Only a casual fan myself, but now that the fuss has died down a bit I'm interested to see if there's a clear winner here.

For me it's Azkaban as a no-brainer. This series was a bit of a victim of it's own success, artistically speaking. Book 3 is the last one before a combination of editorial timidity and JK believing her own hype turned the books from something charming, quirky and inventive into a rambling RPG sourcebook. I still lapped them all up like crack, of course.

Harry Potter and the Milf Island

From North to Ibiza (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 9 December 2008 02:03 (sixteen years ago)

So, uh, back in real thread land:

"Prisoner" is probably the best as just a book for book's sake - tightly constructed, clear, its tangents pay off and the suspense is earned.

That said, from a fan's perspective it's hard to forget the hours of delirious delight in the later, longer books, which had plenty of dud moments and ill-considered major plot points - but so much delicious plot and twists and turns and payoffs. I just voted for "Order" because I thought it was great how the status quo got thrown off by the arrival of Umbridge ...but now I remember the TERRIBLE, confusing climax and the stupid 'Oh right, why didn't I think to use my magic mirror' knife-twist at the end.

"Prince" is similarly saddled with the inane 'guess I'll keep using this mysterious book of evil spells' subplot - all of this stuff kind of makes it hard to accept that Harry is growing up and getting smarter, because he keeps making the same stupid mistakes.

The final one is pretty damn great all the way through, and does the most to break the format - I LOVED their pointless, grouchy wanderings in the wilderness, seemed really plausible and suddenly made me feel like I was reading the Prydain books which is a good thing. The climax had a little bit too much Matrix to it, but there are so many badass bits along the way that I can forgive that. This should have gotten my vote I think.

i dont know what i would have voted for but i think the "private lessons" with dumbledore in half-blood prince were my favorite bit of writing in the whole series

the first book is the one i remember the most fondly but i was like 12 or 13 years old when i read it (geez did this series really start that long ago?) so i was just the right age to fully appreciate it without noticing any flaws or poor writing.

How the fuck did I miss this thread?????

Sorceror: Great!
Chamber: Great! The best bits are the ones that didn't make it into the movie (the Singing Valentine)
Prisoner: Great!
Goblet: Good, almost great, but I think Rowling overdid it with the romance/Yule Ball subplot. That could've been easily edited out.
Phoenix: AWESOME! Probably the best in the series. Umbridge is the best character in the whole series.
Prince: Good. Slughorn is very one-note. It just seemed like his only purpose in the book was for the Horcruxs, and then after that, there wasn't anything for him to do. Was he even in the last book?
Hallows: Blarg!! The series ends on such a rotten note. The whole "Dumbledore might actually be a BAD guy!" subplot was SO SO STUPID!! And oh how I hated the ending. Rowling spends like 300 pages all setting up PERFECTLY how Harry is going to die at the end. Well, not only doesn't he die, but he goes and lives a happy life and it's 30 years later and they all have kids and everything is so nice and pretty. Vomit. Fuck you, JK Rowling.

No Edward Cullen, no credibility.

Event Horizon (Nicole), Thursday, 5 March 2009 20:39 (sixteen years ago)

I like the ridiculously happy ending! Killing Harry off would have been kind of easy and nail the "epic" tone, but it would sort of miss what I saw as the point of the series - all Harry wanted was a normal life with a family and so on, he didn't ask to be a messiah or anything, and all his happiest moments came from being a peaceful wizard with his peaceful wizard chums and surrogate Weasley family.

Been reading the series with my daughter, and having taken some time off, we are now up to the fourth book. Which is well-written but, especially after Azkaban, truly a narrative slog. 200+ pages in and literally nothing has happened beyond the opening drama, and I haven't even gotten to the romance stuff. Was she being paid by the word?

Dick of Magic

coffeetripperspillerslyricmakeruppers (Latham Green), Thursday, 23 June 2011 17:06 (fourteen years ago)

I decided to watch (or rewatch, in some cases) all of the movies in the last two weeks. I very much enjoyed Prisoner of Azkaban, liked the first one, and kind of could give two shits about any of the rest of them, up until Deathly Hallows Pt.1, which was actually pretty fun. It becomes increasingly obvious that Harry is kind of an emotional slut, and his nigh-romantic affection for father-types is sort of offensive and badly written. I mean, he loves Hagrid for exactly three books, then casts Hagrid aside for a new older boyfriend, Sirius, with whom he spends almost no time but develops a great and abiding fixation. Then, Sirius dies and Harry goes all googly over Dumbledore, until Dumbledore dies. Harry is actually a lot like Snape, a dickhead to potential allies b/c he feels wronged by his peers. He is passive 90% of the time, a mean stupid jerk for 5%, and vengefully righteous for the remaining time. He might be the most unlikeable, unsympathetic, passive, and whiny character to carry such a big series on his shoulders. Note: Radcliffe is actually a passingly decent actor by halfway through, but Rupert Grint is always great, and Emma Watson is unbelievably terrible throughout and acts only with her eyebrows and a sort of breathiness.

remy bean, Thursday, 23 June 2011 17:13 (fourteen years ago)
