Hats: Classic or Dud?

Do you wear hats? What are your favourite kind? Are they the clothing equivalent of beards? Who are your favourite hat designers? Guys, does the thought of having to wear a top hat put you off a big church wedding ? Who is your favourite hat wearing personality? Are there any?...

jel, Sunday, 29 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I am not a big fan of hats butElvis Pompilio is my fave hat-designer.

nathalie (nathalie), Sunday, 29 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I feel I ought to rethink this, but DUD, provisionally:

Brass Eye really should have picked up on something I've always suspected: that young girls wearing gingham dresses and straw hats (as still compulsory in summer in some prep schools, I believe) *massively* arouses paedophiles (shit, it arouses *me* even).

On that evidence: quite dangerously dud.

Robin Carmody, Sunday, 29 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I wear straw Cowboy hats to keep me cool in the summer and a felt fedora to keep me hot in the winter. its alot more glam themn a toque.

anthony, Sunday, 29 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hats can be classic unless there's a whiff of "I'm wearing a hat" about the hat, in which case it's dud.

Best hat wearers: Mr Benn, David Bowie at Mark Bolan's funeral, Frank Sinatra, the Mr Men, Noddy Holder.

jamesmichaelward, Sunday, 29 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Baseball caps on anyone but baseball players=dud.

Baseball cap on William Hague=years of ridicule=classic.

Billy Dods, Sunday, 29 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Even more classic: any retired colonel's response to Hague wearing a baseball cap ...

Robin Carmody, Sunday, 29 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I love Phillip Treacy

anthony, Sunday, 29 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Toques being standard issue in this country and all, I'll have to say classic. Kill those eighties, John Taylor fedoras tho. They are a source of acute embarassment.

Kim, Sunday, 29 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have my grandfathers Fedora . It looks like something Sam Spade would wear. Defiantly not 80s.

anthony, Sunday, 29 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You live in Toronto. You are too poncey to understand real winter. What is this about you wearing Toques. Save it for the peopel who need them.

anthony, Sunday, 29 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

If I didn't wear hats all the time, my skin would be all leathery and I'd look a good 5-10 years older, because NO sunblock seems to work very well on my pale skin. So for me, they're classic. Plus I've finally found a decent opaque black bonnet that shields my entire face without making me look like a church lady.

Kerry Keane, Sunday, 29 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

even more dud is guys who have a selection of baseball caps with some only meant for special occasions.

keith, Sunday, 29 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hats matt down the pompadour and make you go bald sooner. PLus you can't wear them and headphones. Dud.

Mike Hanley, Sunday, 29 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Heh. Ok, it's true. We don't wear toques in Toronto. But that's just because we don't have to go outdoors to get places. Plus they have installed a giant patio heater at the top of the Big Tower so it's always sunny summertime at the centre of the universe...

Kim, Sunday, 29 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No hats fit me, so dud.

Melissa W, Sunday, 29 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Screw you all, I like baseball hats on occasion... but only backwards!!!

Yo yo yo!!!!

Dave M., Sunday, 29 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You all just smack of big-eared people who could never wear hats in elementary school without it making your ears stick out, hence becoming vicious bitter towards hats.

Me, I just don't care that the hats make my world-cup ears stick out. I won't wear them personally because I just hate having my hair ruined, but hats are fucking classic. I wish I had my leopard print cowboy hat.

Ally, Sunday, 29 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"world-cup ears "?

Mike Hanley, Sunday, 29 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mike, you don't want to know.

Ally, Sunday, 29 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

as in "victory ears"?

Mike Hanley, Sunday, 29 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Exactly. Like victory gardens

Ally, Monday, 30 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

hats can be classic. i have a collection of old fluffy kangols that i find in op-shops. my favourite one is a smutty red colour which matches a shade of lipstick i own. i am currently wearing a pink one.

i only wear my hats in the winter cos its too hot for them in the summer. hats are pretty necessary in the winter down this end of the world. i used to worry about hat-hair but i have realised that my hats make my hair sort of curl up at the ends and that looks good.

Ally, The World Cup has no handles. Hence you have no ears?

My favorite hats of all time were the baseball caps that I and a couple of friends burnt one night at a party about ten years ago. (They belonged to an ex-friend of a friend. I never found out why he wanted them burnt, but it was fun anyway.)

Christine "Green Leafy Dragon" Indigo, Friday, 26 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I hate hat hair.

N., Saturday, 27 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I lost my lovely lightweight wooly hat at atp, that saddens me.

Was Ptee serious about tomorrow's hat-contest, and if so would a pink Powerpuff stetson guarentee me victory?

Does anyone know where I can get a good quality (read won't crack in half if I touch it) straw cowboy hat?

Mon, Tuesday, 13 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes. Look over to your left. Do you see that red board? Right, then, walk past it then immediately turn left again. They're down at the end.

nabisco, Tuesday, 13 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the nice thing about being online is that when people say 'i'm a model and i'm going to be walking around naked in public soon', nobody can see you => nobody cares.

i have started wearing my hat out now. i think it was moderately succesful in leeds, and perhaps again in whitechapel. i think its playing for the team, some good work in midfield

I lost my black floppy felt hat on a bus whilst drunk.

Anna (Anna), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 12:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I wish more people would wear hats. They're not just meant for Kenny Chesney, you know...

Leon Federline (Ex Leon), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 12:24 (twenty-one years ago)

i can't get hats to fit my freakishly large head, i look like one of the mr men whenever i try one one. It's a pity cos i'd love a cloche hat.

leigh (leigh), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 12:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I look like Blossom when I wear a hat, but they always look nice on others.

Leon Federline (Ex Leon), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 12:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I have yet to encounter a hat that suits me.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 20:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Richard Thompson to thread

I wear thrift-store fedoras a fair amount. Mostly I get away with it. I used to sometimes wear a straw boater occasionally in the summer but now even I think that's too foptastic for words.

The Mad Puffin, Wednesday, 11 May 2005 20:09 (twenty-one years ago)

classic. i have more hats than I do shoes. or pants. all baseball caps.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I also have a large head and Blossom tendencies.

I think guys are cute in hats.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

i still wear fluffy kangols! only now i have a navy blue beret that i knitted and adore, its warmer than my other hats and has cable patterns on it. it even impressed the ladies at the knitting store!

di, Wednesday, 11 May 2005 21:34 (twenty-one years ago)

can one wear uncanny hats? can one weather hats? can one wear feather hats? concentrate on irate hats, radiate from hats. when sated, vacate hats.

di, Wednesday, 11 May 2005 21:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Guys who rock the Tom Waits wannabe look (ie tiny tiny fedora) whilst sporting tiny goatees and SHORTS WITH HIKING BOOTS and a VINTAGE FLAMING LIPS SHIRT (if you think this sentence is jarring, that's what the outfit this boy had on yesterday was like) need to have a cigar bar fall on them

Morley Timmons (Donna Brown), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 21:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Derby Day hat parade a classic

Wiggy (Wiggy), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 21:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Girls in hats = automatically cute.

I have too much hair, for hats.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 21:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I have this slinky velvet beret-style hat I love wearing, especially good for Bad Hair Days. I can't find it at the moment, woe!

I love hats!

I bought a black fedora the other day. It has a sort of felt coating. Can I wear it in heavy rain? Can I wear it in light rain? What about if I spray scotchguard on it? Is it best to have it tipped back or tipped forward or straight level?

Affectian (Affectian), Thursday, 15 December 2005 20:28 (twenty years ago)

It's kinda like this material: http://www.hats.com/isroot/Hats/SiteImages/Items/G204025.jpg

Affectian (Affectian), Thursday, 15 December 2005 20:30 (twenty years ago)

That looks like wool or beaver felt - which is fine for wet weather, but you may want to have it blocked every once in a while.

Jaq (Jaq), Thursday, 15 December 2005 21:02 (twenty years ago)

one year passes...

I need a hat. It's cold and it rains. And it gets windy downtown.

I'd like something that's "dress casual". I'm not going to wear a baseball cap or a knit toque to work. I'm not going to wear a fedora either.

Any suggestions?

Hats can be classic unless there's a whiff of "I'm wearing a hat" about the hat, in which case it's dud.

fifteen years pass...

^ I've sort of been pondering this same conundrum. As a bald guy, I need head coverage in the sun. I have a nice-looking baseball cap and a slouchy beanie (which doesn't slouch as much as it should because my head is large), but would love something that is equally casual, but is not one of those choices.

I recently learned that there was a hat shop downtown. I thought, "Welllll, maybe I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and go get my head measured. Maybe, just maybe, they'll have something there that doesn't make me look like a member of the Squirrel Nut Zippers."

I very much like the IDEA of hats. I own quite a few: several Harris tweed caps, a tweed bucket hat, waxed cotton bucket or fisherman’s hat, cotton flat cap. But I can’t seem to wear any of them without my head getting hot and itchy, even in cold weather. They usually feel too tight. If they’re not tight, they’re too loose, so keep blowing off in the wind, but even when they’re loose they still make my head feel hot and itchy. Basically, I buy hats from time to time but end up rarely if ever wearing them.

dubmill, Monday, 6 November 2023 12:56 (two years ago)

Hats as a fashion accessory? Maybe not a full-on dud, but awfully dicey for anyone not a fashionista.

Hats as a functional covering, useful for shedding rain, staying warm, or shading your head from sun? Classic.

more difficult than I look (Aimless), Monday, 6 November 2023 19:02 (two years ago)

I saw a funny meme of Little Steven asking all his unadorned E Street cohort, "remember when we all wore hats?"

I hate wearing hats, I avoid it as much as possible, which is more difficult as my hair thins, because now I need to wear a hat a lot of the time in winter *and* summer.

brimstead, Monday, 6 November 2023 19:38 (two years ago)

Ötzi the Iceman whose preserved corpse was discovered protruding from a glacier in the Italian Alps wore a bearskin cap. I admit it was more ratty than natty, but Ötzi is k-classic and therefore so is his hat.
