"Graphic novel" is a posh word that only the rockists and the elitists of the comic world use.

Neil Gaiman told a funny story on this subject somewhere... Apparently he was attending a party and chatting with some woman he didn't know. The woman asked what he did for living, and he said he was writer. She then asked what sort of stuff he wrote, and he said "comic books". He could see from the woman's reaction that she didn't think much of comic book writers. The woman then asked what comics he had written, and he mentioned The Sandman. Immediately the woman's attitude changed to much more positive, and she was like, "Oh, you're Neil Gaiman! You don't write comic books, you write graphic novels!". Gaiman ended the story by saying that it was kinda like him telling someone that he was a whore by profession, and that someone replying, "Oh, you're not a whore, you're a lady of the night!!".

I went to Boston for Thanksgiving and had a grand ol' time! The picture is from Boston Graveyard, where grand ol' Paul Revere is buried, among other notables. One of the headstones said "Died January 2, 1691/2".

Lady Gorgorrand (ENBB), Saturday, 29 November 2008 02:58 (sixteen years ago)

That's correct!

That was my first time in Boston and I really did have a great time. I enjoyed playing ambient music at the MIT subway stop, especially.

Z S, Saturday, 29 November 2008 03:03 (sixteen years ago)

Tell us more!

roxymuzak, Saturday, 29 November 2008 03:10 (sixteen years ago)

We walked around the river for a while, and ended up by a hotel where there were sculptures that looked like giant blank laptops. I doubt they were supposed to look like computers, but they were titanium colored and had the exact shape and angle. So we tried to run up them. Then everyone had to pee, so we went into the adjacent hotel where everyone was rich and a little kid in a magnificent suit was holding forth to an uninterested uncle on the topic of ancient mapmaking. No joke.

Later, we tried to go up to the top of the Prudential building to have a drink on Thanksgiving ("Top of the Hub", I think?) but it was booked. So instead we had an excellent gigantic dinner in Chinatown.

Z S, Saturday, 29 November 2008 03:19 (sixteen years ago)

I meant about the ambient music!

roxymuzak, Saturday, 29 November 2008 03:36 (sixteen years ago)

Oh, d'oh. There was at the Kendall subway stop, by the MIT campus, where there were levers you could pull on the walls that would let you play chimes in the median between the two subway platforms. There were three different musical stations, but the middle one was broken. This one was the most fun:

http://farm1.static.flickr.com/166/405050710_8eaeb36e63.jpg?v=0
http://cache.boston.com/bonzai-fba/Globe_Photo/2007/06/18/1182161385_8207.jpg

The hanging cylinders are chimes, the hammers inbetween sway back and forth and are controlled by a heavy bar that you shift up and down from the platform. The sound they make is absolutely beautiful. It was fun to get the chimes going as a train left the station, playing as loudly as possible, and then about 30 seconds later, as the noise of the train leaving finally dissipated, the chimes would slowly become audible. The chimes are divided into two sections - one platform controls one, the other controls the second. So I was actually only playing half of the chimes. I really wanted the old man reading the newspaper on the other side to join my new subway ambient project, but I guess he was more interested in the news.

Here's an article I just found about it:

http://www.boston.com/news/local/articles/2007/06/18/this_matisse_seeks_a_patron/?p1=MEWell_Pos3

Apparently the grandson of Matisse installed it!

Z S, Saturday, 29 November 2008 04:20 (sixteen years ago)

Bad things about Boston: weather, endemic racism, nu-Red Sox fans. Great things about Boston: public transport, music scene/radio, energy, public works projects, parks, Dunkin Donuts, tendency of everyone to call women "deah" even when one doesn't know them. Lived in the area for 7 years, saw most of the city and the burbs.

Typical Boston story: morning commute on the Red Line, train is packed, huge knot of African American kids get on. One of them comes up behind long-haired Euro-American dude who is rocking a Walkman and massive headphones and says, just low enough for his friends to hear but not loud enough for the dude himself to hear, "Yo, man, turn off that Aerosmith! Stop listenin' to Aerosmith!" Whole train cracked up because he probably WAS listening to Aerosmith and everyone knew it.
