BBC reports:

England squad for World Cup finals:

Seaman (Arsenal), Martyn (Leeds), James (West Ham), Ferdinand (Leeds), Campbell (Arsenal), Southgate (Middlesbrough), Ashley Cole (Arsenal), Bridge (Southampton), Mills (Leeds), Brown (Man Utd), Keown (Arsenal), Beckham (Man Utd), Scholes (Man Utd), Gerrard (Liverpool), Dyer (Newcastle), Butt (Man Utd), Hargreaves (Bayern Munich), Joe Cole (West Ham), Owen (Liverpool), Heskey (Liverpool), Vassell (Aston Villa), Fowler (Leeds), Sheringham (Tottenham). On standby: Murphy (Liverpool)

DJ Martian, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mills??????

Murphy would be a better bet than Butt perhaps, he's a big occasion player I admit, but it is the World Cup afterall.

Ronan, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

3 players I would not have selected:

Sheringham (Why: 36 year old, past it, - it would have been better to pick Matt Jansen - the future plus he can play on the left)

Vassell (Has become Teachers Pet - there are better options)

Keown (why - when Campbell, Ferdinand, Brown, Southgate - can play at Centre Half - a wasted choice IMHO for Keown)

Reminder

No

Carragher Anderton Mcmanaman Phil Neville Raymond Parlour Frankie Lampard Clever Trev Sinclair Andy Cole Matt Jansen Kevin Phillips

DJ Martian, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Rather impressed, skewing towards a fair bit of youth in there. His starting eleven is pretty obvious (with perhaps the exception of the left side but despite not having had a good game for England Dyer will probably still slot in there) but he has given himself a lot of options and an awful lot of potential pace too.

Glad to see Sherringham there, I have "footballing brain" in the office most used phrase sweep.

Pete, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

A question for Spurs fans - Did Anderton deserve a chance in the friendlies on this seasons form, as Dazza Anderton is a big tourno player i.e euro 96 and WC 98.

DJ Martian, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No way should Sick Note Anderton be in. Not a chance. The Spurs conspiracy has gone on long enough.

Biased as it may sound from a 'Pool fan I'd have had Carragher in aswell. No way should Lampard be there, he blows hot and cold. Trev Sinclair might be worth having along. Don't see enough of Macca to know for sure, I wonder did he realise how much playing in Spain would affect his England chances. (or not playing in Spain.)

Ronan, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Other players overlooked G. Le Saux (good Ashely Cole and Wayne Bridge better and younger options - build for the future - GLe Saux would wind refs up and get sent off) also Ehiogu did not make it.

DJ Martian, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No Phil Neville! Again! Ha! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Matt DC, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yep Micky Gray of Sunderland would have been my stand by choice if Ashley Cole or Wayne Bridge had been injured.

DJ Martian, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Isnt Beckham injured ?

anthony, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, but he should be back for England's second game in the first group stage.

DJ Martian, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Indeed lack of any Neville means curse of Neville avoided. Yay!

Pete, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Also see the FA website for Under 21 squad - for the European U21 Championship in Switzerland, looks good - I reckon England have a good chance in this competition.

DJ Martian, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Andy Cole has announced his retirement from International football, he is pissed off - of not been given a fair chance by all the England managers, including Sven.

DJ Martian, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Andy Cole announcing retirement parallels with Stephen Byers announcing Martin Sixsmiths retirement. Sixsmith was sacked, so could not retire. Cole is not an international player anymore cos no-one will pick him.

Can I announce my retirement from international football too?

Pete, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Poland/England may yet need an invincible barnet ape to slot into a Carlton Palmer role.

Ronan, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

As a Scot i will be boycotting the world cup (apart from when i'm cheering on whoever happens to be playing England).

Leigh, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I feel sorry for McMannaman. He plays the game right way i.e. ambles around. That's the way I play and is the proper thing to do.

Jonnie, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I agree with Leigh with regard to the anti-England thing but I love the world cup - a whole month of glorious football.Ahh.

Jonnie, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

He used to score about 3 amazing goals every season.

On a separate note I'm getting sick of the usual world cup ad mania. Especially the FIFA World Cup 2002 Playstation ad with the Italians and French celebrating.

SECRET:Irish TV has a tattooed English football hooligan celebrating. And jesus buying fucking oranges at some grocers isn't going to make Ireland win the World Cup, same goes for all the other stupid ads.

Let me tell you be glad you don't live in Ireland because ex central defending legend Paul McGrath is EVERYWHERE. No exaggeration I think he's done about 30 ads in the last year. Anything to keep the debt collectors from the door.........

Ronan, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Paul McGrath is with the BBC for their Japan/South Korea coverage. There will be no escape.

Jonnie, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

God.......

One of the ads involved God talking in a large booming (but slightly country) Irish accent saying "AH TIS MY OLD FRIEND MCGRATH". "Yes boss, I'm here to tell you about the great offers on footware at Champion Sports". "GOOD MAN MCGRATH".

Dear oh dear.

Ronan, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

This sounds great. I'm moving to Ireland.

Ally C, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Come on everybody - Keown in the squad is a wasted choice - any one agree - surely it would have been better to pick a utility player such as Carragher or a creative midfielder such as Lampard or Anderton.

DJ Martian, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Certainly, too many centre halves, and the midfield could be stretched, what with Gerrard and Dyer pulling muscles as the slightest provocation

Matt Fallaize, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

[Latest..Carragher has to have a knee op at end of season - therefore discounted.]

DJ Martian, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Can I announce my retirement from international football too?

Not me. I'd like Sven to know that I'm still available if he needs me. Especially to fill in the hole.

Billy Dods, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

thought that was Ulrika's job

Matt Fallaize, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

woohoo no Phil Neville, damn, Keown and No Macca, who has been playing well lately from what I have seen. Carragher looked out of sorts against Blackburn (which I just watched in a bar with a couple of large Changs - which are beers - in the heat and humidity)

Just watched the arsenal Manyoo game too, until some fat fuck from Reno just turned it over in favour of some dodgy game show.

chris, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd come back if I were you Chris - Thailand is obviously rub.

Some fat fuck from Reno - were you at a orgy or something.

Pete, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I bet the locals were looking at you thinking "I can't believe the tourists still buy the fat Reno guys"

Ronan, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am filled with mirth.

Saw the Arsenal/Man U yesterday and was deeply pleased at the end result (though I kept wondering when the hell someone was finally going to get a red card, at that rate).

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Martian is OTM.

the pinefox, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm just buying a flat within a kick of Upton Park, so I'd like to say that I'm delighted that Joe Cole is in - we look rather short of good creative options, anyone who might ever beat two players and play a killer pass, anyone to bring on late if we're desperate for a goal, and I was afraid he might take Murphy, say, instead of Cole.

I bet a year ago Andy Cole didn't think he'd be England's third best Cole by this point.

The main fault, obv, is the complete absence of any Bristol Rovers players. I expect you're all as surprised and disappointed by this as I am.

Martin Skidmore, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Terry Benson and Jimmy Hedges? One of them's 46!

Chewshabadoo, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I fucking hate Andy Cole. But I am careful these days since I wishes Princess Di dead, and lo!

Mark C, Saturday, 11 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I havent heard that Paul McGrath ad, Ronan. That sounds priceless! Know the tv ad with Jack Charlton-"I've never been afraid of taking the direct route to goal"!! hurhur...that's a good squad...that Hargreaves guy is v. good...anyone see Damien Duff's goal against Liverpool during the week?......

michael bourke, Saturday, 11 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The squad gets weaker by the day.

the pinefox, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

[I am slipping muscle wasting agents into their isotonic pop]

N., Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Now - Keown's inclusion as an extra defender looks even more daft. With Butt and Beckham still far from 100 % and now Dyer out and Gerrard dispatched to Belgium.

The squad announcement was made too early ! the FIFA deadline is next week? Therefore the England Squad announcement was a media intention PR thang, there is still time to boot Keown off the list - and draft in another midfielder. But ofcourse this will not happen.

DJ Martian, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

so tricky Trev is on standby now? where is the quality? I fear for poor Stevie G, he was to be the star of the tournament.

chris, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I reckon Gerrard will make it, but reoccurance is obv a problem. Presumably Murphy will replace Dyer, but who should replace Gerard if he *doesn't* make it? Hopefully not MacManaman, but then who? If we're down to the likes of Sinclair, it's looking thin.

Keown should be going, you're way off beam DJM. He was one of the few successes of Keegan's miserable regime - he can defend and defend without giving away free kicks, and rarely gifts the ball to the opposition. I wouldn't start with him, but I'd definitely bring him on with 15 minutes to go when we're 1-0 up against Argentina ;)

Dr. C, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

If Keown played against Argentina he wouldn't last 10 minutes.Aimar would ensure he got sent off/substituted.Which would obviously be a great thing.

Jonnie, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

>>> "who should replace Gerard if he *doesn't* make it? Hopefully not MacManaman, but then who?"

DARREN AAAAAANDERTON

the pinefox, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, for all of his monkey ancestry, Keown is a solid and unimaginative defender which as Dr C rightly says, can shore up a defence in panicky moments.

I must admit, I always favoured Murphy over Dyer anyway, considering they are going to play them on the left. Dyer has not really convinced in that role for England. Gerrard is the problem though - very important player, especially is Scholes picks up too many of his inevitable yellow cards.

Pete, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

According to the BBC website Gerrard is definitely out of the world cup.

Jonnie, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yep, it is now FACT - no Gerrard as he is going to have an operation on his groin.

Jonnie, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I only get to see an hour of English soccer a week down here in Oz so I'm in no position to pontificate but my big question is WHERE THE HELL IS KEVIN PHILLIPS? I get the distinct impression if he played for a London club or Liverpool or 'Manooted' or Leeds or some other high-profile club he'd be in like a shot. There also seems to be a lot of blokes who seem to start a lot of games on the bench for their clubs, a few too many for comfort.

Shame the squad's falling like ninepins, for a while I almost let myself believe England were in with a yelp.

PS. How did Holland (with Bergkamp, van Niesselrooy and the Chelsea bloke who looks and his name sounds like a New Orleans jazz muso) contrive to miss out on a spot in the finals?

BJ, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"the Chelsea bloke who looks and his name sounds like a New Orleans jazz muso" = Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink

Phillips, like the rest of Sunderland's top players, was a bit of a let down this year. I think it's fair to say that he shouldn't really displace any of the forwards on Sven's side.

Holland: victim of a very tough group, with Portugal finishing top, and Ireland deservedly taking second and beating out Iran to make the finals. There's no way Holland isn't one of the top fifteen European sides, but the group system hits at least one team unfairly every go, and this time it was the Dutch.

thirteen years pass...

Which tubeway stop on the Yorkshire tubeway is that middle picture of?
