Al Pacino (in Scarface)

nathalie (nathalie), Monday, 30 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Alan Arkin as Inspector Clouseau in Inspector Clouseau. To take a terrible one dimensional comedy stereotype and then to play him with depth and humility which makes him instantly likeable and at the same time shatters the pomposity of the British police. Pure under-rated genius.

Oh and any bloke in a Godzilla film not playing a human.

Pete, Monday, 30 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And any two blokes in a donkey suit.

AP, Monday, 30 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Divine

A woman after my heart! :-)

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Monday, 30 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Retraction!!! I wish to amend my best actor answer! To: any bloke who plays "mid-section & hind legs" in a donkey suit.

AP, Monday, 30 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Actors are boring, aren't they.

Nick, Monday, 30 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Geoff, Monday, 30 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

nathalie (nathalie), Monday, 30 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hmmm, Charlie Sheen, honestly, a great actor.

jel, Monday, 30 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Charlie was especially good in the Wraith

nathalie (nathalie), Monday, 30 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i second what nathalie (and tadeusz) said. i'm going to start a scarface thread now.

ethan, Monday, 30 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The best television actor of the last century = Sid Caesar. "Your Show of Shows" dizzying parody and uncomfortable satire non pareil.

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 31 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

After reading that NewsRadio site, I feel like the entire cast makes up the best actors/actresses of the past century.

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 31 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Gene Hackman? At least in The Conversation.

nineteen years pass...

4 Aug 69 Loathe loathe loathe acting. Shudder at the thought of going to work with the same horror as a bank-clerk must loathe that stinking tube-journey every morning. Loathe it, hate it, despise, for Christ's sake,it. Well that has managed to get a little spleen out of my system

Do we have any amateur actors here? I've got a sudden urge to get into acting having never acted in my life. Any tips? I guess contact my local amateur dramatic society? Any good podcasts/youtube channels/books?

If there's a little theatre company in your area, they'll almost certainly have open auditions for parts in their productions. If you can do anything else useful in addition to acting, from promotion to set construction, you'll probably find yourself considered a valuable asset to the company.

Halfway there but for you, Friday, 21 July 2023 00:46 (two years ago)

My sixteen y/o wants to be an actor but has no interest in theatre. I want to get her a camera she can shoot her own shows/shorts/movies on. Any suggestions? Cheap is good but decent quality is required.

But who are we doing it versus? (sunny successor), Friday, 21 July 2023 02:20 (two years ago)

Honestly I think she’s more suited to directing or show running because she is artist as hell and bossy as fuck.

Al Pacino (in Scarface)

Jesus Christ, no

halfway there otm: just show up to something that doesn’t seem boring to you, and if you get cast be as helpful and generous as dignity allows, and don’t throw tantrums, and next thing u know you’ll have to change your name and leave town to escape people asking you to do things

that’s advice for community theater as bowling-together hobby, but as for teknik: tracer hand was recently plugging (the v slim and modestly introductory) a practical handbook for the actor which i like too. as usual tho what you want is experience, w scene partners who know what they’re doing, so you can look in their eyes and pretend you want something from them and see them looking back pretending to want you to get it or not. go to some shows and see if there’s anyone you’d rly like to work with and then see if you can find out what they’re doing next. if you want to seriously Hone Craft then a good way to do a lot of character+scene work without going to school is to see if you can find an improv group? but go and watch them first lol, to check if you can stand them.

all of this of course is only useful if there is anything happening where you are. if there isn’t, literally just put something on with your friends. maybe someone has a porch? you stick the audience in the yard and come in and out the door. just be sure to leave several friends uncast, so there’s someone to attend.
