Ok...well, almost no one agrees with me on this, everyone seems to have a favourite,I think one of the key factors to people's enjoyment of them is nostalgia, it brings back the warm glow of singing thema s a kid..but I hated them THEN. I know they have alluring melodies, but in general they piss me off.

when subjected to a lot of carols recently, i started wondering what it is about their music that makes them sound 'christmasssy', whether that was a thing, or just, you know, association by virtue of their use. and wiki sez this:
Traditionally, carols have often been based on medieval chord patterns, and it is this that gives them their uniquely characteristic musical sound. Some carols like "Personent hodie" and "Angels from the Realms of Glory" can be traced directly back to the Middle Ages, and are among the oldest musical compositions still regularly sung.
and you know what? i don't like medieval songs all that much! for me i start liking music when it gets complex and polyphonic. so that may explain some of my antipathy. that and that horrible buggering by a father christmas when i was 8.

In light of being recently informed about the SA's anti-gay activities their awful xmastime noise terror seems even more sinister. I worked at a WalMart one year during the holidays and was subjected to "Away in a Manger" played on a french horn until I wanted to puke.

ugh I need to look into the anti-gay thing. Currently implementing a trade and social ban on everyone and everything anti-gay.
