My mother did not do pets. We had a puppy once, for about a week before it went back to the ASPCA shelter. I had a goldfish for a time.
In a stroke of genius, my brother proposed we buy her a hamster as a Mother's Day gift. Mother's Day had been over for almost a month, but this did not deter us. We bought the little critter and took it home and all innocently presented her with her "gift".
The subterfuge worked. We named it Spiro, as this was a topical name in the summer of 1968. Spiro lived with us for more than a year. We lost him for a while, but one evening heard him scratching inside the couch, from which we retrieved him, hungry and thirsty, but alive.
I was the only person in the house when he died. I knew he was dying. It was a bit sad, but I was strong. We buried him somewhere in a flower bed in the backyard. We weren't all that particular about the place. I think we chose it because the ground was easier to dig.
