but but but can't we have the gamefaqs vs imdb boards, too?

Brotherhood of Stealing Shit to Sell to Trader Caravans (kingfish), Saturday, 29 November 2008 01:03 (seventeen years ago)

no, because they're not going to shape public discourse as ruthlessly as the other two are

J0hn D., Saturday, 29 November 2008 01:04 (seventeen years ago)

youtube comments are ALL gold

I know, right?, Saturday, 29 November 2008 01:05 (seventeen years ago)

i just want to know what happens to the winners

sage irish linen (gbx), Saturday, 29 November 2008 01:06 (seventeen years ago)

like, I'd be willing to bet that if we could look ahead to the transcripts of the 2028 Vice Presidential Debates, they'd be almost indistinguishable from this

J0hn D., Saturday, 29 November 2008 01:06 (seventeen years ago)

voted youtube comments - at least they're not policed by those awful pedants

youtube comments are kind of amazing because the format gives the illusion of fostering discussion while actually making it totally impractical to do anything more than call the person who posted the video a faggot.

With a little bit of gold and a Peja (bernard snowy), Saturday, 29 November 2008 01:53 (seventeen years ago)

I mean, that has to be the worst user interface ever, right? you'll see comments on the first page that show up again on the fifth page because they're actually replies to things on the sixth page, only the thing on the sixth page was really a replay to something on the twelfth page that makes no sense whatsoever taken out of context. it's like some sort of nightmarish Beckett story.

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

At first I couldn't decide which of these poll options to choose because both are so amazing in their own ways! I decided the only way to solve this dilemma is by comparing the wiki discussion of the Insane Clown Posse wikipedia entry to the youtube comments that can be found under ICP videos and this is where the strength of wiki discussion became apparent. The ridiculousness of a self-proclaimed ICP expert attempting to clean up a pseudo-scholarly article written by ICP fans is a thing of beauty. For example:

"Language-wise, the authors need to use a lot less commas, which is rendering many sentences meaningless (so I have no idea how to edit them). Also, some portions need to be re-written for non-expert readers.

I am listing here some examples of awkward phrases which are better left to other experts to handle:

(1)"Insane Clown Posse has dedicated followers, known as Juggalos and Juggalettes."

This sentence is confusing because it makes a non-expert reader wonder why these followers are called these odd names. Consider changing it to something like "...followers, whom the band calls Juggalos...""

YouTube comments are amusing in their idiocy. Wiki talk pages make me want to hurt a dude.

BIG HOOS is those british white steens (BIG HOOS aka the steendriver), Sunday, 30 November 2008 01:06 (seventeen years ago)

i didn't even know people actually discussed on the wiki pages. i imagine it's some pretty embarassing shit, though, and at least youtubers are sometimes hilarious

k3vin k., Sunday, 30 November 2008 01:09 (seventeen years ago)

Youtube comments - because the way they organise the first page of comments often creates a series of hillarious non sequiturs

Maxemillian, Sunday, 30 November 2008 17:05 (seventeen years ago)

and who the fuck goes to Youtube to discuss anything anyway?

Maxemillian, Sunday, 30 November 2008 17:05 (seventeen years ago)

often allways

Maxemillian, Sunday, 30 November 2008 17:06 (seventeen years ago)

it's Wikipedia discussion pages for me. The people on YouTube are just dumbasses to the MAX, but the Wikipedia fellas are PRETENDING to be smart and important, it's awesome :)
spent half an hour last night reading the Stalin discussion page, full of Stalin supporters complaining about the POV (he's not a dictator!)

Ludo, Sunday, 30 November 2008 20:37 (seventeen years ago)

I hate Wikipedia comments because some of the people think there is a lot at stake. Too much drama.

u s steel, Sunday, 30 November 2008 21:42 (seventeen years ago)

I voted for wikipedia - the drama to be found there is more lulzy b/c they mean it, maaan.

This page stands out as a particular example of circular, tiresome Wikipedia discussions. I'll go with YouTube.
