Okay, I've used Wachovia for around ten years, with little to no problems, but this year it's been a bad year. First off two of my paychecks bounced earlier this year, despite my employer having plenty of money. I was charged a $20 fee for each of these.
Recently I flipped out because I had an overdrawn account that incurred several hundred dollars in fees at a time when I don't even have a steady job. They charge $35 per each overdraft charge, which sucked because it was a full week after my account was overdrawn that I got a card in the mail saying "Uh oh". Obviously a big chunk of this was me not paying attention to how much I had in the bank, yet the first two overdraft fees were incurred while I still had over $50 in my account.
All that was resolved a week ago and they refunded some of those overdraft charges. Yet, I just checked my account balance to find a $10 service fee tacked on. I'm heading out the door right now to the local branch to ask them what the deal is and then probably close my account.

it pays to keep track of your checking account balance

Definitely, and that's my fault. But I'm still looking at $150+ in unrelated fees that just show up as "service fees" on the website, with no further explanation.

USAA never does any of this shit
― El Tomboto, Tuesday, 18 November 2008 22:14 (seventeen years ago)
on my USAA visa, my minimum payment every month is $0, so even if I'm late the only "fee" I get slapped with is interest
invisible "service charges" vs check cashing/payday loan joints (at least the latter are up-front about how much they plan to fuck you for)
― El Tomboto, Tuesday, 18 November 2008 22:15 (seventeen years ago)
I just spent $9 on groceries and got charged $10 in service fees (with over $500 in the bank). I think I'm on someone's shit list.
USAA?

One of my friends was trying to convince me for a while that Eminem was hired by the Army and that there were all kind of hidden messages in his music and album artwork that were supposed to subliminally convince kids to sign up.

Turns out the $10 service fee was because my account balance did not remain over $500. A few months ago my checkbook was stolen and I had to close the account and start a new one so instead of putting me under the 'free' account like I had for the past 10+ years (which incurs no such fees) they signed me up for a standard account, which does. Before switching back to the free one I asked what the difference, besides that fact, was. There was no difference. It's merely there to fuck people over that don't know about it.
