...at least, in Britain, according to OUT! magazine. 60% of British women think its okay to be gay, compared to 42% of British men. Do you think this is an accurate representation, Brits? If so, do you have any ideas as to why this might be the case?

In America (and perhaps Britain) men are very insecure about their sexuality-I've got to be macho-especially in the bible belt. I've noticed men are usually the one's who'll blurt out stereotypical insults disguised as facts in discussions.

Women are insecure about their sexuality too but society doesn't penalize them quite the same-unless they are a dirty dirty whore.

Society says men are allowed to stick their dick anywhere they'd like while women are allowed to "explore" with other women.

Did all that make me sound bitter?

Don't apologize for sounding bitter, Lindsay, I think it's all pretty true here in the States, or can be. Individual reactions always provide a better picture than the 'norm,' but I suspect my circle of rather more aware friends don't really provide a real picture of where I live -- this is Orange County, after all. :-/

I imagine sexuality in the States is starting to diverge really harshly along class lines. While the increasingly (in worth, crucially NOT numbers) well-off are getting more 'tolerant'/'decadent' depending on where you stand, an entire underclass is gaining its conception of sexual relations from incarceration, where anything with a hole is a potential bitch and a bitch is nothing but a potential hole. I really think that all the chatter on the top of society re changing sex roles etc. is a bit pointless when an entire underclass is moving into Taliban-style regimentation thanks to widening social inequalities.

by 'worth' I mean purely 'monetary wealth' of course

dave q, Sunday, 28 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sorry I used the phrase 'entire underclass' twice, it's early and kybds don't like me much in the morning

Lindsey is OTM re the macho thing. I've known men who will normally say that being gay is disgusting and all that - and ended up in bed with them. It may also be relevant that women are generally more sensitive to people's feelings than men, of course. In the world of 'swinging', the majority of women are openly (in that context) bisexual, but very few men are - but, privately, it's by no means rare. Even in that environment, the same phenomenon exists, probably even more starkly.

I scored 50%, and I'm proud.

Ah, just seen the dedicated thread. Excuse me.

Martin: My husband and I are persona non grata in the local swinger scene simply because he's bisexual. Oh, well--I'd rather have several commited relationships (all at the same time), myself, than finding someone new each night to play with.

Christine: in my experience, you have to kind of separate things out. The man (me or your husband) lets it be assumed he is straight in some circumstances, but makes the point that he isn't in others. I found that I needed to play silly games like this when my wife and I were into that stuff.

I always find women who disapprove of male homosexuality a bit creepy. That's 40% of the population? Blimey.
