And I say this having grown up near the beach most of my life in Coronado and currently living just a couple of miles from it here in OC, though I don't swim myself. It's the atmosphere I appreciate, also the sense of there being an 'edge' -- I couldn't live anywhere but near the coasts now, I don't like the idea of land just stretching out and stretching off in all directions.
Whenever I visit home up in Carmel, I always walk down to the beach at least a couple of times if not more. There's something just right about it, whether if it's a grey morning or a beautiful sunset.

Radiohead? Diamondhead?
On a related note, I was just invited to a friend's day-after-wedding party, and it's maybe 40 minutes away... ON A BEACH. I'm less than psyched. Plus, I don't drive, so I'll have to catch a ride with someone and be stuck there likely ALL DAY AND NIGHT. Being cold, wet, and sandy is so dud I'm already in a bad mood.

Though there are far less comfortable beach walking days in Seattle, going over to Alki in West Seattle on a temperature sunny/partly cloudy day in the spring easily beats all. Direct view of all of downtown Seattle and the Space Needle, view of the snowy Olympic Mountains, maybe a view of distant Mt. Baker, just swimming distance from the Puget Sound islands, and very tiny beaches with clear shallow waters with little mini waves -- all around people who wouldn't know how to act or dress like obnoxious surfers or beach people, even if they tried -- and after it all, maybe a nice direct panoramic of Mt. Rainier on the way back over the West Seattle...all things that finally cured me of getting over being back from a month long road trip.
