The Sean Connery Poll

Very little Connery discussion on ILE. For my favorite, I skipped the Bonds and went for the very underrated The Russia House. If you haven't seen Zardoz, get thee to Netflix.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 16:21 (sixteen years ago)

I look forward to reading the comments of the revisionists who vote for the latterday scenery-chewers such as Entrapment and Rising Sun.

Ruudside Picnic (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 9 December 2008 16:28 (sixteen years ago)

Marnie, duh.

Eric H., Tuesday, 9 December 2008 16:29 (sixteen years ago)

would you describe his comatose expression in both those films as scenery chewing?

(I like "Rising Sun," by the way).

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 16:29 (sixteen years ago)

fuck i forgot about Marnie and i already used my vote

Ant Attack.. (Ste), Tuesday, 9 December 2008 16:31 (sixteen years ago)

Where is "The Offence"? One of his best performances!

Ich Ber ein Binliner (Tom D.), Tuesday, 9 December 2008 16:31 (sixteen years ago)

I think he sucks basically, so I went with Time Bandits for sentimental porpoises.

WmC, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 16:32 (sixteen years ago)

"Untouchables" just for the scene where he "interrogates" the corpse outside the cabin where they catch the bootleggers. Also "Outland" for creating believable romantic tension with Frances Sternhagen.

Sword of the Valiant

Lord, this one. Connery and Miles O'Keefe, together at last!

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 16:37 (sixteen years ago)

would you describe his comatose expression in both those films as scenery chewing?
I can't remember what he looked like, but in my mind's ear he slathered on the Scottish brogue (Scottish burr?) pretty good.

Ruudside Picnic (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 9 December 2008 16:39 (sixteen years ago)

He does that in every film he's ever been in

Ich Ber ein Binliner (Tom D.), Tuesday, 9 December 2008 16:40 (sixteen years ago)

Connery and Miles O'Keefe, together at last!

"How much Keefe is in this movie? Miles O'Keefe!"

(</TomServo>)

Emergency Rainbow (Pancakes Hackman), Tuesday, 9 December 2008 16:41 (sixteen years ago)

last crusaed, just because.

darraghmac, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 16:42 (sixteen years ago)

"How much Keefe is in this movie? Miles O'Keefe!"

I was very tempted to post that.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 16:42 (sixteen years ago)

I guess it's time for the "Do people still quote MST3K?" thread.

Emergency Rainbow (Pancakes Hackman), Tuesday, 9 December 2008 16:43 (sixteen years ago)

A given, in my case.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 16:46 (sixteen years ago)

terrible actor in general - best movie on the list is probably Time Bandits, but Zardoz comes close for ulta-ramp classicness.

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 16:47 (sixteen years ago)

Where is "The Offence"? One of his best performances!

Ditto. My favorite aside from the Bonds, however, is The Man Who Would Be King.

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 16:55 (sixteen years ago)

My sources gave me an incomplete list. Where's Darby O'Gill and the Little People??

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 17:01 (sixteen years ago)

Oh yeah. Was Jack Wilde in that one?

Ruudside Picnic (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 9 December 2008 17:02 (sixteen years ago)

Or Kim Darby?

Ruudside Picnic (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 9 December 2008 17:03 (sixteen years ago)

OUTLAND

I guess not on Jack Wild. But customers who bought Darby O'Gill also bought Flight Of The Doves.

Ruudside Picnic (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 9 December 2008 17:06 (sixteen years ago)

For fuck's sake people The Man Who Would Be King!

Anderson Tapes for #2

I've seen 37 of the movies on this list.

Chris Barrus (Elvis Telecom), Tuesday, 9 December 2008 17:18 (sixteen years ago)

lol Family Business.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 17:21 (sixteen years ago)

Does anyone remember SCTV's The Man Who Would Be King Of The Popes?

Ruudside Picnic (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 9 December 2008 17:22 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah I'm a avowed ZARDOZ guy.

Nate Carson, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 21:46 (sixteen years ago)

Though Highlander and Time Bandits could tie with it...

Nate Carson, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 21:47 (sixteen years ago)

sentimental vote for robin and marian, which i loved when i was a kid and in my robin-hood-obsessive phase. i haven't seen it since, i'd like to think it's actually good but i don't know for sure.

tipsy mothra, Thursday, 18 December 2008 00:34 (sixteen years ago)

"The Man Who Would Be King", easily.

Millsner, Thursday, 18 December 2008 02:50 (sixteen years ago)

The Last Crusade, though The Man Who Would Be King is quite nice too.

Tuomas, Thursday, 18 December 2008 07:37 (sixteen years ago)

I was just about to say exactly that, so, uh, Tuomas OTM.

Dan I., Thursday, 18 December 2008 07:45 (sixteen years ago)

ack! I am expected to choose just ONE picture from the actor I would most like to f****?? this is SO bloody unfair. I think he is the most sexy handsome man (still) although he is older than god now, I would still eff him in a heartbeat. I ticked Marnie for my vote, although there are so many films I find awesome: man who would be king, goldfinger, a slew of others. I don't think he's a bad actor, I think he has been limited in his roles. But who cares anyway, he is handsome and sexy and even as an old guy, he is super sexy!

Chris Barrus (Elvis Telecom), Friday, 19 December 2008 01:59 (sixteen years ago)

How'd Diamonds are Forever get so many votes? He was kinda terrible in that, I recall — defintely past his prime as Bond, where he peaked around Goldfinger/Thunderball IMO.

Millsner, Friday, 19 December 2008 03:23 (sixteen years ago)

Very satisfactory results otherwise, though!

Millsner, Friday, 19 December 2008 03:23 (sixteen years ago)

He had that odd thing called star quality, where it didn't matter so much about his acting, he could command your attention just by being onscreen. I know nothing about him as a real person, but RIP.

the unappreciated charisma of cows (Aimless), Saturday, 31 October 2020 16:33 (four years ago)

Feel like I need to see The Offence. I own Outland on Blu-Ray; his work in it is very good, but it's more important IMO as a great example of working-class SF, not unlike Alien.

but also fuck you (unperson), Saturday, 31 October 2020 16:37 (four years ago)

RIP

Alfred otm about how he never did anything big, he just behaved. True to his Bond character; came to the screen fully formed. And really it’s all about the posture & the micro-expressions and/or reactions.

Before Connery broke through as an actor, he was a bodybuilder.

Not in the poll: Hell Drivers (1957), in which he supports leading man Stanley Baker. I still can't quite believe Baker was shortlisted alongside Connery to play Bond.

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 31 October 2020 22:42 (four years ago)

Great stuff in Diamonds: creepy gay couple murder team #representationmatters. High speed car chase in Vegas where Bond drives on two wheels. Lovely photography of low-rise Vegas generally. Cool camera move where the viewer rushes Bond as a henchman coshes him from behind. One of cinema's silliest Howard Hughses. Banger theme and title sequence. Elevator fight is a rare good hand-to-hand in Bond canon, maybe?

Bad movie though, yeah.

edited for dog profanity (sic), Saturday, 31 October 2020 22:55 (four years ago)

#representationmatters

generally a v queer-villain-friendly movie, with Blofeld in drag and the probably-also-a-couple silent female karate swimsuit bodyguards in Howard Hughes' bolthole.

Highlander was shafted. He was great in that. Happy to see Zardoz get at least 1 vote. Never saw The Man Who Would Be King. Looks like that might be a fun tribute viewing

lol I went to cinema to watch Highlander as kid and it was what passed for pure cinema on a grey rainy night back then and had a cracking soundtrack! Zardoz is simply one of the greatest, surprised they never made some terrible 90's reboot like they did with another peak Boorman classic.
