65-75 ~ you get to meet your grandchildren
75-85 ~ you get to see your grandchildren grow up, you get to meet your great grandchildren
85+ ~ you get to meet your great great great grandchildren, will probably gradually lose your faculties

otm, I'd like to pull a Johnny and June Cash and die within a couple weeks of one another

redmond, Friday, 19 December 2008 19:01 (seventeen years ago)

This depends on a couple of things, if I become stupidly rich, then I’d want to live for as long as I could. If I become poor and it doesn’t look like the rest of my life will be comfortable or shared, ASAP.

At the moment, I’m not arsed and wouldn’t mind if it was tomorrow.

Romantic, but strange. Get another - they're not rationed.

The idea that there's one special person for everyone is one of the most perniciously destructive ideas for human relationships around. Might have made more sense when life expectancy was 35.

Abbott of the Trapezoid Monks (Abbott), Friday, 19 December 2008 19:43 (seventeen years ago)

between 70 and 80. most of the men in my family died around this age, and it suits me too-- enough to know the grandkids a little and have some interesting perspective, but also young enough to drink bourbon and dance around to salsa music, as my grandfather used to do.

Hale old age beyond 90 is much scarcer than hen's teeth, but people do win the lottery, too. It just strikes me that this thread is an invitation to pure wishful thinking, which may be pleasant, but so is thumbsucking for some people.

ethan, how old would you like me to be when I die?

Abbott of the Trapezoid Monks (Abbott), Friday, 19 December 2008 19:53 (seventeen years ago)

I had several grannies (actually a couple of them were great-grannies and great-great-aunts and things) that lived into their 90s, not entirely hale and hearty, but definitely compos mentis. But then again, they were all dead posh, and having servants and champagne for breakfast every morning definitely helps with having a nice old age (just look at the Queen Mum's last years.)

Still, I voted for 21. Even though genetics says I'm not even halfway there yet. :-(

Soukesian, Friday, 19 December 2008 20:11 (seventeen years ago)

No, given the average female age of death in my family, of mid-90s, I'm not halfway to THAT age yet.

You only like him coz he's sexually appalling (Masonic Boom), Friday, 19 December 2008 20:16 (seventeen years ago)

I'm pretty sure once I get settled into life I'll never want to end it (always one more thing to see, one more book to read, etc.), but at the same time I don't want to be at a stage when I'm a crazy statistical anomaly who every year everyone wonders if it'll be my last Christmas. So 80-85, assuming mental faculties fairly intact and physical faculties tolerable? Wouldn't mind seeing the year 2100, though, so I can truly feel that I've lived in "the future" before I go. That'd make me 115, which is prrrrrrrobably unlikely. Especially since all the men in my family die young.

My dad's dad would've been about 105 when I was born, and his dad would've been maybe 145 (they both died in their mid-'60s iirc). I envy families who have mastered the art of assembly line style breeding.

lex pretend, Friday, 19 December 2008 21:55 (seventeen years ago)

xp

But "paternal great-grandfather" sounds so stodgy. How else are you supposed to specify which great-(x)-grandparent you're talking about w/o saying "dad's dad's mom" or "dad's mom's dad's mom's mom's dad"?

arugula (unregistered), Friday, 19 December 2008 22:10 (seventeen years ago)

Worry less about being 'stodgy' and more about concision and clarity.

Worry less about being 'stodgy' and more about concision and clarity.

In this case, though, "dad's dad's dad" is more concise and at least as clear as "paternal-great grandfather." The latter is actually a bit ambiguous ("You have two great-grandfathers on your dad's side of the family. Which one are you referring to?"). I just wonder if there's a more technical (legalese?) way of referring to a great-grandparent without resorting to a string of "father's father's mother's father's mother's etc." I guess that's why it pays to keep a copy of your trusty family tree in your wallet at all times.

just checked my chart again. well since my Mercury period ends in 2061, I'm generally okay til then, but technically not, as Saturn's transit near my Moon starts (at age 76 and a half) in April 2057 - and that will fuck everything up again. i mean i'd just be living in the hospital til that was over. so definitely, definitely, definitely before then - 2056, hopefully

One of my grandfathers died at 82 very suddenly, and he was still independent, competent, and in more or less good health (apart from that random heart attack that killed him)...his younger siblings are around that age now and also still doing well...so I feel like wanting to live longer than that is reasonable. Don't know anyone who has remained healthy or independent past 90 though.

Maria, Thursday, 25 December 2008 04:15 (seventeen years ago)

hung out with my grandfather earlier tonight who will be 96 next week! he is still healthy (telling me about getting exercise on the treadmill 3X a wk) & has the same level of independence other than maybe driving himself for the last 20 years; also he is still super sharp and gave me the latest revised copy of his autobiography!!
