Just saw the Kenneth Anger vol. 1 DVD. WHOA. Whoa. whoa.
That lady in pic #2 is the wife of the late Jack Parsons, rocket fuel engineer and insaniac OTO member/former L. Ron Hubbard housemate. Her name is Cameron something. Anais Nin's in that one (Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome) as well:

How the hell did all these great art fucks get all globbed around the OTO/Crowley/general occult gibberish? It doesn't seem like it could happen today.

I have a lot of affection for both Bowery and Anger.
Something went drastically wrong for Anger in the early 70s. After he returned from France around 1962, he saw the changes in the 60s as a clear indication that everything was happening as predicted - the Age of Aquarius was being ushered in and the Piscean Christian age was on the way out. He felt really plugged into the zeitgeist. Disillusionment set in by the early 70s and he seemed to lose his faith as a film-maker.
It's kind of sad to see him since then reduced to surviving as a legendary figure, having to fan the flames of his 'notoriety' to keep it going. And his former friends such as Jagger, Lennon and JP Getty associated him with being hassled for money and kept their distance.
That biog. is a bit of a hatchet job. I met him in 90s and found him a deeper, charming though troubled, person than that book suggests.

In contrast the biog of Leigh Bowery by Sue Tilly is quite fascinating and well worth reading.
There was a very good UK tv documentary on him a few years ago, which did seem to bring out that a lot of his fashion outfits seem to lose their power when you see them in a museum compared to the shock context of a club or real life. It was good to see Damien Hirst popping up to support them as art.
One highlight of this documentary is the analysis (he he) of the famous enema audience spraying incident - Boy George: "People were horrified being covered in shit...But I was like - it's Leigh Bowery - that's what he does..."

yeah that was a great doc. bbc4 repeated it just 2 or 3 weeks ago actually.

sort of wondering why 'Scorpio Rising' is the one they always play for every Film Studies class across the nation -- watching it again now, I can appreciate it but I can also see why the 20-year old version of me didn't find it too critical to track down his other films. but if I'd seen either "Rabbit's Moon" or "Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome" at 20, that would have been helpful to know about

Is there much documentation of Bowery's work available? Anger is classic, but I don't really have anything to go on in the way of answering the original question.
― Soukesian, Tuesday, 5 August 2008 20:02 (seventeen years ago)

it's great, but the content is more Crowley-soaked. his style was already there by the 50's, so the films that are 30-40 years ahead maybe have more of an edge than the ones that are 10-15 years ahead? vol 2 has the 1979 recut of "Rabbit's Moon", interesting to see after you've seen the first one -- by ditching the Balinese + Doo-Wop 50's soundtrack and splicing it a 70's glampop song it really becomes an outright 80's video, it's amazing how well that song fits the 30-year old images.
of the two vol 1 has more of the films I want to see again.
I'd love to see any Bowery.
― Milton Parker, Tuesday, 5 August 2008 20:25 (seventeen years ago)
Pleasuredome srsly flipped my shit out for two days.
