You Can Only Get a Pint in a Pint Pot

So you meet this anti-immigration guy in a bar and he trots out the old line in the subject line, that we can't let any more people in because the country's too full as it is. How do you convince him of the error of his ways?

MarkH, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

come to think of it, would you?

MarkH, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I've managed to do this before by the age old Socratic techniques of drawing pictures in beer on the bar. If this country is too small (draw beer picture of country) then how are they literally getting on here. How come there is space between us. Then do the dodgy thing with infinitesimal maths (what differences does one make to a population of 55 million) and then use induction.

Then I pop him one for assuming that just because I am white I am not an immigrant.

i wuv Ptee!

katie, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

But you aren't an immigrant Pete! But feel free to hit people anyway.

Emma, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ANd anyway I've had loads of pints in the Pint Pot (Pentonville Road, roof garden - Mark S would love it has it has a giant mural of a bottle of Budweiser in regal robes on a throne for it is the King Of Beers).

Pete, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

you can always ask guy in bar to line up for sterilisation. we can't have him reproducing. not enough room for his spawn either.

Alan T, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Third generation Polish. Its not much I know - but my surname is Polish. Just not obviously so.

Pete, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes well Pete that makes your ancestors the immigrants and I doubt there are many people in this country who couldn't say that eh?

Emma, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

If you start making pint pot analogies, it's worth bearing in mind that France is what, the European country with the second biggest far right vote, yet its population density is pretty low (approximately half that of the UK).

N., Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You certainly can't get a pint in un demi-litre.

Pete, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Isn't the measuring line usually an inch down the glass though? I reckon you might.

Graham, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Or 2-3cm.

Graham, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The last time I saw the figures, there were more people leaving the country than moving in. Oh no! Our pint pot is not full enough! We need more immigration! The infinitessimal argument is bogus, obv, but the numbers have always been very small in comparison to the overall population.

Martin Skidmore, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

There is nothing better than beating someone with an argument that you know is intellectually bogus (ha ha).

Pete, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sometimes I forget my Dad was an immigrant from India. It would be good to use it as a surprise tactic when arguing against racists maybe. But then again, they'd probably just say "Yeah, but you're OK, you've adopted the British way of life". Not that that makes any difference when it comes to pint pot arguments. I don't know. If my Dad stole anyone's job I'm sorry. Ha.

N., Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Are Irish included in the anti-immigration um.....agenda?

Ronan, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, fuck off.

N., Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

And Southerners.

Do the BNP still want to kick out the Angles and Saxons, btw?

N., Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Begorrah all I wanted was place to lay me hat

Ronan, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Beaker People land for Beaker People People! Just say no to Celts!

RickyT, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

katie, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually, you can also get a pint in a gallon jug or in two half-pint mugs. Why won't people think outside the box?

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I get a lot of customers at work who start on at me about immigration and those 'coloured people' and I have to stand there uncomfortably nodding and trying not to say anything because on the one hand they are my customer and I'm meant to keep them happy, but I find what they're saying offensive. I hate people assuming that because I am white I will agree with them. Dunno where I stand on immigration at all, but I am frequently shocked (although I'm told I shouldn't be) by the narrow mindedness of the people I have to work around. Some have gone as far as insinuatating that some of the people I work with are somehow inferior. Why are people like this? I can't understand it. Why's everyone so stupid?

alix, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

bigheaded southern 'pints' are a sham

anti-immigrationne guy - shoot the fucka - make room, make room

a-33, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I tell people who complain about immigration that they dont look Cree.I am not sure how well that would work in England

anthony, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Re Anthony's point, there is a great bit in an episode of Beverly Hillbillies where dodgy research makes someone think their ancestors were on the Mayflower. Some posh fool explains that the longer they can trace back their ancestry in America the higher social rank they have. Jeb says "So I guess the Indians are top of the heap, then," to everyone's horror.

Martin Skidmore, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

anthony, how about this?: london is the oldest multicultural city in the world which actually grew up was possibly even FOUNDED — *as* a multicultural city, a world trading centre, in effect: a roman military camp, with links to the farthest parts of the empire, inside or next a british market town sprung up aggressively to fleece the idiot romans

thus to shut off immigration to london is to betray its identity

mark s, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Absolutely Mark, and the other thing which these idiots forget is that the beloved Anglo Saxons all came from Continental Europe. England is a mongrel nation and immigration whether Roman, Anglo Saxon, Norman or ex-Empire has enriched our culture.

Billy Dods, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think that is why the issue of nationhood is absurd. We were founded by nomads and in alot of basic ways continue to be nomads.
