Uncle Shavedlongcock (max), Thursday, 13 November 2008 20:21 (seventeen years ago)

I've actually only read one of 'em.

The Sun Also Rises is possibly my favorite novel.

BIG HOOS' macaroni is off the motherfucking chain (BIG HOOS aka the steendriver), Thursday, 13 November 2008 20:29 (seventeen years ago)

Voting for the Orwell, for a billion reasons, including general feelings about the two authors...

nabisco, Thursday, 13 November 2008 20:31 (seventeen years ago)

"I've actually only read one of 'em."

As proven by a trip to wikipedia. Turns out I must've meant "For Whom the Bell Tolls"

Dork.

i voted for orwell, but im weirdly protective toward hemingway for reasons that i dont really understand myself

Uncle Shavedlongcock (max), Thursday, 13 November 2008 20:43 (seventeen years ago)

i need to read more Orwell. The Sun Also Rises is just okay--I hate the corny ending

Mr. Que, Thursday, 13 November 2008 20:44 (seventeen years ago)

actually revise that--his sentences in that book are amazing, i have nothing against his sentences, really

Mr. Que, Thursday, 13 November 2008 20:44 (seventeen years ago)

This is a total knee-jerk / I'm-a-jerk reaction, but any time I hear praise of Hemingway's sentences, my head gets stuck in a loop that goes Hemingway - "sentences" - "sentences" - Hemingway - blah - Hemingway - blah blah - "sentences" - blah blah blah

nabisco, Thursday, 13 November 2008 20:59 (seventeen years ago)

you could also do the same thing with Ray Carver

Mr. Que, Thursday, 13 November 2008 21:05 (seventeen years ago)

and you don't sound jerky--i get what you mean. i think this book is the only book i really like that i've read by him (In Our Time and A Farewell to Arms are the other two, plus stories)

Mr. Que, Thursday, 13 November 2008 21:06 (seventeen years ago)

Eric Blair rules.

Aimless, Thursday, 13 November 2008 21:09 (seventeen years ago)

Wouldn't A Farewell to Arms be a more appropriate Hem novel for this comparison?

W i l l, Thursday, 13 November 2008 21:12 (seventeen years ago)

i love hemingway no apologies

sofa king (deej), Thursday, 13 November 2008 21:13 (seventeen years ago)

i cant read too much hemingway in a row, but he can be so good to read if you havent picked up anything by him in a while

some doobie brother (max), Thursday, 13 November 2008 21:13 (seventeen years ago)

except for the extremely problematic attitude towards women obv

sofa king (deej), Thursday, 13 November 2008 21:13 (seventeen years ago)

Definitely yeah, re: Carver! Actually with him I might say the sentence is an even narrower/worse prism for talking about the stuff than with Hemingway.

nabisco, Thursday, 13 November 2008 21:13 (seventeen years ago)

i should probably read homage to catalonia, huh

horseshoe, Thursday, 13 November 2008 21:14 (seventeen years ago)

i have a great deal of irrational dislike for orwell due to 'politics and the english language' which is a pretty dumb essay

some doobie brother (max), Thursday, 13 November 2008 21:17 (seventeen years ago)

in my world high schoolers would all read homage to catalonia instead of animal farm and pol and eng lang

some doobie brother (max), Thursday, 13 November 2008 21:19 (seventeen years ago)

i read no orwell in high school!

horseshoe, Thursday, 13 November 2008 21:21 (seventeen years ago)

Max is onto something there -- there's this incredible on-the-ground clarity to Homage that I'd bet could really, really turn young people on to wanting to understand both politics and history in better ways.

nabisco, Thursday, 13 November 2008 21:25 (seventeen years ago)

Homage to Catalonia is amazing, I never read any Hemingway.
