thread.

Bitsuh, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

the peasant shirts look terrible on anything below a b cup though. and i can't afford retail therapy.

Maria, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah, those peasant shirts are designed for maximum bustiage.

Dan Perry, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ahhh, the peasant look, we have that in dunedin, the hippies here have been doing that for years. very very very very very dud.

di, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Perhaps we have differing definitions of peasant chic. But really smocking in the bust area looks atrocious on the more endowed woman.

Emma, Friday, 26 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Going out is the best form of therapy. I have to choose between it and buying stuff and it always wins. Maybe you've nothing to show for it but nonetheless. Of course if you don't feel like going out then CDs must be bought. I am crying out for something new to listen to.

Ronan, Friday, 26 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Wow, I'd almost forgotten that handy and potent 3-word anti-Emma argument: ST PAULI GIRL.

Bitsuh, Friday, 26 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm a DD cup, and peasant blouses look great on me. I love them. (I also weigh 180 pounds, so stop drooling.)

On the main point of the thread: Spending money doesn't cheer me up, it depresses me. Even when it's something that I've wanted for a while.

Christine "Green Leafy Dragon" Indigo, Friday, 26 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Eh? What's wrong with 180 lbs.?

Ned Raggett, Friday, 26 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

the other day i bought a tremolo pedal. today, hungover, i bought some rekkids.

di, Friday, 26 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ned: Nothing, if I were male or six feet tall. I've been told that I look like I'm only 150 pounds, though.
