Snapshot! (you decide on the subject you wish to talk about! :)

jel --, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

(What you did when Greenspun was down April 30 - May 1st?)

Alan T, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Although a true snapshot would be what we are doing at this very moment, all the users of ILE suspended in time in front of their computer screens.

At this very moment I've been in work for half an hour and I am making far too much noise typing due to the masses of indian bangles sloshing about on my arms.

Anna, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I just catalogued a book on Maternity statistics from 1994 and I'm listening to the Rentals.

jel --, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I need to go home at lunchtime, because I forgot my phone with the extremely urgent and key contact number for our thick bitch of a 'landlady' on it. I am very angry at myself. I am a grump.

Sarah, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

just found out me cheese+onion crisps have animal - ugh - in them. am tryin to re-read 'le grand meaulnes'. wish i could mow tha lawn.

a-33, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am currently watching the little bit of paper float through the air repeatedly between Mr Gates's little yellow folders. I spend a lot of time doing that. Oh, and psyching myself up for looking at lots of RAT BRAINS when my neuroscience journal finishes processing. Why 'landlady'? Is she more of a landwoman?

MarkH, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

THEY ARE DRILLING RIGHT OUTSIDE AGAIN. How much goddamned tarmac can there be to dig up? Where can I buy those industrial noise protection ear muffs?

Ellie, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

'Landstupidfcukingcow' is more like it.

Sarah, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I too am having fun with Mr Gate's little yellow folders as part of my fiddling around with the fuxoring build process (not in my bloody job description, this).

RickyT, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am wondering if I can get a second job and work from 6pm till 2am on top on top of 9-5 for a few weeks.

Sarah, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ellie: Wickes! (I think!)

jel --, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

definitely not a land girl tho, that's something kwite different.

MarkH, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am extremely tired even now so I think I could probably not. Although I will contact them and see how long they would want someone for. I want money.

Sarah, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't think I could manage that Starry. Two 11 hour days on the trot has absolutely done me in. The thought of working 13 hour days for weeks on end doesn't even bear thinking about.

RickyT, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

White Sluts Cheating And Fucking Black Lovers

kiwi, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Blimey not 13 but 16! No WAY!

RickyT, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Bums, I will see if they have any weekend positions avaliable as 2am is too much!!

Sarah, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Make sure it's worth it Sarah, you might not earn that much because you usually get taxed more on a second job.

Anna, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

RITE where is my rich husband/illegal CASH IN HAND MONEY eh?

Sarah, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sarah, I (sort of) did this once, I was getting in a credit card pickle (a bit like now, oh dear) and spent six weeks working 9-5 in my regular job then doing 7-midnight in a local pub 6 nights a week. I did it for 6 weeks, my social life SUCKED but at least I got to pay off my debts & stuff. If you know it's short term then fine, but if you think you'll have to do it for more than a couple of months DON'T as you will go mental / die.

Emma, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

There just aren't enough rich and kindly benefactors out there. It's an outrage.

Matt Fallaize, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Thought: Does anyone read what I type (here)?
Playing: Herbert - Second Hand Sounds
Reading: Roy Shuker's Undahstanding Pop-ya-lah Musick
Feeling: Sleepdeprived (waddayathinkwhenyouonlysleptaboutfourhours)
Need to: call the doctah
Just ate: pizza
Playing Slayer's Reign In Blood on my headphones walking through the city during the day is extremely weird.

nathalie, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My apartment was ON FIRE this week and all anyone can do is make stupid Prodigy jokes to me...le sigh. Nobody was hurt and the damage isn't too horrible, so I guess it could have been worse.

Nicole, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sarah its not worth doing unless it is (nudge nudge) cash in hand. You'll just have to cut back on the Afro-Ken goodies.

Pete, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Wah. And the fuXoRing booze.

Sarah, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

(That said, need anyone behind the bar at SOAS eh?)

Sarah, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No booze + no Afro-Ken = a sad life indeed.

RickyT, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I still have most of a bottle of Triple Sec Sarah, you can have that. Afro-Ken is rub and you'll be well rid of him.

Tom, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Had a splitting headache for two days which did not shift despite best efforts of boyfriend.

suzy, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am in a dodgy little internet place in Walthamstow, the door is open and traffic is roaring past, the chair bacvk is faux leather and thus a bit sticky, S club are on the under age girl who seems to be running the place's stereo. The mood is very very good.

chris, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorry Sarah we only employ SOAS Students. How about ansering one of those ads ina bus stop saying you can earn 200 nicker a week FROM HOME!!!!

I'm putting off doing the Unions Income Tax return by listening to Asha Bhosle and swinging my foot under the desk.

Pete, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm trying to figure out what to put in my SOFT report (don't ask) and playing with my new short hair - waxy.

Jonnie, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm not dressed yet and I'm trying to decide on something interesting to write about Rupert Murdoch besides he is a bad man, twelve foot lizards etc.

What will happen is, I won't bother doing it. I'm watching Fanatic also. The fan is hysterically crying and Sarah Michelle Gellar is looking nice. Actually Sarah Michelle is crying too now.

Also I'm trying to get over this awful hangover. And Anthony just IMED me!

Ronan, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Waaaah. Huge work fuck up. Although I am pretty sure that T___ has the papers that I am being blamed for losing. I have been crying in the toilets, running to the tube station, running up to the Thameslink platform, running to my flat, picking up phone, sprinting back to train station, panting all the way to Elephant and Castle, phoning estate agent phoning sockfarming landlady, things finally sorted - realising running gets you sweaty, jumping on tube, sprinting back to work, buying egg sammiche and kettle chips, forgetting to buy drink, sitting at desk, typing this, want any other job but this one (maybe not the earn 20000 working from home type thing though) and am STRESSED.

Sarah, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Now I would like to sleep. BROWSE THE JOB SITES.

Sarah, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My head is shrieking for a pint. Groo.

RickyT, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have just had a moment Katie will sympathise with as I got back from lunch & was mid-mouthful when my boss comes up and says 'what's that you're eating' 'Well it's a sandwich' 'Yes well what's in it?'(grumpyily but in a jokey sort of way grrr)'chicken' 'yes what kind of chicken?' Arrghhhh. Leave me alone. In case anyone is interested it was coronation chicken for the jubilee.

(Obviously Katie will not sympathise with the chicken element).

Emma, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh god now I feel like an uberbitch as he has just given me a blueberry muffin to apologise for interrupting my lunch. Bye bye pretence at diet, hello nummy muffin...

Emma, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am now more relaxed because at 6oklok my guts will stop shrieking. (Gym what gym)

Sarah, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My mood has slipped cos I've seen pix from the club night on saturday. everyone looks young, cool and desirable except me, who looks lumpish, wearing cheapo H&M top. must make self more desirable to gurls. humph.

Alan Trewartha, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think Katie *will* sympathise with the chicken element, actually. Condone; that's a whole different kettle of mermaids. I'm a pedant! I'm a pedant! ra Ra rA ! My snapshot would be like this: Where = college, what = procrastinating before doing actual proper work, why = had loong lecture this morning, lunch = baked potato, travel = tube closed, buses, late for lecture, mental state = in denial, slight headache and fatigue. clothing = same things I always wear, shoes falling apart. physical state = lamentable, sore legs and throat and sniffy nose.

alix, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Where = Sweaty computer room with laptop hooked up to the stars (=worryingly fast internet connection)

Physical state = No shower this morning, hot weather => sweaty

What = wondering whether the oft mentioned long-term fancy Laura might FANCY ME! (I haven't seen that French girl again). And yes jel, she likes The Apples In Stereo. Do people want details?

Also pondering whether to go see Crossroads tonight. hmmm.

Graham, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Where: office. What: drilling, mainly. And more drilling. I can feel my teeth shaking. Oh, what could that be? More drilling. I am trying to DRRRRIIIIILLLLL prep a seminar on phenomenological DDDDDRRRRRRIIIIILLLLL sociology. The book features a gestalt-type fig. of a duck that is also a RABBIT. Amazing. DDDDRRRRRIIIILLLL. I am wearing flipflops cos it's warm in here (joke: what do you call a French man wearing sandals? Philippe F-lop). Drilling. (PS: thanx Jel I will see if industrial ear muffs are worth the investment).

Ellie, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Is 'drill' onomatopaeic? Is 'DDDDDRRRRRRIIIIllll' (the D-D-D-D RI-RI-RI-RI bits?)

Ellie, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am wondering why I just got an email from some bloke asking my advice on getting into hard core porn movies. Er, did anyone else get this or am I yet again the victim of a pervertalist mentalist?

Emma, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ellie vs. OED: it's sad because I like your idea better.

"Known only from 17th c.; cf. DRILL n.2 All the senses are found in Du. drillen to drill, bore; to turn round; to shake, brandish; to drill, form to arms; to run hither and thither; to go through the manual exercise, MDu. drillen to bore, turn in a circle, brandish; cf. MLG. drillen to roll, to turn, MHG. and mod.Ger. drillen to turn, to round off, to bore, to drill soldiers. MHG. gedrollen ‘rounded’, drall ‘(twisted) tight’, point to an old strong verb, of ablaut series *rell-, rall-, rull-. The English verb and n. were prob. from Dutch; they are not connected etymologically with thrill, thirl, OE. yrelian, though sense 1 is identical in sense with it."

nabisco%%, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

And Emma, do you not recall posting The Great Emma's-Boyfriend Porn Scam? Perhaps he just thought you sounded very competent and knowledgeable.

nabisco%%, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Wondering why Worktown are so stupid. And having someone let me out of a t-junction who I worked with 6 months ago. Blimey.

Bill, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

might FANCY ME

Don't do it Graham. You'll be far happier ALONE. I feel like I'm on some kind of drug for the last ten days. I even went out with my class last night. TO A PUB!!!

Unless of course you want to get involved in which case ignore my two cents.

Ronan, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Crossroads is great! She likes the Apples In Stereo! Wow! Now ask her if she knows the words to "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" by Starship.

jel --, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Quietly listening to the first Mojave 3 album at work for AMG review purposes (but I'll always listen to that one again anyway), looking forward to my date tonight, enjoying life, etc. Episode 2 in two weeks, SFA in five days, payday yesterday = all is well, for now.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You're one to talk, Mr. Chipmunk Face.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 4 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Arsenal (boo!) just won the cup and now I am listening to Napalm Death!

jel --, Saturday, 4 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Today I washed my sandwich toaster (left out and free for anyone to use in a student house for six months - YUK YUK YUK). The inside is full of congealed cheese (and god knows what else) fat. Then I discovered Freaks and Geeks is my favourite program ever (simultaneous empathy/cringing) (please don't leave me E4). Then I wondered whether the 24 hour computer lab is open on Sundays, then I walked into Manchester and people tried to rob me. I ignored them and they went away.

Graham, Sunday, 5 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i am filling in time before my 10am lecture, which is Music 303: Music in Contemporary Culture.

di, Sunday, 5 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ronan, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

RickyT, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm doing a search on peer education and diabetes!

jel --, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Has anyone been confirmed yet? If you were to believe www.efestivals.com every band on earth is playing. I bought my ticket based on Orbital confirming themselves for the Saturday night.

Ronan, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm gonna go to From India with Love! And maybe Meatloaf too!
