So who were the real winners yesterday. The TUC and their well organised march, the blokes playing football on Oxford Street, the police, the cyclists, Le Pen supporters, Le Pen hataz, anarchists in Sydney.

Or was it the bird who dressed up like a mermaid to protest against global warning who got in all the news bulletins.

ANd none of the newshounds got to ask the bloody obvious question that if there is global warming, the one sector of wildlife which will not be affected is fish (and by fabulous extension : Mermaids).

Pete, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

If I remember my Blue Planet correctly, climate change is affecting marine life quite a bit.

I think the "Free The Miami Five" lot came out well.

Jeff W, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I won cos a) I got to dress down and wear comfy clothes and b) I got to go home at 4 o'clock.

Emma, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

pfft. May 1st is a holiday here, so I had the whole day off!

Jeff W, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Double pfft, we get next Monday for the Bank Holiday and last year I had 1 May off too so I didn't get squished by the police / protestors.

Emma, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I won, I spent most of the day lying on the sofa, watching people being far too active.

chris, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

If I remember my Blue Planet correctly, climate change is affecting marine life quite a bit. Yes your right- plankton and the food chain.

kiwi, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

j>e>l, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

SHe didn't dress up as a planktong though.

Pete, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What did she do? Which annoying fool from MTV? I'm watching Fanatic right now, my dose of indignation for the day.

Jonnie, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Russel Brand is quite funny sometimes. *hides*.

Sometimes the people he's talking to are almost crying.

Ronan, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

a communitst freind of mine invited me to the Workers March For Justice, as opposed to the May Day Parade.

anthony, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Me and FatNick spent the day walking round London with THE PINEFOX of all people!

DG, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

He didn't have his guitar with him, did he?

RickyT, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"The protest's going well, now to get out the ol' acoustic..."
*riot police move swiftly in: anarchists and bankers stand shoulder-to-shoulder cheering*

mark s, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

He didn't have his guitar, no. He had his magic Pinefox spectacles though.

DG, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

So DG are you counting yourself as a MayDay winner or a MayDay loser?

Emma, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am the winner because this year I *didn't* get detained in Oxford Circus for 8 hours. I'd say that was a result.

alix, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Same as Alix.

DG, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Were you there last year DG?

alix, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes I was, I got stuck in Holles Street.

DG, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Nightmare. I was in Ox Circ. Bloody awful.

alix, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am a WINNER! I may well have found love yesterday (or at least someone charming who likes me a lot, anyway).

Graham, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Graham: Did she or he look like Jared Leto?

Nicole, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Are you trying to insinuate something?

Graham, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorry Graham, I am just being silly...

Nicole, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorry, I was being sillily defensive too.

NO.

Graham, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

was the Pinefox protesting for it to be 1985 again?

jel --, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I may well have found love yesterday

Is that that young gamine you were all fluttery about?

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't understand this thread.

lawrence kansas, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No, Ned, it's the B+S fan I've been fluttery about since January. Well it's not like I fancy her as such, I just think "We so should be dating" whenever I talk to her.

Graham, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

was the Pinefox protesting for it to be 1985 again?

1989 surely?

RickyT, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

He's in LURVE.

Ed, Friday, 3 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I was a May Day winner. I'm always a May Day winner. The last time I wasn't was eight years ago. Ayrton Senna died and then I had a rubb birthday evening. Three years later, Labour got in which was pretty good and made up for the 1994 thing. Now people shout and helicopters circle overhead. I like all the commotion that accompanies m(a)y day.
