What I mean by that is...

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 1 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

...this, a newly formed YahooGroup set up by Tom, expressly to discuss alternate options for ILx in case greenspun.com is no longer viable one way or another. Thanks to him for that, please join if you're interested!

yahoo is not being very cooperative with me. ill keep trying but let me just say that i'd like to stay in touch with any and all of you if this board ever vanishes or the forum is taken elsewhere, etc.

Ron, Wednesday, 1 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorry Mike I didn't know about that one when I set the new one up.

THE SITUATION

We know, from other forums, that Greenspun.com is eventually going to go down permanently because Phil Greenspun isn't maintaining this server any more. I've emailed Phil asking him to confirm this but the info is from people (eg the Countryside moderator) who have talked directly to him about it. The payment/registration thing he talks about on the front of greenspun.com seems to be a bit of a red herring.

So we need to decide what, if anything, happens then. On the Yahoo! list - which is open to everyone, the approval thing is a formality - we're looking into replacement formats, including coding our own, and into options for archiving some/all of the threads here.

The Yahoo! List is not going to be any kind of ILX replacement, by the way, it's just an admin thing.

Tom, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

How many megabytes are we up to now, BTW? (I just hope that everything can be moved over when greenspun.com dies. I'm crossing my fingers.)

Christine "Green Leafy Dragon" Indigo, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

How many megabytes are we up to now, BTW?

I've taken it upon myself to start archiving ILx threads on my hard- drive, and based on what I have so far, the total size for both ILM and ILE should be roughly 35MB each. Yeah, that's it, believe it or not.

Michael Daddino, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm glad we are back!

About archiving:

I could when I get home just systemically open old threads and take them out of my temp internet files and save them somewhere else on my hard-drive. So, then at least some of them would be safe and could be uploaded to new server etc.

Is this a good idea, or totally fool-hardy?

jel --, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm already on 12ft Lizards, should I join the other one as well?

nyrrrgh, multiplicity.

DV, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think we assume Mike is in charge of archiving and if he needs any help he can shout.

Tom, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hurrah, we're back! Yahoo has been giving me shit and I couldn't join 12ftlizards for some reason. I feel so left out. *sniff*

Sam, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

heheh, 12 foot lizards. you really are interweb mentalists, aren't you? :)

katie, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

People who can't join 12ftlizards should email me with the address they want subscribed and I will add them directly. It's very unexciting, mostly talk about servers etc. but it's useful for when the forum next goes down.

Tom, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

People should put more photos on 12ftlizards as N. said. I have a morbid and burning desire to know what ILxers look like.

Ronan, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hurrah! We're back! The last two days at work were so bad - I had to do stuff and all that. I couldn't get on the yahoo thing because I don't think they like me (and I kept putting in the wrong password).

Jonnie, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What about ezboard.com?

Chris, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

some people don't have access to yahoo boards at work, like me. I'll be left out, boo hoo.

Chris, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The community page - http://www.freakytrigger.co.uk/community/ - will run any news we get on the Yahoo! group. You won't be left out of anything apart from discussions about servers, believe me.

Tom, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That's good, because for some odd reason Yahoo hates me and will not let me get an account or anything. Maybe they just have good taste or can see that there's a tiny hole in my shirt, I don't know.

Nicole, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ezboard.com has WAY TOO MANY POPUPS. ick.

maura, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

jel and mike d: of course those threads are saved as documents not live threads tho (saved as live threads may be impossible, i have no idea: there is a feature in the moderator's pages for "saving everything" which i think saves it in some kind of salvageable formatg but wd i suspect take abt three days to download - maybe not with broadband tho... )

mark s, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Providing the posts are still separate and the email address and name of poster clearly separated from them turning 'dead' documents into live threads should be perfectly possible. Text munging into databases is really not that hard.

RickyT, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

but wd i suspect take abt three days to download - maybe not with broadband tho... )

Or with the major connection we have at work here?

Alan Trewartha, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

When I get broadband I will download everything and burn it onto CDs, then.

Tom, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, hell, I have broadband, I could probably download it all directly tonight or something. But the question is, how do I do that without going thread by thread...which could be tedious.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

well doesn't it download the whole lot (ie goes from thread to thread of its own robotic accord?)

ned as you have moderator privs on ilm why don't you give it a trial run? (ie not whole thing unless it proves very extremely quick), but an hour's worth say? to see what happens and what you're given? then email choice bits of what you get to our various willing programmers (eg not me)

mark s, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I can do that, but somebody's going to have to remind me what the password and all is (via private mail, of course).

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think we should just all move into a big house in the country together. It will be the ILx commune. We can shave our heads.

S., Friday, 3 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

these people wouldn't care if we used their board I bet
