was typing and typed "imply" and then thought would be good if this thing I was typing about eventually didn't just imply something but...

that's right - what is the explicit version of "imply"? googled this conundrum and found people following the same "logic" and coming to the same "conclusion"

maybe it is time for: EXPLY

are we saying "exply" is not a new word, shamwow 69?

conrad, Saturday, 13 December 2008 03:59 (sixteen years ago)

I think the word you're looking for is "say"?

I do not think so

explicate?

A implies B if and only if "if A then B" is a logical (or perhaps necessary) truth.

This really has nothing to do with implicit/explicit.

TEENAGE DIALECTICS (libcrypt), Saturday, 13 December 2008 04:16 (sixteen years ago)

explicate has implicate. why must imply be so lonely?

conrad, Saturday, 13 December 2008 04:28 (sixteen years ago)

Imply comes from Latin "implicare"; the word from "explicare" is, as you note, "explicate".

Casuistry, Saturday, 13 December 2008 04:33 (sixteen years ago)

there is no option other than exply which is now a new word even if it doesn't sound like it and no one will use it

A explies B if and only if ___________.

Pls fill in the blank with a (logical) formula in terms of A and B.

TEENAGE DIALECTICS (libcrypt), Saturday, 13 December 2008 04:45 (sixteen years ago)

A is B

conrad, Saturday, 13 December 2008 04:48 (sixteen years ago)

There is already a convenient symbol for that it is shown as thus: =
