Not on youtube yet, but highly amusing, although I worry for the guy who did it.

BAGHDAD (AFP) — An Iraqi journalist hurled his shoes and an insult at George W. Bush, without hitting him, as the US president was shaking hands with the Iraqi premier at his Baghdad office on Sunday.

As the two leaders met in Nuri al-Maliki's private office, a journalist sitting in the third row jumped up, shouting: "It is the farewell kiss, you dog," and threw his shoes one after the other towards Bush.

Bush ducked both throws. Neither leader was hit. In Iraqi culture, throwing shoes at someone is a sign of contempt; Iraqis whacked a statue of Saddam Hussein with their shoes after U.S. marines toppled it to the ground after the 2003 invasion.

"All I can report," Bush joked of the incident, "is a size 10."

Islamic worshippers remove their shoes before entering a mosque. It seems reasonable to assume that shoes have a connotation of uncleanliness and 'pollution'. Which might make this action a rough equivalent of throwing rotten eggs or a dead cat at Bush.

Shoe-Hurling Iraqi Becomes a Folk Hero

By TIMOTHY WILLIAMS and SHARON OTTERMAN
Published: December 15, 2008

BAGHDAD — A day after an Iraqi television journalist threw his shoes at President Bush at a news conference in Baghdad on Sunday, his act of defiance toward the American commander-in-chief reverberated throughout Iraq and across the Arab world.

In Sadr City, the sprawling Baghdad suburb that has seen some of the most intense fighting between insurgents and American soldiers since the 2003 invasion, thousands of people marched in his defense. In Syria, he was hailed as a hero. In Libya, he was given an award for courage.

Across much of the Arab world on Monday, the shoe-throwing incident generated front page headlines and continuing television news coverage. A thinly veiled glee could be discerned in much of the reporting, especially in the places where anti-American sentiment runs deepest.

Muntader al-Zaidi, 29, the correspondent for an independent Iraqi television station who threw his black dress shoes at President Bush, remained in Iraqi custody on Monday.

While he has not been formally charged, Iraqi officials said he faces up to seven years in prison for committing an act of aggression against a visiting head of state...

Of course, if any American tried the same thing, the penalty would be severe, since attacking the imperial manager is a serious felony. Not to worry. American journos, especially those covering the White House, are too well conditioned to ever make an al-Zaidi move. Their job is to kiss and polish the president's shoes, not throw their own.
...Meanwhile, American liberals are enjoying a mighty laugh over the shoe toss. Were the same to happen to Obama, libs would be the first to scream foul, angered by the lack of foreign respect for the Leader of The Free World, especially from ungrateful Iraqis, who don't have the decency to finance their own submission, as Obama repeatedly points out.

At M.T.A. Hearing, Another Shoe Almost Dropped
By William Neuman

One transit rider was so infuriated on Wednesday by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s decision to slash service and raise fares that he tried to follow the example set by Muntader al-Zaidi, the 29-year-old Iraqi journalist who hurled two shoes at President Bush on Sunday.

The rider, Stephen A. Millies, who identified himself as an Amtrak worker with the Bail Out the People campaign, spoke out against the budget plan, saying it should be “thrown into the garbage plan.” He asked: “Where is Elliot Sander? You made $300,000 last year!”

Saying “this shoe is for you,” Mr. Millies bent over to take off his shoe — apparently in an effort to take off the shoe and, presumably, throw it at Mr. Sander, chief executive of the authority.

Police officers surrounded him and led him away in handcuffs. Mr. Millies, 54, of Jackson Heights, Queens, was later given a summons for disorderly conduct and then released, according to the M.T.A. Police Department.

The shoe was a size 10½ Red Wing, the police said.
