This is such a basic question that there is a thread on it all the way back from 2001, but that was before there was such a thing as POLL.

So,

My shot glass is empty.

NewBeefLover, Thursday, 11 December 2008 21:50 (seventeen years ago)

I have a 3/4 full glass nearby, and all it does is MOCK me with its immanent halfemptiness.

(NB this is of course not necessarily about glasses and their contents, just how your head treats applicable situations or yeah you know)

Imminent! Not immanent!

I cut myself open with it and am pouring the booze inside

In Finnish the most common expression is "in half" (like, "My glass is in half"), so stating that 50% of your beverage is gone doesn't need to have any philosophical implications.

Your own land is the strawberry, another land is the blueberry.

Hm. But how do you think about it? "Oh no nearly nothing left!" or "yay much more to have!"?

Again, not primarily a drink question, honest... If you're on a week-long vacation, what's your feelings, say, Thursday morning?

anatol_merklich, Thursday, 11 December 2008 21:58 (seventeen years ago)

If I'm halfway done filling a glass, it's half full, if I'm halfway done emptying a glass, it's half empty. This isn't complicated.

anatol_merklich, Thursday, 11 December 2008 22:06 (seventeen years ago)

Also depends how much you're enjoying it: a cold ale on a sunny day, or aspirin dissolved in water?

paulhw, Thursday, 11 December 2008 22:09 (seventeen years ago)

But but both are lovely! I do not understand.

"An optimist sees half a pint of milk. He says 'It is half full'. A pessimist sees half a pint of milk. He says "It is half empty". I see half a pint of milk, I say 'It is sour'."

five years pass...

I've tried to overcome my negative attitude toward everything, but you know, it just is what it is, I think.

Today, I described a successful project I had taken a lead on as having gone over like "a game of Jenga in reverse."

Manager looked at me for a second and then said, "Sooo, you were able to put the pieces in place and leave it standing on its own?"

"Yeah, that's another way you could say it, I guess."

I mean, good lord, there's definitely a good reason why I'm not in sales.

mookieproof, Thursday, 13 November 2014 04:44 (eleven years ago)

Oh, our night out without the kids went great, like the JFK assassination in reverse - kept the top up, took it easy, didn't get shot, and nothing got spilled on my wife's dress for once.
