Obama Hipster Victory Dance

Expect to see this on the Gothamist frontpage tomorrow. I got off the L train and walked onto bedford ave, and people were pouring out into the street... people who make up our 20-something generation's zeitgeist. our 'thing' that our kids will look back on and think, "stuff was sure weird 20 years ago." so who are we? skinny jeans and soft wool sweaters and big scarves, and that nice boy Aelx P. Keaton haircut, and fitted military jackets and boots. what the hell are we? the fey, precious, gentle generation? what the hell is that? this is our urban New York City "thing"? Myt parents were all punk ruK CBGB 1970s, and here I am wearing a nice sweater with a good boy haircut and skinny jeans like we wore as kids in the 80s and early 90s. what generation was ever 'gentle and precious' as it's thing? we're so stupid. such a pampered, tooty frooty "thing". the last one had like, sarcastic teenagers. we have michael cera. grrrrrrrr

anyway these are the people ... the red state partisons think of as New Yorkers and hate us. and out into the streets these fey little things in their skinny jeans and big soft heavy wool jackets, lighting off fireworks, celebrating like this is the new day in a life ... and it's strange to think that this is The Moment of these people. the air that we breathe in is the air of this and these peoples' moment. is this ... our moment? are you with me breother?

>and here I am wearing a nice sweater with a good boy haircut and skinny jeans

you know, no one is forcing you to do all that: wear a sweater in november (MY GOD something NO other generation did!!!). you can move to san diego and wear board shorts and forget williamsburg still be a part of "this generation," you know -which you hilariously keep defining in largely sartorial-only terms with a minute geographical circumference

I actually cried tears of LOL.

It's the little bump-the-latte-glasses toast that makes it.

post-apocalyptic time jazz (Masonic Boom), Wednesday, 5 November 2008 14:45 (seventeen years ago)

things got very very ugly, the police got outrageously aggressive, beating people up, needlessly, in what was a beautiful night. very sad.

Posted by: mary | November 5, 2008 04:59 AM

Ummm... You didn't stay long enough. Eventually the riot police showed up and started hitting people with batons and arresting anyone who stepped off the sidewalk. It was the most disgusting abuse of NYPD power I've ever witnessed.

And that was their reaction to a celebration.

I actually spoke to several of the officers who expressed their disdain for President Elect Obama, and it was clear they didn't consider it a celebration. Once the nice cops in uniforms left and the riot police showed up - they treated the voters who were celebrating like they were criminals.

this joke is making the rounds:

Saint Peter's standing at the Pearly Gates (as he's generally wont to do unless he's cut short and needs to nip off to the celestial bog), and he's staring at the top of the escalator that leads to the gates, when a figure appears out of the mist and clouds.

"I AM SAINT PETER," boomed Saint Peter, whose once-famously loud voice was never really documented in that one book about Jesus, "Who goes there?"

"I am Barack Obama - first black president of the United States Of America" says the man.

"A black president in America?" says Peter, "Well I'll be! When were you elected?"

FWIW this is pretty much the only place I hang out 'at' where there hasn't been a prevalent meme of "lol who's taking bets on the date of his assassination" so, er, good going I guess!

The Slash My Father Wrote (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 5 November 2008 15:14 (seventeen years ago)

Burt Stanton needs his own program called "Reports From The Field with Burt Stanton" where he can ponder things like this and no one will have to watch.

This is seriously like the first thing you thought of when Obama won?

also last night was weirdly a bunch of "Ras-Trent"-esque hippie dudes banging on tambourines and chanting lame psuedo-political police-baiting crap. it's not like it was a bunch of model types huddled around a turntable listening to fleet foxes and smoking cigarettes

surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally, Wednesday, 5 November 2008 16:26 (seventeen years ago)

My expert analysis of all this is that burt_stanton does not have much luck with hipster babes.

Local Garda, Wednesday, 5 November 2008 16:32 (seventeen years ago)

you guys don't get it, he is making oblique commentary about hipsters pulling the wool over their own eyes. the soft, colorful wool of their nice sweaters. wool clothing is for hipsters now, you see, and anyone who wears a sweater is a hipster. QED.
