yes, I spelled that correctly. So anyway, could it ever work? It seems like the money/hostage handoff is always pretty sticky.

i'm sure you could get away with it in a country where the law enforcement is notoriously corrupt...

bc, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

...like L.A.?

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

we should have our own variety hour

bc, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

we do!

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Someone oughta make a coffee table book of ransom notes.

Kris, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

you have a can-do attitude that i'm ready to vote for.

as far as kidnaping, i direct you towards Who's Harry Crumb for a workable blueprint.

bc, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Why not create one? It could be marketed into the next Selection of "Oprah's Book Club": "Empowering Yourself Through Monetary Motivation".

Nichole Graham, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The perp has the power -- key is not to ask for TOO much and thus give them motivation to pay you off on the hush&hush rather than getting all messy about it. Take money first, release hostage second, as seperate acts. How do they know you won't double-cross them? They don't, but what're they gonna do, huh?

Sterling Clover, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

make sure you have a meathead accomplice in a remote undisclosed location with the kidnapped - "my associate gary will introduce fair juliana to a woodchipper if i don't call him with the password within an hour!"

bc, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Anyone ever read The Collector by John Fowles?

Prude, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

with "my friend has a woodchipper" strategy though you really have to be prepared to kill the person and, moral implications aside, it's not a good idea. the cops WILL find the body and then they will find you. they always do. i think Sterling's on the right track - you have to get the cops out of the picture. blackmail might be the key here. blackmail + kidnaping = yahtzee. no one knows and everybody gets what they deserve --> you get recompense for having the cojones to follow through on an opportunity, and they get the agony that's coming to them for doing whatever it is they didn't want anyone else to know about.

does john fowles have some light to shed on the subject, prude?

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the woodchipper's a bluff, isn't it? it only matters if they believe you'll grind em up. it's a method for increasing your odds on a successful money exchange. why combine blackmail and kidnaping when you can just blackmail? the added element of a kidnap victim might be enough to make the target get over their secret and then it's fuxed.

ned and petrajane have been plotting to kidnap rainy with lollies/sweets/candy. they will not succeed. i will foil their plans with the ultimate weapon: ice-cream-and-peanut-butter-sandwiches.

di, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

surely pies is the key work here di? the side with pies gets her

mark s, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

does rainy eat pies?

di, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Kidnaping, when international, is one of the few remaining federal capital offenses. I'm not sure whether that is a pro or a con.

pienaping is a chompable offense

bc, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

they will not succeed.

I am a mere pawn in this matter, for Petra Jane specifically asked me to kidnap Rainy for her -- it should be noted that Rainy agreed to this Sanrio candy temptation, so these ice cream sammiches had best be good. Indeed, I think they should be given to me to give to her (any later complaints that Rainy in fact got none of them can be ignored).

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

you are deluded if you think you can carry it off w/o pies

mark s, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I REVEL IN MY DELUSIONS.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Let me just tell you now, nobody's gonna pay you any money to give me back.

rainy, Friday, 10 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You are all under arrest

GEDDINTHABACKATHEVAN!!!!!

The Police, Saturday, 11 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i would pay if i had money.

di, Saturday, 11 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Di you can't kidnap someoneandpay money for their safe return!

or can you...?

, Sunday, 12 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Theoretically you'd just be paying yourself, so why not?

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 12 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

but i'm not going to kidnap you, merely make sure ned and petra do not perpetrate this atrocity.

di, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

di where the hell are you?

Josh, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)
