Since we can't rely on the weather, there seems to be agreement on:

The Owl and Pussycat Redchurch Street London E2

Meet there at 3ish if you don't want art. If you do, come down at 1 and we'll go look at some galleries, then catch the rest up for some drinks. Then cheap curries or a Vietnamese from someplace like the Nazrul/Viet Hoa before Anthony heads Bobward.

suzy, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Redchurch Street is near corner of Shoreditch High Street and Bethnal Green Road, parallel to the latter. Pub is closer to Shoreditch High Street end.

Transport: Tubes are Old Street, Liverpool Street or Shoreditch, plus short walk. Buses are 242, 243, 55, 8 and a couple of others coming from Sarf that I know not (48 and 35 I think). Sarah?

suzy, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the 47 goes deptford-lewisham-catford too

gareth, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

So I go from Paddington to Liverpool, then how do i get to this place from Liverpool station ?

anthony, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ANTHONY DO NOT GO TO LIVERPOOL! go to London Liverpool Street! you don't wanna get the 2 mixed up!

katie, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

from Paddington you can get the appropriately-pink Hammersmith and City tube (underground) line to Liverpool Street. or the yellow Circle Line (depending on which exit you're coming from) - it takes about 10 minutes.

katie, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sarah, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think Shoreditch station is shut on Sundays. It's k-rub anyway unless you're coming from somewhere on the East London Line.

RickyT, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey I'm still at work! That's k-rub too!

Sarah, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

is this agreed? when can i contact the rub mob? "where is tom?" said dwalin suddenly opening one eye

mark s, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think it's pretty much agreed now and rub mob can be duly called...

Sarah, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am also still at work. Gah!

RickyT, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

treading water in my beautiful pea-green boat...

suzy, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

If a middle-aged stranger turns up (i.e. me), how will I spot any of you? Is there a secret ILX wave or handshake or something? If there isn't, can we make one up?

Martin Skidmore, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I look like a gay lumberjack.

anthony, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Tautology! Don't all lumberjacks look gay? Actually, that's probably a terribly outdated image, but I am middle-aged, so I'm terribly outdated, which makes it okay again. Possibly.

I look like a middle-aged Velvet Underground fan, which is not a terribly false impression.

Martin Skidmore, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll try and get there early for the art thing. Suzy, can you mail me your mobile number (Does she have one? Taking sides: "She is a Trendy Cosmopolitan" vs "She is a Trendy Cosmopolitan"), cos I might be a little bit late and don't fancy hanging about for an hour and a half.

Martin, dig around in the archives for the Picnic in the Sky pics: "Everything's alright (up in the sky)" and "Picnic in the Sky pics" I think they're called.

Graham, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Here and here.

Graham, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Can we make it a bit earler for the art ? Like noon ?

anthony, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Thank you for the picture pointers. I don't know if anyone will understand this, but you somehow look like my friends, without any one of you looking like any one of my friends. I guess it's something like range of ages and looks and dress and all that stuff. It's no wonder I felt at home on ILX pretty quickly. This will help - I didn't much like the idea of going up to strangers and saying "I love everything" in a hopeful voice. I was fearing arrest.

I still think there should be a secret handshake, though.

Martin Skidmore, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

there is but it's a secret

mark s, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Noon? Anthony, I thought about that but I seriously think that all the stuff around there will take us around two hours. I'd three places in mind, one of which is in Redchurch Street itself.

Graham, check your inbox...

suzy, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Is one of them Steven Friedman, Because i really want to see Rivane Neuenschwanders work

anthony, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think that's in the centre of town, A. We're East on Sunday.

suzy, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Neuenschwanders

Only yesterday Lixi and I were talking about the swear word which will be the most unacceptable after "c*nt" BREAKS INTO THE MAINSTREAM. I now think it will be NEUENSCHWANDERS or at least it SHOULD BE.

Sarah, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am a prarie boy in the big city, i get lost.
Suzy- i am mad excited.
In the chambers of my too small heart small white rabbits are waltzing as they quaff champagne

anthony, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Suzy - hoping your plans don't include White Cube2 (as you hint on the other thread) as it's closed on Sundays, I think.

Since I'm now back from Italy I'll try to come along but I have Sunday earmarked for a little trawl of the Bethnal Green galleries, which seem to have more stuff for me at present, so I'm likely to be on the late side.

If I'd got here earlier I'd probably have recommendded the Approach (an OK pub with art upstairs, what could be more appropriate?) but now is not the time to start changing plans.

Tim, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Approach is good - I know the gallerist - and it's probably worth going over that way but these lot need to be placed near to CURRY too. I like the whole NYLON/Anthony Wilkinson/Approach/Interim Art vibe a lot (hooray, Maureen told me about upcoming Hannah Starkey exh at IA, yum).

suzy, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sure... as I say, not really suggesting a change. Really just trying to save you a wasted stroll to Hoxton Sq. TOATP will be fine, I'm sure (though I've never been in, and I'm assuming you're certain it's open on Sunday afternoons, I can't remember).

Tim, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The trapsing arround london is much more likely on a Sunday, Paddington is less of a concern.

anthony, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hooray - this sounds good to me. I'll no doubt still be incommunicado but will show up, quite possibly with Isabel too (I just auto- typed "in tow" then realised what a horrible phrase it is).

Tom, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

This is going to be pure rock TOM EVEN !

anthony, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Now I am truly jealous! For I have long wished to meet the good Isabel. Another time!

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the rub mob AND dr vick send their respective apologies for sunday btw (all suddenly out of town hmmm): suzy and anthony i will probably hook up with you guys for ART if my MITEY writing stint on sat goes well-ish

mark s, Friday, 10 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

So the human stand-ins for your 12-foot lizard gang failed their end of term aptitude tests?

Graham, Friday, 10 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yes the pathetic bumbling idiots: my minion agency let me down the LAST TIME I TELL YOU!!

mark s, Friday, 10 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

so where exactly is the 1pm meet-up?

toby, Friday, 10 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

or is it in fact a noon start for art??

toby, Friday, 10 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i think the latter toby

mark s, Friday, 10 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

1pm, owl + pussycat I think.

(I am not getting up at 5:30am)

Graham, Friday, 10 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

new consistency answers! (please)

toby, Saturday, 11 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes it is definitely 1pm as 12 much too early for most.

suzy, Saturday, 11 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

sorry to get there so late guys, and miss some of you: great to meet you anthony and martin

mark s, Sunday, 12 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Apologies for appearing dead and/or mute (v.v.tired). I think I really enjoyed it, and I'll say for sure when I'm awake.

Graham, Sunday, 12 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

So any reports from this meeting of minds? After all I am having to make do with your reports to fill in for meeting Anthony for me what with not being able to make either meetup.

Pete, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hi Anthony - sorry to miss you but we were exhausted :( See you Wednesday though!

Tom, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Did you guys take pics? I WANNA SEE PICTURES.

nathalie, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Aye, what Tom said (although I am still knackered today) and see you on Weds!

Sarah, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I shall take my camera on Wednesday!

jel --, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Anthony is groovy. Apologies for not hanging out past five = evening commitments. What's up for Wednesday?

suzy, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh and totally unplanned was the mass detour to Bangladesh Mela in Brick Lane, eating homemade Bombay mix and anything else from food stalls not nailed down. Those of you who missed this should rue that...

suzy, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

BAH you all ate curry without me, rotters! ;) sprry for not turning up, i too was knackered (and at IKEA hur hur)... suzy i think we're headed for some quaintly-monikered dive in Paddington on Wednesday - is this still the plan chaps?

katie, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

http://www.ilxor.com/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg.tcl?msg_id=0092WK

this is the thread you want - soz about lack of HTML skills. crocker's folly = WHA'?

katie, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Indeed, Ms G. Crocker's Folly for fine ales, port and cheese.

RickyT, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

PORT AND CHEESE!

Sarah, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My friend Joss told me about Hot Port. Like hot whiskey stylings. Here is his recipe:

Port + hot water + sugar + lemon slice + cloves = yum.

COR I think he might be lying but I still fancy trying it out. Will it still go with cheese or need another accompaniment?

Sarah, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

(Hot port + A HAM)++++

RickyT, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Do not drink any alcohol hot. It loses its alcohol. Though gets you pissed quicker. (The perenial swings and roundabouts I believe).

Pete, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

*faints in joy* ROLL ON WEDNESDAY *practises GNAWING action for the HAM*!

Sarah, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Paddington Bear: grate.

But Paddington boozer plan: forget it. Why not go to Reading and be done with it?

the pinefox, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Pinefox is just jealous of my ham.

Sarah, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh no! Ham Jealousy! Oh no!

jel --, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

mmmmmm PORT. can you buy it without the cheese? surely. though i like the sound of sarah's hot port recipe, i quail at the idea of adding water. surely this would deprive the port of its, ahem, portliness? i say we all get smashed on port on wednesday, eh what whot ho?

katie, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It was great to meet some of the people here. I think I'm coming on Wednesday as well. The big surprise yesterday was the number of people on and around Brick Lane - it turned out to be Bangladeshi New Year, so it was astonishingly packed.

Martin Skidmore, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm sure you can order port on it's own, but they have a special half bottle of port + cheese thing on for £12.50 which I fully intend to order along with someone else... Rick?

Sarah, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You rang?

RickyT, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hello my port and cheese loving buddy!

Sarah, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

And I got home late because I got off the perfectly good train I was on to get a train that didn't exist and had to hang around in Stockport for another one going to exactly the same place as the one I was on. However, because I didn't have the decency to be born early enough to be able to vote against the Tories, I thoroughly deserve this. I apologise.
