Facts of Life? Zany wacky girls or is it made of deeper stuff?

p f. sloane, Monday, 30 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Is this a new comedy show or something?

Nick, Monday, 30 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Er, actually it's an 80's sitcom which (briefly) featured George Clooney. Featuring the exploits of 4 "girls" (the show ran on til they were in their mid twenties at least) and a kindly housekeeper who have all kinds of wacky adventures together. The good reason to watch it now would be to laff at the clothes.

Nicole, Monday, 30 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Its a classic and I have a framed portrait of the cast in my kitchen.

Mike Hanle y, Monday, 30 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Above or below yr We've got It Maid signed poster?

mark s, Monday, 30 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That George Clooney was in this show makes it a surefire dud. That, and Blair needed to be bitch-slapped in the worst way.

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Monday, 30 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have a similar picture of teh Family Ties gang in living room

Mike Hanle y, Monday, 30 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What happened to Tina Yothers?

More importantly, which episode of Facts of Life did you learn a important lesson about life?

i.e. If you wreck a kitchen by spilling paint or if you crash the school van that your life will be enslaved by Edna Garrett?

p f. sloane, Monday, 30 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What happened to Tina Yothers?

She's in a very bad LA bar band, from what I'm told. A friend of mine went and saw them and said they were like 4 non blondes "only worse"...

Nicole, Monday, 30 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

She did sing on one episode of Family Ties. I made a tape of it. Hilarious sub-madonna stuff.

Favourite member of Facts of Life?

Answer: Joe. Cause she tough and hard and carries a wrench.

p f. sloane, Monday, 30 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

interesting you mention family ties as nancy keogh was in a teen summer camp comedy with michael j fox, which for some reason i recall was called poison ivy, but that couldn't be right as that had drew barrymore and melissa gilbert - no wait, was it alyssa milana - aaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Geoff, Monday, 30 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

If memory serves me correctly that was 'Summer Camp' and in that very movie was the first blossomings of a in real life relationship between that brilliant auteur Nancy McKeogh (Jo) and that sick junkie Micheal J. Fox.

Skill testing question: What shop did the girls run with the monies left over from the insurance money recieved?

p f. sloane, Monday, 30 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's a shame Gary Olsen died.

Nick, Monday, 30 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

When the boy you used to date you hate, it's about time that you investigate "the Facts of life"

Pleasant theme song written by Alan Thicke and sung by Gloria Loring or code for the freemasons?

p f. sloane, Monday, 30 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sorry for bizarre Gary Olsen comment. It was meant for another thread entirely.

Nick, Monday, 30 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I was a bit confused by the mention of Gary Olson as I had thought that he was a serial killer in America. Then I thought he could have made a guest appearance on Facts of Life, ala Stacey Q, singing the brilliant 'Two of Hearts'.

The skill testing question?

'Over our heads'

As in 'we are over our heads'

How many television sitcoms did the 'band thang?'.

Facts of Life - Silky Lingerie Family Ties - The Tina Yothers Experience The Partridge Family The Brady Bunch (who I think are brilliant, see rkyo reissue of same).

p f. sloane, Monday, 30 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

remember the "ripped clothes' they bnought? they loved preripped clothing

Mike Hanle y, Monday, 30 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mike, remember Andy? I do believe in one episode 'Andy' went to a 'punk rock' concert in nothing but pre-ripped clothing and spiked hair with a skeleton earring.

Of course, that is not the only time that Facts of Life flirted with the underground: When the girls went to see Stray Cats and described it to their slavemaster Garrett as: Oh it's great, they have green mohawks and smash their instruments on stage.

The new wave clothing of Natalie! Classic! She changed her look and lost a bit of weight.

Or the proto-joan jett stylings of 'Jo'.

But seriously, you knew the show was lost when they introduced 'Sam', the australian, when Andy was looking a bit old. And the store suddenly is remade into two bedrooms even though they were depending on that money to survive?

Where is the continuty?

p f. sloane, Monday, 30 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Boy that Geroge Clooney mention right off is a red herring, I'd say. You might as well say it was a sitcom that starred Molly Ringwald! (which it did in its first year) or Family Ties was a sitcom starring Leo DiCaprio.

Of course, that is not the only time that Facts of Life flirted with the underground Yeah, despite later attempts at re-tooling (which included Clooney), Facts of Life was part of the wave of "teen" and "pre-teen" shows of the day that attempted at times to "handle" issues. (See: the Punky Brewster pot episode credited with kicking off the "Just Say No" campaign; the Nancy Reagan appearance on "Diff'rent Strokes" to intriduce said campaign and the peadophilia episode on that same show, with WKRP's Gordon Jump photographing Arnold shirtless jumping on a bed). "Facts of Life" had an early episode in which Tootie ran off to NYC and a pimp and one of his girls tried to befriend her and, it's assumed, get her to walk the street. And, not that this is at all "dark" just atypical for a sitcom, the show had a semi-regular character that was a Down's Syndrome comedian.

By the way, Natalie obviously rocked. "Token overweight" girl is the first to find love (with a fellow named "Snake," no less) and lose her virginity -- and not due to poor self-esteem.

Pathetic display of early 80s sitcom knowledge, pt. II: The Nancy McKeon-Michael J. Fox made-for-TV movies were "Poison Ivy" and "High School U.S.A."

scott p., Monday, 30 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I used to have a major major crush on Jo. Things got pretty bizarre after George Clooney and that australian girl came in. In the very early ones, Blair was clearly meant to be a large-breasted deep-cleavaged slut, and they sadly toned down that aspect until she became just yer average vain rich bitch, which is a lot less interesting as far as stereotypes go.

Patrick, Monday, 30 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

PEDANT ALERT!

Leo DiCap was on _Growing Pains_. The irrascable, spunky little punk kid that endeared himself to the Seavers with his aw-shucks charm and pull-up-the-bootstraps work ethic.

The world never seems to be living up to my dreams.

Blair was clearly meant to be a large-breasted deep-cleavaged slut, and they sadly toned down that aspect until she became just yer average vain rich bitch, which is a lot less interesting as far as stereotypes go.

This could be because the actress playing her (I forget her name) was a very conservative Christian. But yes, it was a lot less interesting.

Nicole, Monday, 30 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Lisa Whelchel I think. And mega-Christian is right. I have no idea why I know this, but supposedly it was Blair, not Natalie, that was supposed to be first to do the deed, but Lisa 'protested' so Mindy Cohn got lucky instead.

Kim, Monday, 30 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Remember that one episode with a guest spot by Michael Damian? Hah. What a walkin hairdo that guy was.

Kim, Monday, 30 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Was Garret an overprotective ass face?

Mike Hanley, Monday, 30 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

BTW, the comedian had cerebral palsy, not Down's syndrome. 'Twas Life Goes On that first had an actor with Down's syndrome, and that one wasn't a sitcom.

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Tuesday, 31 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

PEDANT ALERT!

Yes, of course. Thanks David! (and Tadeusz)! Grr, from now on, please, nobody believe a word I say.

scott p., Tuesday, 31 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

* geez, now all you have to do is knock it out of the park, eh?

scott p., Tuesday, 31 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

wtf was life oges on if not a sitcome?

Geoff, Tuesday, 31 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

sigh. this and family ties were my two favourite shows in grade 5. pre-over-our-heads/pre-andy facts of life is totally classic. i also loved jo, though i don't remember if it was a crush per se or just an admiration of her attitude. i remember the dramatic episode where they went to france and she got in with the french guy being totally intense.

I actually enjoyed this. The Facts of Life episode was one that I vividly remembered from my youth and featured John Stewart as Deadhead Carl, a character who opened my mind to the idea that Grateful Dead fans could be nerds and not just heshers. Also, Kevin Hart killed it as Arnold on Different Strokes. He should get an Emmy.

BrianB, Wednesday, 8 December 2021 12:33 (four years ago)

Ok, I was being facetious about the Emmy, but Kevin Hart as Arnold with a beard and Damon Wayans as Willis with Snoop Dog as his sidekick was genius casting, as was John Lithgow as Mr. Drummond.
