Over jarmies I guess is ok maybe?
― Trayce, Sunday, 30 November 2008 01:34 (seventeen years ago)
It's too warm to wear a sweatshirt but not warm enough for just a T-shirt.
― Among the Living Daylights (J3ff T.), Sunday, 30 November 2008 01:34 (seventeen years ago)
why cant you wear a hooded or something

Robes are the garment of kings. If you wear a bathrobe over clothes you've also got to be wearing a crown, preferably a paper one that comes with a Burger King kids meal.
― saudade, Sunday, 30 November 2008 01:58 (seventeen years ago)
and what on your feet?
― roxymuzak, Sunday, 30 November 2008 01:59 (seventeen years ago)
Maybe depends on robe. Terry towelling robe over jeans and shirt = wtf are you on, those are meant to soak up water after shower.
Silky Hefner gown over a summer dress = come in spinner.
Or um something, not that I have any idea.
― Trayce, Sunday, 30 November 2008 02:00 (seventeen years ago)
But the terry cloth robes are so warm!
― Among the Living Daylights (J3ff T.), Sunday, 30 November 2008 02:08 (seventeen years ago)
warmer...than a hooded????
― roxymuzak, Sunday, 30 November 2008 02:10 (seventeen years ago)
Well, no, but that's the point. It isn't cold enough for that.

I know! It's the one on the cover of Schmilsson, which he then used for the cover of his cd.

HA HA HA. I so agree with you Jeff. I do this all the time, and no it's not a particularly attractive or sexy look it is warmy toasty. Plus, at my house, it's certainly not going to be seen by anyone but the cat who doesn't give a crap what I wear.

notice they never sell a black one. "note: too satanic"

wearing a hat with a tassle is always a "do"
― roxymuzak, Sunday, 30 November 2008 11:45 (seventeen years ago)
There isn't really much point in wearing a bathrobe over clothes unless the clothes are the shittiest sort of ancient 'I have no intention whatsoever of leaving the house' garments ever. Then it's quite satisfying. It's all about nailing that 'I am going to spend the entire day bumming around' vibe.
― Chopper Aristotle (Matt DC), Sunday, 30 November 2008 11:47 (seventeen years ago)
kaykay, he actually had a whole bunch of bathrobes. This was just his fave.
And Nick, thanks for the inadvertent plug. Bathrobes will always be cool indoors, and if you're the kind who can swing that shit outdoors, at the car wash, etc., it's probably because you don't care in the first place. So it's a thing like rhombuses and rectangles.
― morningsaystoidleon, Sunday, 30 November 2008 20:00 (seventeen years ago)
i was wearing scrubs and a t-shirt last night, so "clothes" is sorta stretching it i guess
― Tanganyika laughter epidemic (gbx), Sunday, 30 November 2008 20:09 (seventeen years ago)
ahahah I did this last night cause I was so fucking cold but too lazy to go downstairs (from the attic) for some jacket or whatever.
― Nathalie (stevienixed), Sunday, 30 November 2008 20:23 (seventeen years ago)
I am honestly surprised that this is even a question! Maybe it's because my family always called them "housecoats" rather than "bathrobes," but I always though the whole purpose of a robe was to wear it over your clothes (be they street-worthy or pajamas or the shittiest sort of ancient 'I have no intention whatsoever of leaving the house' garments ever) when you are inside your home and cold. I would admit to having a greater than average tendency to change into the shittiest sort of ancient 'I have no intention whatsoever of leaving the house' garments ever at every available opportunity (and then, sometimes, leaving the house in them anyway), though, so maybe my perception is skewed.
― atty at LOL (Jenny), Sunday, 30 November 2008 20:33 (seventeen years ago)
i had the idea that housecoats were somehow subtly different than bathrobes

housecoat is flannel, bathrobe is some fluffy, synthetic fleecey stuff that is unbelievably comfortable.

you put on a robe when you get up and don't want to shower/put on real clothes yet, but need more warmth. same reason you sleep under sheets/comforters, only less so. the robe is for the in-between lounge zone. a sweatshirt, often heavier and more constricting, is a little further out on the -wear scale.

as mdc suggests above this is the sublime bit of sprezzatura to ennoble your house clothing
it must be said that people's understanding of house clothes has been known to vary greatly however

bathrobe over clothes is the perfect expression of aggressive casualness with a touch of warmth. In the winter I wear one to work on pajamas Friday. I am the only one that calls it that.
