HE'S SPARTACUS!
"20,000 Leagues..." comes pretty close though... "This food isn't fit to eat!"

snoball, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 21:14 (sixteen years ago)

he doesn't act much in Spartacus, just looks stoic.

I'm partial to Paths of Glory, but it's pretty atypical and subdued for him. Out of the Past, Ace in the Hole, The Bad and the Beautiful, The Big Sky (v underrated Hawks) all choice.

Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 21:19 (sixteen years ago)

I gotta rep for Lonely Are the Brave, but The Big Sky it is

and butt (gabbneb), Wednesday, 17 December 2008 21:20 (sixteen years ago)

I haven't seen much of his work...voted for Paths of Glory. That tribute from his son that runs on TCM all the time always makes me think "hmm, need to check that out."

WmC, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 21:22 (sixteen years ago)

I still need to see The Vikings, Gunfight at the O.K. Corral, Lonely Are the Brave.

Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 21:29 (sixteen years ago)

Lonely Are the Brave is Douglas' favorite

I didn't notice the [POLL closes: January 10] when I first saw this thread and my first thought was "oh noes, it's the RIP thread".

WmC, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 21:33 (sixteen years ago)

otm about Lonely Are The Brave.

A surprisingly poignant Van Gogh, but in the end I was stuck between Champion and Out of the Past; went with the latter, because only Setsuko Hara has wrung so much nuance from a smile.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 21:50 (sixteen years ago)

haven't seen Champion and Detective Story in ages. Remember the latter: "I'd give my soul to take out my brain, hold it under the faucet and wash away the dirty pictures you put there tonight!"

i love 20k leagues but i would have voted out of the past (the above is from a midnight rewatch). my favorite noir villain i think. always smiling, except for submomentary expressions of impatience or hate. his smallness also used well:

very funny when mitchum points out that rather than blackmailing him douglas' accountant could just turn him in for a government reward-- douglas w genuine delight: "ah, you're up on these things!"

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 6 February 2020 11:53 (five years ago)

aiui the incident is fairly well-documented in the Suzanne Finstad bio with corroboration from several sources

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/1470142.stm

The older actor isn’t named but Douglas’s name has kept coming up in the last few years, feels like an open secret - looking on twitter today it seems wood’s sister talked about it on a podcast recently and said she would reveal the name of the rapist once he had died. I’m sure there were lots of still-living actors of the period she could have been referring to other than the guy everyone says it is tho

Pretty horrified to read about these natalie wood allegations. Not sure if it’s more than a rumor though.

I saw The Bad and the Beautiful on Criterion Channel for the first time since the Poppy Bush years. Jeez, is it garish – Sirk without the irony (and of course co-starring Lana Turner). Douglas is a compelling force; every other performance is awful.

watched 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea with my son yesterday, that was fun (horrific treatment of sea turtles and african-americans standing in for south asian cannibals notwithstanding)

ppl going on about the Natalie Wood rape allegation seem to be unaware of the extent to which she was explicitly pimped out by her mother...? Like, I imagine she was abused by quite a number of Hollywood men at the time, and there are rumors about a lot of them (Sinatra, etc.)

Οὖτις, Monday, 10 February 2020 18:45 (five years ago)

also another vote for Out of the Past, he is great in that, playing against type too

Οὖτις, Monday, 10 February 2020 18:46 (five years ago)

The moment in Out of the Past where he realizes how much he’s been played for a fool and the mask slips is incredible.

JoeStork, Monday, 10 February 2020 18:51 (five years ago)

is he really THAT much against type in OotP? It's fairly early in his career (second or third film?) for one thing...

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Monday, 10 February 2020 18:55 (five years ago)

It's not so much type, Shakey, as OTTP's getting made during the embryonic period of his career. He still hadn't found a persona yet.

I remember the promos for this TV movie -- titled Mousey in the US -- from when I was a kid ('74). I figured no one would ever bring it up if I didn't; imagine Kirk as your biology teacher. With Jean Seberg, Dean Wormer and Bessie Love!

he was in an amazing number of good movies and good in a number of not-amazing movies

I like the Douglas/Lancaster battle of giant uniformed egos in Seven Days in May

he's also well suited to amp up the dread and paranoia in The Fury, one of the better big-budget horror films of the 70s
