Probably should be a law against making brothers fite, but I'm curious what the ILx consensus is on this one (seem to be a lot of comix lovers here). So Hopey vs. Luba, who wins?

Gimmee some NEW answers!

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

c'mon, this isn't funny. Los hermanos Hernandez are lovers, not fighters.

Love and Rockets versus Stray Bullets anyone?

misterjones, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i am maggie when i want to be hopey

mark s, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I love them both (more people I've met! I'm getting to do a lot of name-dropping here lately!). The general view within comics is that Jaime is the better artist while Gilbert is the better writer. I think that's probably true, but it does sometimes obscure what a great writer Jaime is and what a great cartoonist Gilbert is. If I were trying to put the top comic writer-artists in order, they'd both be high up, and whichever I ranked higher (Gilbert, I think), there might be nobody in between them. I like Jaime's characters best, as does everyone I've ever met, but that may be because we all know people a bit like Maggie and Hopey and not anyone like Luba et al.

Butbutbut...Mario! Nobody gives him any love.

I was gonna say Jaime, and I do like his stuff better, but the last sentence of Martin's above is a good point to make. Maggie and Hopey are punk kids; Penny's a "superhero"; the wrestling is funny...it's all entertaining but probably a bit more "easy" than coming up with poor characters in an out-of-the-way little Mexican town with no pop cultural bells n whistles.

I like Hopey but I **adore** The Magpie...

i take major umbrage at this statement, but am too tired to explain why. (to myself.)

i am also maggie when i wish to be hopey. although maybe not anymore now that my own real-life hopey has gone.

jess, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

aw jess that makes me sad

mark s, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm surprised you were even able to decode that statement!

punk rock chicks you never get over: classic or dud?

jess, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Jaime, if I had to choose just one, but Jaime without Beto would be like PB without the J. Martin makes a good point, but I wish I knew a woman who walked around with a hammer all the time.

felicity, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Luba is quite like my mom actually, except physically obv.

mark s, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

and all the othah stuff, come to think of it: luba is nothing like my mom, except tuff and lives in a small village where they worship her like a tubby god

mark s, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I (heart) Izzy, and would like to be her. I think I like Beto best, but it's *very* close.

Norman Phay, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i choose patrick hernandez. cos i was born to be alive.

di, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

On the brush with greatness tip, I went to Junior High with them. Gilbert was in my PE class.

nickn, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

God. I go back and forth on them--Jaime's stuff is more instantly likeable & cuter, Gilbert's has a dark salty tang to it that I really love. But I went back and re-read _Wig Wam Bam_ a couple of months ago, and boggled at how beautifully Jaime handles the flashbacks and cross- cuts and their psychological undercurrents. And the "who wants to fuck?" routine is one of the funniest things ever.

Douglas, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

when i got to the last page of chester square i was in tears (yes, salty girly tears...DONT LOOK AT ME LIKE THATWHOAREYOUTOJUDGEME)...something which has never happened with a comic before.

jess, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

five years pass...

I have started thinking that all that Hopey-Maggie stuff Jaime writes was the inspiration for the dialogue in Death Proof.

six years pass...

Have we talked about Jaime basically ending his universe this year

RAP GAME SHANI DAVIS (Raymond Cummings), Tuesday, 14 October 2014 22:43 (eleven years ago)

Also: Jaime over Gilbert a zillion times.

RAP GAME SHANI DAVIS (Raymond Cummings), Tuesday, 14 October 2014 22:44 (eleven years ago)

How did he do it?

everything, Tuesday, 14 October 2014 22:55 (eleven years ago)

With this: http://www.fantagraphics.com/browse-shop/the-love-bunglers.html?vmcchk=1

I don't wanna go into detail for fear of spoiling this for people who haven't read it.

RAP GAME SHANI DAVIS (Raymond Cummings), Wednesday, 15 October 2014 00:12 (eleven years ago)

I believe I remember reading a Jaime interview after "Love Bunglers" wrapped -- he said he wanted to give the Locas universe A point of closure in case he keeled over or got hit by a bus or just felt like not doing any more Maggie & Hopey stories. (I got the impression he was feeling his age during that "L&R @ 30" spate of interviews and book tour and stuff.) But it's not necessarily the absolute final point of closure, because there's a Maggie & Hopey story coming in the next volume of L&R New Stories.

warning, #4 can't be unseen (WilliamC), Wednesday, 15 October 2014 00:38 (eleven years ago)

yeah, that's definitely not the last of the Maggie storyline. The last Love and Rockets didn't have Maggie or Hopey but did still feature characters from their world.

Free Me's Electric Trumpet (Moodles), Wednesday, 15 October 2014 00:43 (eleven years ago)

I'm cool with more, but it FELT like an endpoint, and a hazy one at that. It was really emotional to read.

The thing about this universe is that he could write stories from various points in time forever and ever, and they'll be great.

Have we talked about Jaime basically ending his universe this year

yeah, that came out in 2012, and he's completed two L&Rs since then (we have talked about it a bit)

Starland Vocal Gland (sic), Wednesday, 15 October 2014 00:56 (eleven years ago)

ah. i wasn't aware of that, which is embarrassing. i'm not doing a good job at keeping up...
