i remember i once bought a bag of BBQ hula hoops for a romanian gypsy once cos the shop was out of bread. she then threw em back in my face! if only she knew hohw tasty they were....

Michael B, Thursday, 11 December 2008 14:36 (sixteen years ago)

original and best

ledge, Thursday, 11 December 2008 14:39 (sixteen years ago)

this is the only crisps product where the 'beef' flavour actually works

Yentl vs Predator (blueski), Thursday, 11 December 2008 14:40 (sixteen years ago)

It's all about the beefy goodness for me too. Salt and Vinegar only marginally nicer than their flatcrisp cousins.

NotEnough, Thursday, 11 December 2008 14:43 (sixteen years ago)

S&V all the way.

nate woolls, Thursday, 11 December 2008 14:44 (sixteen years ago)

Wasn't there a plain cheese one for a while in a yellow packet?

NickB, Thursday, 11 December 2008 14:44 (sixteen years ago)

Original. Don't fuck w/ a classic.

Seanadams Molloy (The stickman from the hilarious 'xkcd' comics), Thursday, 11 December 2008 14:45 (sixteen years ago)

Three out of four of these are unfuckable-with but the cheese and onion one is an abomination. Voted BBQ.

Matt DC, Thursday, 11 December 2008 15:15 (sixteen years ago)

These are still the best crisps available in the UK btw and have been for 20-odd years.

Matt DC, Thursday, 11 December 2008 15:16 (sixteen years ago)

^^^wrong.

Seanadams Molloy (The stickman from the hilarious 'xkcd' comics), Thursday, 11 December 2008 15:16 (sixteen years ago)

McCoys and Sensations are both superior.

Seanadams Molloy (The stickman from the hilarious 'xkcd' comics), Thursday, 11 December 2008 15:16 (sixteen years ago)

May even be tempted to throw Walkers Max in there as well.

Seanadams Molloy (The stickman from the hilarious 'xkcd' comics), Thursday, 11 December 2008 15:17 (sixteen years ago)

Heretic

Ich Ber ein Binliner (Tom D.), Thursday, 11 December 2008 15:17 (sixteen years ago)

I think I prefer Brannigans to all three anyway

Ich Ber ein Binliner (Tom D.), Thursday, 11 December 2008 15:18 (sixteen years ago)

walkers/lays originals are some watery weedy cheap bullshit, not even crisps imo

country matters, Thursday, 11 December 2008 15:19 (sixteen years ago)

Walkers Max C&O crisps are light years ahead of anything else on the market

Yentl vs Predator (blueski), Thursday, 11 December 2008 15:19 (sixteen years ago)

Brannigans are good if you can fuckin find 'em

Yentl vs Predator (blueski), Thursday, 11 December 2008 15:19 (sixteen years ago)

even quavers defeat walkers originals

even quavers

country matters, Thursday, 11 December 2008 15:20 (sixteen years ago)

this is the only crisps product where the 'beef' flavour actually works

The historical exception being KP beef flavour crisps from the early 80's. But Hula Hoops themselves are the snack of the gods. S&V probably my least favourite though, because that flavour - regardless of what reformed/sliced potato product it's applied to - just makes other stuff taste weird.

snoball, Thursday, 11 December 2008 15:21 (sixteen years ago)

Walkers Max = grim.
Sensations = the Thai one is good but this is unnecessary fannydangle really.

I'd be tempted to plump for Brannigans actually but they're sort of the Ocean Colour Scene of crisps and that's a bit offputting.

Matt DC, Thursday, 11 December 2008 15:21 (sixteen years ago)

Hula Hoops are so powdery. Too salty as well. 6/10

NickB, Thursday, 11 December 2008 15:22 (sixteen years ago)

anyway the elephant in the room is wheat crunchies

and kettle chips if you knocked about 60% off the price

country matters, Thursday, 11 December 2008 15:22 (sixteen years ago)

Also sticking the word 'Max' in front of the name went out of branding fashion in, what, 1995?

Matt DC, Thursday, 11 December 2008 15:22 (sixteen years ago)

Seabrooks are overrated, ignore any northerner you know.

Seanadams Molloy (The stickman from the hilarious 'xkcd' comics), Thursday, 11 December 2008 15:22 (sixteen years ago)

i went about 2-3 years without buying a packet of crisps anywhere (other than to share in the pub), then these upped their flavour game

http://tintrading.com/images/walkers/_Walkers%20Max%20Deep%20Ridge%20Potato%20Crisps%20Cheese%20and%20Onion.jpg

and i've been on about 5 a week for the last 18 months

Yentl vs Predator (blueski), Thursday, 11 December 2008 15:22 (sixteen years ago)

The OCS of crisps has the salt in a blue bag shurely?

The Biggest Event In The History Of Ethnic Comedy (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 11 December 2008 15:23 (sixteen years ago)

Nah that's the Paul Weller of crisps.

Matt DC, Thursday, 11 December 2008 15:23 (sixteen years ago)

bring back Frisps - is this a Facebook group yet or are they all still pissing about at Stansted?

Yentl vs Predator (blueski), Thursday, 11 December 2008 15:23 (sixteen years ago)

Eating McCoys is effort, and their S&V and C&O can clean drains, their so acidic. Walkers Max Paprika I remember being tasty tho.

All sensations except Sweet Chilli are nasty chemically things. They also suffer from being associated with dinner parties. cf the recommended wine on the back of the packets.

Brannigans Ham + Mustard blows your head off.

NotEnough, Thursday, 11 December 2008 15:24 (sixteen years ago)

Seabrooks are in that awkward 'simultaneously over- and underrated' niche

The Biggest Event In The History Of Ethnic Comedy (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 11 December 2008 15:24 (sixteen years ago)

Salt 'n' vinegar Squares are mad underrated as well. Possibly the greatest breakfast crisp.

Seanadams Molloy (The stickman from the hilarious 'xkcd' comics), Thursday, 11 December 2008 15:24 (sixteen years ago)

Ready salted Squares fucking rock actually.

Matt DC, Thursday, 11 December 2008 15:25 (sixteen years ago)

"Originally Smiths, now Walkers for no apparent reason other than it pleases the ego of some jumped up middle manager to be able to throw away a recognisable brand name"

snoball, Thursday, 11 December 2008 15:25 (sixteen years ago)

Frisps were thin and pointless. If I want ridged, I want think ridged, not any of this thin, healthy nonsense.

NotEnough, Thursday, 11 December 2008 15:25 (sixteen years ago)

Brannigans Ham + Mustard blows your head off.

isn't it Beef & Mustard and then Ham & Pickle. latter is def one of the best but so hard to come by.

Yentl vs Predator (blueski), Thursday, 11 December 2008 15:25 (sixteen years ago)

I have had a residual childhood dislike of cheese and onion flavour crisps since, er, childhood, but found myself eating C&O Squares a couple of days back and it was actually perfectly pleasant

The Biggest Event In The History Of Ethnic Comedy (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 11 December 2008 15:26 (sixteen years ago)

Bring back Tubes (basically Squares rolled into a cylinder), especially Mexican flavour.

snoball, Thursday, 11 December 2008 15:26 (sixteen years ago)

Tyrells are king, ban all this mainstream crap.

NickB, Thursday, 11 December 2008 15:26 (sixteen years ago)

Doritos can get tae fuck.

So can "Walkers Baked" as well, just like a stale bowl of crisps left over from the previous night's buffet.

Seanadams Molloy (The stickman from the hilarious 'xkcd' comics), Thursday, 11 December 2008 15:27 (sixteen years ago)

actually we all know what the real elephant in the room is

"...sour cream and chiiives"

country matters, Thursday, 11 December 2008 15:27 (sixteen years ago)

Walkers Baked = 9 in a pack if you're lucky

Yentl vs Predator (blueski), Thursday, 11 December 2008 15:27 (sixteen years ago)

also, poll.

country matters, Thursday, 11 December 2008 15:27 (sixteen years ago)

What, you only like indie crisps now?

xpost I might be thinking of Beef and Mustard, yeh.

NotEnough, Thursday, 11 December 2008 15:28 (sixteen years ago)

Doritos = like the cardboard from a dosser's bed

Ich Ber ein Binliner (Tom D.), Thursday, 11 December 2008 15:28 (sixteen years ago)

Would probably be better off picking 64 crisp varieties and doing a knock out tournament tbh.

Seanadams Molloy (The stickman from the hilarious 'xkcd' comics), Thursday, 11 December 2008 15:28 (sixteen years ago)

no meat flavoured crisps out there can Bacon Fries. it's a joke.

MATCH Bacon Fries

NickB, Thursday, 11 December 2008 15:29 (sixteen years ago)

Eating a Wotsit is a fairly unpleasant, and certainly a fairly odd, experience

Ich Ber ein Binliner (Tom D.), Thursday, 11 December 2008 15:30 (sixteen years ago)

wld rate bacon over scampi tho, just for the 'goes better with beer' factor

ledge, Thursday, 11 December 2008 16:14 (sixteen years ago)

Scampi crisps are horrible. Scampi Nik-Naks are grotesque and give you fish breath.

NotEnough, Thursday, 11 December 2008 16:19 (sixteen years ago)

scampi and lemon nik-naks are possibly even better than scampi fries.

At the risk of turning a few weakling stomachs, can I bring PORK FUCKING SCRATCHINGS into the debate?

chap, Thursday, 11 December 2008 16:43 (sixteen years ago)

FUCK YEAH

Although the giant soggy ones are slightly vile. Ditto the ones with hair on.

ledge, Thursday, 11 December 2008 16:47 (sixteen years ago)

Pork scratchings rule and all that but they have no place in this crisp debate.

Matt DC, Thursday, 11 December 2008 16:47 (sixteen years ago)

Pork scratchings - classic or dud?

Matt DC, Thursday, 11 December 2008 16:47 (sixteen years ago)

Scampi and bacon fries aren't strictly crisps either. I lump them in the misc. pub snack category.

chap, Thursday, 11 December 2008 16:48 (sixteen years ago)

Hula Hoops ain't crisps they're a reformed potato snack.

ledge, Thursday, 11 December 2008 16:49 (sixteen years ago)

A potato snack that's found Jesus?

chap, Thursday, 11 December 2008 16:50 (sixteen years ago)

not as good as finding Jesus in your potato snack

Am thinking this should happen. Think 64 may be too many, mind.

Still - all in favour of a separate nominations thread?

Dara O'Briain goes on about Tayto crisps on his latest DVD. With hilarious results.
That's just for all the many Irisher Tayto fanatics out there.

Surprised to hear '90s crisp Branigans are still going. They've become extinct in the Midlands.

Co-Op cheese & onion are great, and so cheap. Also like Roasted Onion and Balsamic Vinegar Sensations as well, but the only place that does them round me is this one off license that's bloody miles away.

DavidM, Friday, 12 December 2008 15:23 (sixteen years ago)

Oh, and Tesco Value Potato Snacks are fantastic munch. Something like 40p for 12 packs. You get not-Wotsits, not-Onion-Rings and not-Fries. I mean, they're nasty, but perfect munch for a festival campfire at 2 in the morning.

NotEnough, Friday, 12 December 2008 15:35 (sixteen years ago)

Think 64 may be too many, mind.

Think Dom was remembering/referring to Loaded doing this 'knockout tournament' thing in one issue a thousand years ago FYI

Did they? Christ, James Brown isn't dead.

Seanadams Molloy (The stickman from the hilarious 'xkcd' comics), Friday, 12 December 2008 15:42 (sixteen years ago)

There was Taytos (ROI) vs Taytos (NI) debate on some other crisp thread. I came back from Donegal via Belfast with luggage stuffed with both varieties for comparative purposes, but as I returned at a time when all the Irish people seemed to have disappeared off ILX and at any rate I preferred the NI ones it didn't seem worth digging the thread up for.

(However, in the interests of being fair and balanced across any sectarian divides, Irish Dairy Milk really is nicer than the Bourneville factory. Creamier)
