Firefox for me, I like the scroll wheel tap to open new tab. Chrome also seems a bit juddery which is a minor but fairly common irritant.

hyggeligt, Tuesday, 16 December 2008 10:43 (seventeen years ago)

Chrome, latest version is really nippy, I prefer their bar to the awesome bar, nice lightweight interface.

Ed, Tuesday, 16 December 2008 10:43 (seventeen years ago)

Chrome, but I still use Firefox too for the Down Them All extension.

Enrique (Raw Patrick), Tuesday, 16 December 2008 10:44 (seventeen years ago)

Chrome is great. Loads helluva lot quicker on my machine. It's got less clutter on the screen and seems their bookmark bar is handier, somehow.

NotEnough, Tuesday, 16 December 2008 10:45 (seventeen years ago)

Yep, Chrome for me. would like to see a proper version for linux though.

i am v much enjoying Chrome

flavors of funyun (Roberto Spiralli), Tuesday, 16 December 2008 12:19 (seventeen years ago)

I find that gifs slow down in Chrome. They start at a normal speed then it's just frame-pause-frame-pause-frame. Weirdly enough that happens each time it loops.

Also a lot of pictures come up as broken links first time I open threads. I always need to reload then they work fine.

hyggeligt, Tuesday, 16 December 2008 12:45 (seventeen years ago)

^^That's my only complaint so far with Chrome. I haven't used it much, but apart from that it's been excellent. The unclutteryness seconded (or thirded or...you know whatever)

that karate douche (╓abies), Tuesday, 16 December 2008 14:02 (seventeen years ago)

yes, Chrome - uncluttered (as mentioned above), attractive and kind of fun.

Daniel Giraffe, Tuesday, 16 December 2008 14:08 (seventeen years ago)

firefox - chrome is never going to get a ad blocker

zappi, Tuesday, 16 December 2008 14:13 (seventeen years ago)

I have given up on ad blocking. When I had a shitting half meg connection and slow browser rendering then it was worth it, now I can't be arsed and besides, most of the websites I read I'd like them to stay in business.

Ed, Tuesday, 16 December 2008 14:15 (seventeen years ago)

I don't go in for generalised ad-blocking but I couldn't live without the ad blocker blocking the banner ads at the side of my 'My eBay' page. The ads always involve animation of some kind and I find the movement genuinely distracting, even disquieting, when I see it from the corner of my eye as I try to read the text in the middle of the page.

I draw the line at flash. Flash ads are absolutely vile, not to mention potentially insecure.

Going FFX here because Mac Chrome still doesn't exist.

NB: Privoxy works with any web browser and does a good, but not 100% perfect, job at blocking ads.

TEENAGE DIALECTICS (libcrypt), Wednesday, 17 December 2008 00:13 (seventeen years ago)

would be Chrome if only i could run the same FF extensions, greasemonkey etc.

Timezilla vs Mechadistance (blueski), Wednesday, 17 December 2008 00:58 (seventeen years ago)

FF, Chrome doesn't have any of the extensions that I like to use.

Tracy Michael Jordan Catalano (Jordan), Wednesday, 17 December 2008 01:02 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, it seems so cheesy.

Nicolars (Nicole), Wednesday, 17 December 2008 01:05 (seventeen years ago)

Chrome's about to get extensions, including Ad Blocking.

I use it on PC because of the speed, which is something else.

stet, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 01:05 (seventeen years ago)

really? why would google allow ad blocking on their browser?

zappi, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 01:18 (seventeen years ago)

no linux port = no utility

From North to Ibiza (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 17 December 2008 01:24 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah I'm surprised by the Chrome love. Firefox is so great because of its customizability. Obviously, Chrome doesn't have all these features and that's why it's so light but Firefox is a lot quicker than it used to be anyway right...

sam500, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 01:34 (seventeen years ago)

is chrome stable yet?

o_O (ken c), Wednesday, 17 December 2008 01:48 (seventeen years ago)

read somewhere that ffx 3.1 is supposed to be essentially as fast as chrome

mookieproof, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 01:57 (seventeen years ago)

in a specific javascript comparison, I think it is. But Chrome smokes it at launch time (it's essentially instant on my crapo PC) and rendering big pages of straight html. Also one tab doesn't hang the others.

zappi: beats me. But they even list it as an example: http://dev.chromium.org/developers/design-documents/extensions

stet, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 02:05 (seventeen years ago)

chrome was fast when i had it but it made flash pause for about a second whenever i pressed the ctrl key. which kind of made things slower

o_O (ken c), Wednesday, 17 December 2008 02:17 (seventeen years ago)

or the times when it quits itself. also slow things down a tad

o_O (ken c), Wednesday, 17 December 2008 02:18 (seventeen years ago)

incognito mode i liked though. good for redtube

o_O (ken c), Wednesday, 17 December 2008 02:18 (seventeen years ago)

i've really liked chrome since I've had it. I like the google search in the toolbar, I've found those 9 windows in the middle helpful and I haven't once felt tempted to weigh my browser down with some crazy add-on.

LOL at Googles explanation for 'Incognito Mode'

"For times when you want to browse in stealth mode, for example, to plan surprises such as gifts or birthdays, Google Chrome offers the incognito browsing mode. "

sam500, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 05:47 (seventeen years ago)

since i started using chrome it drives me mad that you can't search from the address bar in firefox

Suggesteban Buttez (jabba hands), Wednesday, 17 December 2008 06:20 (seventeen years ago)

Actually, I have to say, the ability to create stand alone application shortcuts in Chrome is pretty neat. Having a Yahoo shortcut on my desktop that instantly opens my mail is v. nice

sam500, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 06:26 (seventeen years ago)

isn't there another browser where they straight up call it "porn mode"? i appreciate that kind of candor

miss precious perfect (musically), Wednesday, 17 December 2008 06:48 (seventeen years ago)

I only used incognito mode for porn for a while, imagining no other uses, but it is actually also handy for quickly seeing what a page on a website would look like if you were logged out, or for clicking on a page without the site recognising that you did so (e.g. on ILX looking at a thread without changing the new answer thing) which is more helpful than you'd think.

> I find that gifs slow down in Chrome

the animated icons they used for the throbber in linux firefox often caused an otherwise idle machine to clock up 25% cpu usage. luckily it's only a css change to remove them (or replace them with little rotating foxes like i did)

as for supporting adblock - a lot of people specifically don't block google ads because they aren't obtrusive and are well targeted. it's the flashing, monkey-punching adverts that everyone objects to.

By definition.

w/ the searching: yeah it seems to either take you to a page, or to search google? i'm not sure how it decides which is the best option.

t_g, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 20:36 (seventeen years ago)

right-click in the search engine textbox. choose 'Add a Keyword for this Search'. type in a name (eg 'Google'), a keyword (eg 'g'), and click 'Add'. thereafter if you type 'g [search term]' in firefox's address bar it will search google for that term

W i l l, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 20:49 (seventeen years ago)

if you straight up type a non-url into the address bar i believe it takes you directly to the first result google returns

W i l l, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 20:50 (seventeen years ago)

you can change that in about:config -- search for keyword.url and change it to not be the I'm Feeling Lucky one.

assuming it's the same in linux firefox as windows, go to view > toolbars > customize and drag the throbber/'activity indicator' off the toolbar to the customize toolbar box

I actually want to know for Linux. Thanks so much.

From North to Ibiza (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 17 December 2008 22:41 (seventeen years ago)

Sometimes the Flash plugin will swamp my CPU on Firefox. I have to go by trial and error and close FF windows until the offending page dies. I've had this happen occasionally on Chrome also, but at least on Chrome it's easier to kill the individual process that's causing the problem and leave everything else running.

not that i'm complaining

J0rdan S., Saturday, 14 May 2011 03:59 (fourteen years ago)

firefox was giving me huge problems (like, seizing up my mac completely, crashing finder, etc) after the last update until I uninstalled flash, uninstalled firefox, and then installed them both back fresh.

akm, Saturday, 14 May 2011 15:22 (fourteen years ago)

El Tomboto, Saturday, 14 May 2011 15:40 (fourteen years ago)

worst thing now is that ff4 for mac doesn't have a plugin to view pdfs, so my desktop fills up with pdfs that i looked at for 30 seconds and never need to see again. really just seems like the most basic functionality.

Why do people have problems with a browser that looks pretty? I like the customization options in Chrome, and it also has the instant translation. I think Firefox needs a serious makeover.

jay lenonononono (abanana), Sunday, 15 May 2011 23:11 (fourteen years ago)

I think you should get a prompt asking 'save?/open in browser?', or be able to set an automatic default. In chrome, pdf-in-browser is either switched on or off. But whether it's appropriate often depends on the particular file.

Vivaldi - the new web browser for power users
https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2016/apr/06/vivaldi-the-new-web-browser-for-power-users

Vivaldi has launched a new web browser that is different enough to have a chance of success. Rather than targeting the mass market with a simplified browser, Vivaldi is trying to deliver more power to the people who live and work on the web, whether they use Windows, Mac OS X or Linux. ...

In other words, Vivaldi is a browser for “power users”, geeks and techno-freaks, though there’s nothing to stop anybody else from using it. In its standard configuration, it’s a straightforward replacement for Google’s Chrome. Although Vivaldi’s interface is new, the engine underneath is open source Chromium – the same code that powers Google’s browser.

stet, Wednesday, 27 September 2017 10:58 (eight years ago)

I was asked to run some stats on which browsers our users were using recently and was surprised to find that Firefox was less popular than IE and Safari! Chrome was by far the most popular. There was 1 Opera user lol. This might be distorted by most of our clients being office-based and maybe there's company policies in place that don't allow people to install their browser of choice.

On a related note, I thought I'd try MS Edge just to see what it's like, and wow it just doesn't work at all! I had to enter the URL 5 times before it would even load a page, just kept blanking out the URL bar a few seconds after I typed it, then when the page did load, it was Not Responding, and I couldn't type in any text inputs. What a pile of shit. Not that I'm particularly surprised.
