list taken from wiki ("list of vodkas") with somewhat arbitrary omissions to pare to 50 to make poll. Kept all US and UK and ones I've heard of.

If grey goos, ciroc or skyy wins I will come round your houses and trample your flowerbeds.

yes I'm wondering how many votes Grey Douche will get.

btw can Ketel One print ads be any more retarded?

wait, are we voting on how they taste or how they're marketed?

I DIED, Wednesday, 12 November 2008 15:42 (seventeen years ago)

they are all pretty much shit, though

I rather like moskovskya as it is very dry but seriously are there many drinks worth drinking where gin is not better than clear colourless vodka.

moscow mule, salty dog, and ?????

I DIED, Wednesday, 12 November 2008 15:58 (seventeen years ago)

and bloody mary, I guess. But there are very few vodka drinks worth drinking.

I DIED, Wednesday, 12 November 2008 15:59 (seventeen years ago)

you guys know its stolichnaya

a country packed with ponies (sunny successor), Wednesday, 12 November 2008 16:00 (seventeen years ago)

it's not because there is moscovskya, same distillery but not as sweet.

Moscow Mule and Bloody Mary especially both better with gin, not sure of a salty dog.

Ed, Wednesday, 12 November 2008 16:01 (seventeen years ago)

as in I have never had one.

Ed, Wednesday, 12 November 2008 16:01 (seventeen years ago)

yeah gin replacing vodka in both those drinks is awesome. what's in a salty dog?

t_g, Wednesday, 12 November 2008 16:03 (seventeen years ago)

grapefruit juice

lauren, Wednesday, 12 November 2008 16:03 (seventeen years ago)

Holy crap I've never had a gin Bloody Mary but it would work wouldn't it. Must try this.

salty dog is my #1 vodka drink

I DIED, Wednesday, 12 November 2008 16:05 (seventeen years ago)

without the salt it's a greyhound, also delicious

im confused by these 007 ads that are saying vodka is james bond's drink of choice. is he drinking vodka straight now or did he move from real martinis to vodka martinis?

a country packed with ponies (sunny successor), Wednesday, 12 November 2008 16:05 (seventeen years ago)

think james has always been a vodka martini guy hasnt he? also likes to shake it rather than stir which is not right at all

t_g, Wednesday, 12 November 2008 16:06 (seventeen years ago)

and surely gin would work well in a salty dog? gin + grapefruit juice are a good combo

t_g, Wednesday, 12 November 2008 16:06 (seventeen years ago)

I guess zubrowka is out as it is flavoured not straight but where is wybrowka?

I can't comment on the salty dog, but how could that not work with gin. One of my favourite summertime drinks is Oude Genever (Dutch aged gin) and grapefruit juice.

Ed, Wednesday, 12 November 2008 16:08 (seventeen years ago)

What, no Glens?

AndyTheScot, Wednesday, 12 November 2008 16:10 (seventeen years ago)

bah no zubrowka! obv stoli then

lex pretend, Wednesday, 12 November 2008 16:11 (seventeen years ago)

i've been buying Svedka. it's $20 for the heug bottle and it's not bad at all.

carne asada, Wednesday, 12 November 2008 16:12 (seventeen years ago)

zubrowka + apple juice = perennial standby

it always saddens me when i notice the prevalence of smirnoff in this country

lex pretend, Wednesday, 12 November 2008 16:12 (seventeen years ago)

dont understand how anyone can tell the difference w/ like 90% of these

otm. infusions and whatnot aside, it seems to me most of the "taste" attributes of vodka are negative (i.e. if you can taste something in it, it's not made very well). all of the major brands are good enough for what limited use i need from them (mix with grapefruit juice or in a bloody mary or whatever), and none of the expensive ones are worth the cost.

Sugar hiccup, Makes a pig soar and swoon (Pillbox), Wednesday, 12 November 2008 16:18 (seventeen years ago)

typsy mothra, basically OTM.

I do like pepper vodka, chilled and served with Russian dinner, though, but 90% of my vodka consumption is Screwdrivers, Bloody Marys (strained up), and Bloody Bulls.

I drink vodka on the rocks all the time. It's hard to explain the appeal... I actually do find it refershing, which is not something I can say about beer (though I like beer) or many other alc bevs.

Something I was involved in last year was part sponsored by Brecon Vodka, which is Welsh and thus sort of local to me, so there was a shitload of free vodka which to my pleasant surprise I could drink neat and actually enjoy it. Doubt many shops carry it outside Wales though

The Slash My Father Wrote (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 12 November 2008 16:29 (seventeen years ago)

if it comes in a plastic handle i will drink it

Uncle Shavedlongcock (max), Wednesday, 12 November 2008 16:31 (seventeen years ago)

From the ones I've had on the list, Stoli or Moskovskaya. But the only vodka I could actually work up brand loyalty to would be Zubrowka/Grasovka (are these the same? not sure if the latter is just the name it's sold under in Germany, but I've seen imported bottles of it here too - sadly not at German prices).

To be honest I can only taste small improvements with the increase in £££ anyway, which means that the vodka purists of this thread will hate me, as I will happily buy Smirnoff (or cheaper, if I've heard of it) for mixing far more often than I'll buy something nicer to drink neat.

Yeah the biggest bottle there really carries that "dunno, bought it at a car boot sale" feel with it

There are plenty of instances in the books and the films where Bond drinks vodka straight.

heard Bond wises up in the new one and goes for a sazerac.

Plus it's very very very hard for a bartender to fuck up as well.

Originally gin, and now vodka (and occasionally tequila!), gimlets have been my drink for almost 10 years for this exact reason. Sort of out of place in February, though.

Fred Dalton Township (Laurel), Wednesday, 12 November 2008 18:47 (seventeen years ago)

And after about three of them, the lime starts fucking up my throat. But otherwise A++++ would be hungover again.

Fred Dalton Township (Laurel), Wednesday, 12 November 2008 18:48 (seventeen years ago)

Lauren has plied me with grass vodka and fancy-pants apple juice and I would probably follow that cocktail anywhere. Lead on!

Fred Dalton Township (Laurel), Wednesday, 12 November 2008 18:49 (seventeen years ago)

real lime juice tho, rose's lime juice is way too sickly sweet and a lot of places still use that

velko, Wednesday, 12 November 2008 18:49 (seventeen years ago)

Okay why no mention of the Dan Akroyd supernatural vodka filtered through diamonds and bottle in a cosmic Mayan prophecy legend of the occult?

Abbott of the Trapezoid Monks (Abbott), Wednesday, 12 November 2008 20:13 (seventeen years ago)

It costs the same, or less, than your average top-shelf vodka (ie Ketel One).

Abbott of the Trapezoid Monks (Abbott), Wednesday, 12 November 2008 20:14 (seventeen years ago)

Roses's IS too sweet, but unless the booze is top-shelf the sugar goes a long way in softening the taste.

It also goes a long way towards a sugar crash, but that's another discussion.

Fred Dalton Township (Laurel), Wednesday, 12 November 2008 20:15 (seventeen years ago)

I wish I could get the vodka made in Idaho from good, honest Idaho potatoes, but I no longer live in Idaho.

Abbott of the Trapezoid Monks (Abbott), Wednesday, 12 November 2008 20:16 (seventeen years ago)

Rose's is bad news bears.

Go to the Mexican grocery & get like a half-gallon of real lime juice for half the price.

Abbott of the Trapezoid Monks (Abbott), Wednesday, 12 November 2008 20:16 (seventeen years ago)

Hah! I'd just squeeze actual limes at home, but I'm not carrying a bottle of juice to the bar with me.

Fred Dalton Township (Laurel), Wednesday, 12 November 2008 20:21 (seventeen years ago)

cutting the gimlet with a little sweetness is a-ok with me tho i love limes, but rose's is too too much

velko, Wednesday, 12 November 2008 20:43 (seventeen years ago)

i'd like to know more about vodka. the best one pound for pound is Danoff, a Latvian vodka you can buy at Waitrose for only about £12 but is super smooth.
