At the start of July. What should I do there?

N., Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Go to 10000 bad indie pop gigs

RickyT, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Get the first available train to Edinburgh, it's much nicer here.

Leigh, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

what have i missed on other threads? in other words: explain yourself.

Alan Trewartha, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

what rickyT said!

hahah larffing my ass off, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Time to get into happy hardcore.

Tom, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think Mr D would suit a nice pair of white gloves, don't you?

Yeah man, rave on, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Feel the vibe.

Emma, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am going to Scotland next summer so you can't move there, you're just trying to ruin it for me.

Nicole, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Who will you support Rangers or Celtic?

jel --, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

*desperately tries to think of Dan Perry-esque witticism about "mate me" typo(?)*

katie, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Partick, obv.

N., Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Katie that wasn't a typo. He is leaving his wife and two kids behind to subsist on gutter water and pigeons caught by foxes.

Pete, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Gutter water is all part of the raving on and feeling the vibe.

Ronan, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Become adept at ignoring Art Nouveau roses fucking everywhere.

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

And those doves are the shit.

RickyT, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No one seems to be very positive about this important move.

N., Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

they leave London = they are monkeys

RickyT, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i'd be positive about it if I knew what it was about. what have i missed?

Alan Trewartha, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Um, that wasn't serious, I just couldn't resist it. I am curious about the attraction of Glasgow tho. You're not the first person to have abandoned London for Lanark of late.

RickyT, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

We cannot tell you why we are all moving there. Sorry, but you'd understand if you knew (which you can't).

N., Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Is not because you all want to shag Ally C is it?

RickyT, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

N., Glasgow is great. Beautiful apartments, good places to drink, the CCA, lovely Scots people. Is new job better than current one?

suzy, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My sister lives in Glasgow, be sure and say hello.

Ronan, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ha ha, he'd be a bit of an idiot to move all the way to Glasgow for a worse job than his current one.

Emma, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

oo, is this the new top-secret guardian thingy that my ex can't tell me about either!

Alan Trewartha, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That's not quite what I meant, Emma. Could be better paid with less immediate kudos, could be worse pay but cost of living cheaper yet OK because close friends are nearby. In fact could be whole point of move, missing pals.

suzy, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Both times I've been to Glasgow were very enjoyable; it's a great city to walk around in. That said, Nick must heed Nicole's words and flee her approach, lest she smite him.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm just moving there on a whim.

N., Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd take the train if I were you. Whim's are even less reliable than Vrigin - and prone to changing direction at will.

Pete, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The job is slightly worse paid, with slightly less kudos maybe. I think Emma maybe knew this and she was being nasty.

N., Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

[the last time I moved jobs I took a pay cut too. I will be earning £4000 less than I earned in 1998. Bling blong].

N., Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think you should mail me stuff from Glasgow since I've never been there.

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

How could I know this! I am not stalking you Nick. However since I have inadvertently been nasty I do not have to apologise.

Emma, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Emma states her case on reparations quite eloquently.

Of course it pays less. No Glasgow Weighting is there. And you could buy a house there.

Still leaving London = they are monkeys.

Pete, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

momus to thread!

mark s, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

(BTW, I meant to say earlier that I am inordinately excited that my name has been incontrovertibly-linked with making crude preverted jokes. That $100K education was good for something after all!)

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

(do not read this if you mate me)

Is N. playing chess on a UK sized board? Or is he just going to Glasgow to mate?

I'm jealous (maybe its easier for such a provincial bumpkin as me) - beautiful city (at least in parts), lots going on, several lovely people I am very fond of, some excellent clubs, at least 4 indie acts I like, lower cost of living, ridiculously cheap booze, just for starters.

Oh, and Nick, I'll miss you when you've gone.

David, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I lived in Glasgow for a year Nick. The west-end, for all its pretentions, is the more attractive part of the city, though the South Side has its charms. The council estates in the North, espec Possil Park, and Springburn (where I social worked for my sins) are decidedly rough. Whoever placed hundreds of assylum seekers in Sighthill must have a very sick sense of humour.

The locals are generally warm and friendly, like a drink, and eat too much fried food (heart attack capital of the UK). There is a chronic heroin + tamazapam 'jellies' problem. Only a couple of times did I ever get hassle for being English.

The Glasgow Film Theatre is worth a visit, there was a thriving theatre scene, and the Royal College of Music + Drama had free lunchtime recitals. Check out the St Mungos museum on religion (next to the Cathedral) and the amazing acropolis graveyard behind it. The view from Queens Park (near where I lived in Govanhill) is also fabulous on a clear winter's day.

Avoid the old firm and the adjacent bigotry (theres still a lot of that just under the surface in the west of Scotland), Partick Thistle won me over, and then there's Queen's Park - an amateur club in the Scottish League who play before a few hundred people in the bizarre setting of Hampden Stadium.

As it was my last residence in the UK I get to vote there and have Mohammed Sawar as my MP. A lively, vibrant city with a big heart, I really enjoyed my time there. Hope you do too.

stevo, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually, Glasgow struck me as being alright. Edinburgh, on the other hand, whilst undoubtedly prettier, is wall to wall nutters

Matt Fallaize, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Maryhill has a mall you can smoke in. I know this because I got stuck there for an hour waiting for a friend to return home and there was nothing to do but smoke and scour the now-vanished supermarket for weird foodstuffs with which to wow my family back home.

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Watch out for 'neds,' they're the ones who drive zippy souped up honda civics w/ 'fat' mufflers and japanese racing components stickers all over the windows. Attire is standard adidas tracksuit, adidias shoes, baseball cap optional. They will be 'bumping' (or whatever they call it over there, perhaps 'boshing') annoying trance or happy hardcore from their car stereo. Usual hangouts are in the east end, but after their football club of choice has won (or lost) a game they sometimes descend on the Saucihall/Buchanan st. area, extrememly drunk by this point of course.

the east end is totally cool, try to get an apt. over there if you can 'cause they are all made out of pink limestone, some over 3/ 400 yrs/ old (refurbished of course) and there's some cute little pubs/ restaurants and a moovy theatre in the maze of cute little alleys off the top of Byres' road.

The Glasgow School of Art, up from Saucihall St. in the Garnethill area, has a nice, but trashy, pub called the vic. I went there all the time because it was right across the st, also has a distinctly 'american' vibe. Also worth chekin' out is the Trongate area (full of coffehouses, comix shops, rekkidz stores, vintage clothing shopping etc..) that's sort of down past Argyle St.

Enjoy Glasgow, it's nice enough, probly more nice in summer, which is when you'll be there.

turner, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Buy an umbrella - it took me a year after leaving Glasgow to realise that most places in the UK it doesn't actually rain every day and I didn't have to always carry an umbrella. *Every day*. Not all day, not necessarily for long, but without fail. Glasgow is great, but Edinburgh is nice too..

Linda, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Watch out for 'neds,'

Always good advice.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Linda, every time I come to see you in Edinburgh I almost freeze to death! Glasgow may rain but at least it's warmer.

Oh, and RickyT is right! N. is coming to Glasgow because he loves me. How I've dreamed etc...

Ally C, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I lived there for 6 mths a long time ago, and still have friends there. I'd go back like a shot. Walk around and look at buildings. Read about architecture. Look out for the shock of the sea at Berwick if you go up the E Coast mainline.

Ellie, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

N, my sis has lived & worked in Glasgow for a few years, and she loves it there. It is a TOP city of art & kultur, if U give a shit abt any ov that, I dunno. You will certainly find that yer pay cut will actually = a pay rise in actual cost-of-living terms

Norman Phay, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That's what I figure. Oh, everything is right with the world.

N., Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Attire is standard adidas tracksuit, adidias shoes, baseball cap optional

Baseball cap is definitely not optional on the native ned. It should be worn at all times preferably on shaved head/bleached hair.

mms, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ha ha. Another one for the London exodus. It *is* all because we love Ally C.

alix, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Glasgow suddenly became 10,000 times more attractive!

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 13:34 (twenty-two years ago)

haha.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 13:38 (twenty-two years ago)

''and if there is an interesting event but maybe something less overcrowded than the Edinburgh festival.''

has anyone gone to the festival? what is it like?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 13:54 (twenty-two years ago)

less neds

There can never be enough Neds.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 14:00 (twenty-two years ago)

true dat

Thanks, everyone. N. come home!

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 14:05 (twenty-two years ago)

http://www.darkhorizons.com/news03/p-ned.jpg

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 14:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Which festival? There are at least 5, all at roughly the same time.

caitlin (caitlin), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 14:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Pete, you have made my year.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 14:13 (twenty-two years ago)

The Edinburgh festival is great. If it was held in Glasgow it would be looted every year by neds. You should definately go to the festival at least once in your lifetime.

Calum, Wednesday, 30 April 2003 14:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I will definately not go now.

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 14:18 (twenty-two years ago)

you've definately made the right choice.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

The prospect of a city teeming with semen stained Suede fanatics does not appeal. I was already iffy on the Edinburgh festival to begin with.

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 14:21 (twenty-two years ago)

wise choice nicole!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

The prospect of a city teeming with semen stained Suede fanatics does not appeal.

"Semen stained Suede solipsists" works better.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

whatever gets you off, ned.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 14:25 (twenty-two years ago)

You cad!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

don't bring me in on your sordid fantasies! please.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 14:27 (twenty-two years ago)

That picture will be photoshopped by the end of this day!

Is that Jamie Theakston with the gerbil?

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I doubt it. Its yet another Australian trying to make funny about Ned Kelly (as if Reckless Kelly wasn't enough). The gerbil is cute though.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

And Glasgow at new year is cold and shit. Really, if you throw Edinburgh for Glasgow it's your loss. I've only ever met one person who likes Glasgow better (and he's a weejie).

Calum, Wednesday, 30 April 2003 15:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Edinburgh is cold and wet at new year. Glasgow is cold and wet at new year. Whether either of them are shit depends on you and your ability to have fun.

caitlin (caitlin), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 15:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Thank you, Calum, but I've already been to Edinburgh.

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 15:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Come to Glasgow Nicole!!!

Cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 16:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I am thinking about it for next year, this year is not looking good at all.

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Not that I've been to Edinburgh, but Glasgow is a great city.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd much rather Felicity visited London again, but Glasgow does have some terrific buildings - the old art school particularly, of course. I've only been once, so can't say anything useful about seasonal things.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 18:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Martin, you don't have to choose. Nicole can visit Glasgow and I can also visit London.

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 18:06 (twenty-two years ago)

You must go to Aberdeen.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 18:13 (twenty-two years ago)

As long as you spend some time here in London, I will not try to prevent you* from visiting Glasgow too. I really want to meet Nicole too, so ditto.

* It is not entirely clear what the fuck form this was supposed to take.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 18:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I might go to Glasgow one day! It'd be an adventure to leave London for a bit.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 19:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Both of you come to Glasgow, I will buy you both one pint each because I am poor. This is an offer!

Cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 19:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I bid two pints! (This is an interesting development, I think...)

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 20:30 (twenty-two years ago)

two years pass...

He's still here, you know.

Ally C (Ally C), Monday, 24 April 2006 21:08 (nineteen years ago)

Sounds like Poltergeist. Hello my "Flickr Chums".

KeefW (kmw), Monday, 24 April 2006 21:12 (nineteen years ago)

mate me!?

jed_ (jed), Monday, 24 April 2006 21:19 (nineteen years ago)

I still expect him to come back. Some days I just wait at the station.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Monday, 24 April 2006 21:25 (nineteen years ago)

I am very glad he came.

Cathy (Cathy), Monday, 24 April 2006 21:33 (nineteen years ago)

but you left!

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 24 April 2006 21:38 (nineteen years ago)

me too. although he should probably wipe it up

x-post

(if this isn't funny, it's ailsa's fault for interrupting the flow. ooer.)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 24 April 2006 21:39 (nineteen years ago)

but you left!

It was the spur she needed.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 24 April 2006 21:41 (nineteen years ago)

I am coming back!

Cathy (Cathy), Monday, 24 April 2006 21:42 (nineteen years ago)

Stealing everyone, eventually, is still an achievable long-term goal.

Ally C (Ally C), Monday, 24 April 2006 21:46 (nineteen years ago)

I left too, but that was before I actually knew any of you lot, so that's OK then. It's not your fault. And I didn't go very far.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 24 April 2006 21:48 (nineteen years ago)

I left too. Because it was muddy.

KeefW (kmw), Monday, 24 April 2006 21:50 (nineteen years ago)

You'll never take me alive.

But I might visit again.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 24 April 2006 22:01 (nineteen years ago)

That is not why we moved here.

Ally C (Ally C), Monday, 24 April 2006 22:25 (nineteen years ago)

I'm hoping to move to glasgow, now; just need a job and flat
