In the book which accompanied the tv series "Arthur C. Clarke's Mysterious World" Clarke mentions the time his mother said that there were some four-horned sheep at a farm not far from their house. The young Arthur guffawed at this but later discovered that it was true.

Have you ever seen any animals which you wouldn't have believed existed?

my personal example = BLUE LIZARDS. If somebody had suggested that blue lizards existed I would have laughed, until this time last years when I saw loads of them basking on the rocks around Petra in Jordan. They were really bright blue as well.

there was a zoo, about 400 kilometres west of where I grew up, in a town called Roma, and its main attraction was a five legged cow. I saw that cow when I was three years old, and by god I felt special.

Zebra's. Stripey horses that are too lazy to be ridden. I just thought they put it in my Animal ABC book to cover the letter Z.

(Of course I later found out the Xefro - a cute bear like creature with very lomng arms like Mr Tickle did not exist).

Thanks to Pete for taking time out from his fruit & veg stall to bring us his poorly-apostrophed words of wisdom.

Black squirrels in Canada. As a lad growing up in Dorset I thought squirrels were only grey and , only on Brownsea Island!, red. Everything I thought I knew about squirrels turns out to be wrong.

I have heard they have them in Italy too Jonnie - when I went to Tuscany with my parents aged about 15 the brochure said 'you may catch a glimpse of the rare black squirrel', obviously as keen nature fans we spent the entire holiday looking out for it rather than scoffing all the lovely icecream & pizza & wine.

Apple's - 6d a lb's.

Then again, those black squirrels could just turn out to be escaped rats from the Underground whose tails have flourished in the sunshine.

You can say that again. Earlier this week I noticed a squirrel on a railing outside my bathroom window. It was just sitting there facing away from the window, making these almost cat-like cries. There didn't appear to be any other squirrels, or even any other animals, in the area. It did this several times, and I got the impression it had been doing it for a while. Then it just kind of slowly walked away, very un-squirrel-like. What is going on here?

can you do that special twisty thing with your brown paper bags, Pete?

MarkH, Friday, 26 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Its all in the wrist. Fold the corner of the bag and then - whoop - right over.
