Blackburn? Burnley? Bradford? Oldham? Darwen?

Let's solve this crucial debate once and for all here.

I mean, the city is actually called "Black, burn".

I imagine somewhere like the South West, or in the Home Counties

whitehaven

I know the big BNP stronghold was some town in Yorkshire but you don't have to be in the BNP to be racist

Vicious Cop Kills Gentle Fool (Tom D.), Tuesday, 16 December 2008 14:02 (seventeen years ago)

no, it is Blackburn. if you haven't spent a significant amount of time there you will have to trust me on this. Blackburn makes apartheid South Africa look like that Star Trek episode where Kirk and Uhura kiss.

Mark G, Tuesday, 16 December 2008 14:06 (seventeen years ago)

I'd have thought % of people with racist views would be about the same in all UK towns?

tomofthenest, Tuesday, 16 December 2008 14:08 (seventeen years ago)

also, there is the argument that everybody is prejudiced to some extent.

tomofthenest, Tuesday, 16 December 2008 14:10 (seventeen years ago)

will vary by:

levels of poverty
% of ethnic population
% of brainless, shellsuit wearing cunts

Easy to get away with it, of course, if you live in all-white homogeneous communities

Vicious Cop Kills Gentle Fool (Tom D.), Tuesday, 16 December 2008 14:13 (seventeen years ago)

"also, there is the argument that everybody is prejudiced to some extent."

let's have a heated debate!

The shopkeepers of Withernsea seemed to be very into Golliwogs as a window display motif this summer.

Tony Woodcockfarmer (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 16 December 2008 14:21 (seventeen years ago)

I'm guessing there are places in Devon with "Don't Let the Sun Set on 'ou 'ere boy" signs under the speed cameras.

Tony Woodcockfarmer (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 16 December 2008 14:23 (seventeen years ago)

and yet it's london that has the bnp politicians holding office...

I take it all back, there is a winner. WTF did you go to With for anyway?

tomofthenest, Tuesday, 16 December 2008 14:25 (seventeen years ago)

I was working. Seriously half the shops had them in the window, like it was a deliberate provocation or something.

Tony Woodcockfarmer (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 16 December 2008 14:27 (seventeen years ago)

OTM, I recall a lot of overt racism growing up in Cornwall but basically no-one to direct it at aside from people's equally white cohorts

We saw some in Paignton not long ago. I'm sure they can still be found in many seaside town shops, probably under more or less the same reasoning several people used on the ronaldinho bottle opener thread.

Timezilla vs Mechadistance (blueski), Tuesday, 16 December 2008 18:34 (seventeen years ago)

there's a golliwog in the window of a shop in the Tron gate in Glasgow.

what U cry 4 (jim), Tuesday, 16 December 2008 18:41 (seventeen years ago)

has been there for as long as I can remember.

what U cry 4 (jim), Tuesday, 16 December 2008 18:41 (seventeen years ago)

also the shop is called ATM Discount. Which is funny.

what U cry 4 (jim), Tuesday, 16 December 2008 18:42 (seventeen years ago)

Any ATP goers can probably testify to the proliferation of golliwogs in Minehead shops, also one of those grab-a-cuddly-toy machines full of golliwogs and cuddly rastafarians.

ailsa, Tuesday, 16 December 2008 20:04 (seventeen years ago)

What's that place that got its own documentary?

From North to Ibiza (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 16 December 2008 20:21 (seventeen years ago)

Finton-on-Sea or something?

From North to Ibiza (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 16 December 2008 20:21 (seventeen years ago)

There was some research years ago that had Norwich as the most racist city.

Alba, Tuesday, 16 December 2008 21:01 (seventeen years ago)

I always assumed "golliwog" was Britisher for tadpole.

Suggest Ban Permalink (contenderizer), Tuesday, 16 December 2008 21:03 (seventeen years ago)

As someone born and raised in Whitehaven, I have to ask what's so racist about it nowdays to make it moreso than other places?

I wouldn't be surprised that it is, by the way.

Peteski, Tuesday, 16 December 2008 21:27 (seventeen years ago)

twas a joke. white haven, geddit?

tomofthenest, Tuesday, 16 December 2008 21:29 (seventeen years ago)

contenderizers, that is a pollywog. which you've now made me think about for the first time ever.

ailsa, Tuesday, 16 December 2008 21:31 (seventeen years ago)

(er, sorry for pluralising you)

ailsa, Tuesday, 16 December 2008 21:32 (seventeen years ago)

Damn! I always thought pollywog was a foreigner who could speak many languages

tron, Tuesday, 16 December 2008 23:03 (seventeen years ago)

I stayed in a shitty midlands town called Rugely and the casual racism was really suprising. I mean nothing *nasty*, just assumed crap like "blah blah Paki shopkeepers are all ripoff merchants" and the guy I was dating telling me not to get my wallet out in public in Birmingham because "look at those 2 guys over there" pointing to 2 black men in business suits. I mean jesus.

And KappaSlappa chavs crawling all over alton towers. Ugh.

Trayce, Tuesday, 16 December 2008 23:12 (seventeen years ago)

I didn't even know Kappa jackets were an asshole thing in England until recently. I think they look cool, and I've always kind of wanted one, but now I'm iffy about t because of connotations in a country that is thousands of miles away.

Abbott of the Trapezoid Monks (Abbott), Tuesday, 16 December 2008 23:14 (seventeen years ago)

Even in Australia they tend to be worn by bogans and numbnut guys trying to look like eminem or wtf ever.

Trayce, Tuesday, 16 December 2008 23:15 (seventeen years ago)

Oldham has no go areas for white people, i'd say that's pretty racist

not_goodwin, Tuesday, 16 December 2008 23:16 (seventeen years ago)

xp stay away from kappa

From North to Ibiza (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 16 December 2008 23:17 (seventeen years ago)

warwick or otherwise

From North to Ibiza (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 16 December 2008 23:18 (seventeen years ago)

Abbott could reclaim Kappa for all of us

Timezilla vs Mechadistance (blueski), Tuesday, 16 December 2008 23:30 (seventeen years ago)

They're worn by like the occasional tennis player in the (western) U.S., if you see them at all.

Abbott of the Trapezoid Monks (Abbott), Tuesday, 16 December 2008 23:31 (seventeen years ago)

Warwick is not the most racist town.

Holden McGroin (Ned Trifle II), Tuesday, 16 December 2008 23:35 (seventeen years ago)

Warwick has a nice castle...

Trayce, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 00:13 (seventeen years ago)

Not goodwin is really not good.

Venga, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 00:46 (seventeen years ago)

essential thread. vote keighley for high profile nick griffin speech and the meeting of the sheltered backwater mentality&an actual south asian community. go for kappa abbott you can make it work.

ogmor, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 02:08 (seventeen years ago)

Warwick Castle is nice but overpriced. The best view of it can be had by visiting the Mill Garden at the end of Mill Street. Admission for a couple of pounds. The best castle is Kenilworth just a few miles away but a lot cheaper.

Signed.

Your guide to central England.

Holden McGroin (Ned Trifle II), Wednesday, 17 December 2008 08:25 (seventeen years ago)

i was referring to this warwick

From North to Ibiza (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 17 December 2008 08:27 (seventeen years ago)

And I was joking. 'Cos you know Warwick is also a town and...oh never mind...

I'm tempted to go with Melton Mowbray here.

Holden McGroin (Ned Trifle II), Wednesday, 17 December 2008 08:29 (seventeen years ago)

Surely there's an ilx catalogue thread for posts where you think people are serious when they're not.

From North to Ibiza (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 17 December 2008 08:34 (seventeen years ago)

a nice "hate racism, hate working-class" thing going on in this thread: "chavs crawling all over alton towers" ???

Rugeley with an e where I grew up as you might recall hoho. Seriously it wasn't particularly bad when I was a kid. It's in the Midlands after all.

Tony Woodcockfarmer (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 17 December 2008 09:01 (seventeen years ago)

(xxpost) Being a chav is nothing to do with being working class.

snoball, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 09:14 (seventeen years ago)

Strange that it always always gets used about working class people then.
