Tron: C/D?

I just saw Tron for the first time in many, many years last night while waiting for pot. The pot never showed up (grr!) but the movie was a hell of a lot better than I remember it being. Is it a chilling view of a semi-near-future that hits too close to home, or is it just that the light-cycles are hella cool?

Oh, yeah, and it's got Bruce Boxleitner (Capt. Sheridan of Babylon 5 fame, of course) looking young and kind of doofy.

adam, Monday, 30 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

hella cool, as was commodore 64 game that went with it.

Geoff, Monday, 30 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dud for the video game. The man with the tasers would always aggravate me.

Classic for the movie: A programmers worse nightmare suddenly comes alive when he realizes that he is part of the game.

What is the disney version of Star Wars that came out shortly afterwards. The Black Hole! Does anyone remember the Black Hole?

p f. sloane, Monday, 30 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Grate production notes fact [possibly everyone knows this but I'm going to say it anyway]: when the first rushes were shown everyone GASPED IN HORROR. Because the overall tints (generally blue), just did not match. And could not be synched up. It just kept changing colour, in a lame and naff way. Up pipes jr sci-fi nerd (I know not who): "Here's how we a. solve this b. make film EVEN BETTER. Every time colour changes, add on s/t noise of electric power surge hum."

And they did!

mark s, Monday, 30 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Classic. Way ahead of its time...blablabla...

"Now that is a big door!"

Omar, Monday, 30 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

CLASSIC CLASSIC CLASSIC!! Agreed, way ahead of its time. The dialogue is awful, though. Also, the plot makes reference to things that seem never to have made it past the cutting-room floor (e.g. those 'spiders'). It reminds me of Ridley Scott's Legend in that manner. They should have just abandoned a plot and went for a 'WTF?!' 2001-type movie.

But anyway, David Warner never looked more sinister than in that glowing helicopter, and I wish they would reissue the damn Wendy Carlos soundtrack. The Discs of Tron game is one of my favorites.

Joe, Monday, 30 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

1 Deifinate classic 2 THe soundtrak is great which I own and I belive is still unissued because the master tapes melted and need ot be fixed. 3 the soundtrak in its entirety is available on audio galaxy 4 Wendy carlos kicks ass 5 the video game was one of the best ever, glowing blue jotstick!!

Mike Hanle y, Monday, 30 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It was pretty cool. I don't even like much sci-fi anymore, but that one was....well, I remember it being cool anyway. Wonder if I'd change my mind now? I'd certainly rather fire that video up than (cringe) saccharine like ET or Star Wars sequels...

Jeff Bridges sure has done a lotta movies, eh?

Chris, Monday, 30 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

So fucking classic it HURTS. I've said this for some time now -- _Tron_ is to computer animation in films as Kraftwerk is to electronic music: both are clearly products of their time and both have been technically outstripped by what has come since -- *but* it is precisely the 'classic' approach of both band and movie with the limitations they were working with which has made them stand the test of time.

A friend discovered that the only real way to see the movie anymore is to watch the French dub on the DVD. Hearing the MCP say "Fin de transmission" is worth it alone. ;-)

Also -- apologies if this has been mentioned -- anyone else catch the easter egg of Mickey Mouse's face at one point? Presumably this has long since made the rounds, but I can proudly claim I figured this one out on my own after only a couple of viewings. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Monday, 30 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Black Hole! Does anyone remember the Black Hole?

I remember some dude with a beard named Maximillian. Is this the same thing?

Kris, Monday, 30 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

NooOOooooooo.... Maximillian was the mad scientist dude's big scary red robot with propellor knives for hands! Scary as hell! Awesome!

Tron was good too...

Kim, Monday, 30 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

easter egg? I rented teh black hole recently, it was better than I rembered. Rent it

Mike Hanley, Monday, 30 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i am going to marry the master control programme. david warner rules. so does wendy carlos.

i am going to murder jeff bridges. is that flynn gormless or what?

lady die, Tuesday, 31 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ultra-super-mega-classic. This movie is probably more responsible for turning me into an SF fan than any other (including "Star Wars").

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 31 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The reason you think that the bearded villain in the Black Hole was called Maximillian is that he was ... the actor that is!

That's right, Maxmillian Schnell played the darstedly doctor, Hans Reinhardt, and wasn't he a nasty piece of work! You probably know him from such greats as A Bridge Too Far, the TV version of Phantom of the Opera and of course Hamlet in Hollywood.

So why was the robot called Maximillian in the film as well? Well, that was a joke from the film-makers. Perhaps they wanted to amuse us, bemuse us or simply confuse us - but whatever it was, I'm sure we all agree it worked!

six months pass...
Time to revive this bastard, since the two-disc edition with mega-extra stuffage has just come out. Got it tonight and just watched it again for the first time in a while -- damn sweet.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 2 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

is anyone going to the thing at the ICA?

22nd February Ladytron are providing a new original live score to a screening of Tron. Arthur Baker will be DJing and the first 150 people also get to see The Matrix (yeah, like, wow).

it's in association with Uncut and Playstation 2.

i wanna go. that and the coil/mouse on mars/plaid computer games thing at the barbican which sounds totally skill.

Wyndham Earl, Saturday, 2 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

How cool! Go and report.

I forgot to mention that there's an elaborate promo at the start of the new disc for the incipient Tron sequel, TronKillerApp. Going to the site sets up an interesting little situation -- there's been no confirmed word on what the story will be about.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 2 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Very much a classic. Have the new version but haven't watched it yet.

Andy K, Saturday, 2 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The documentary is pretty good -- as long as the film itself! You get a sense of how *complicated* it all was to make, just amazing the effort they put into it.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 2 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

unfortunately not living in the vicinity of the capital there isn't much chance of me making it to the Ladytron/Tron extravaganza.

if you like i can write a review of what i think it would be like.

Wyndham Earl, Saturday, 2 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I just realized I never followed up on the Mickey Mouse face easter egg deal -- they might mention it in the commentary, but if not: keep an eye out for the Solar Sailer sequence. Shortly after it first escapes Sark's cruiser and (I think) after Flynn is rescued by Tron, and before the grid bug/switching beams part, there's a very quick bit showing the Sailer just cruising along from left to right over a weirdly stylized landscape with all these curves outlined on the ground. Those curves are, in fact, Mickey Mouse's face in profile -- he is facing the left, I seem to recall.

I just caught another one last night, which also gets mentioned in the documentary. When Sark is looking at the map screen on his ship and tersely ordering his men to "Get them!," referring to the lightcycle breakout trio, look for the yellow Pac-Man on the right of the screen. There are various audio noises from Pac-Man throughout the mix on Sark's ship, actually...

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 2 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The double disc 20th anniversary Tron is gold, if only for the deleted Tron/Yori love sequence. The double disc also contains the soundtrack in full. Skeptical about Tron 2.0, though, based on the little I've read on iMDB. Most prized possession: full collection of Tron action figures, including Light Cycles.

Black Hole: Totally terrifying, esp. the ending.

jek, Sunday, 3 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

There's lots of crap on the web about possible Tron 2.0, but I think it's all crap. on the other hand, i just saw some extracts from Avalon the live action film from the Ghost in the Shell director, and that looks like as close as you'd get to a modern day version of Tron, so let's all go see it.

Alan T, Sunday, 3 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

can i just use the word "crap" again. thank you. (idiot)

, Sunday, 3 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think it's all crap

Not if the promo I mentioned is any indication -- also, the making of doc shows some initial concept art from the planned sequel. It might not be made in the end, but it's gone beyond the talking stages.

ok this is weird as i was sat on the train only this past tuesday morning contemplating the storyline for a sequel to Tron.

Ste, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 13:44 (eighteen years ago)

Tron 2.0 the game is actually really good, and worth tracking down.

kingfish, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 14:18 (eighteen years ago)

It is, but it's also really bloody hard in places. I'm still stuck at the point where I have to snipe these flying balls in some sort of huge directory library room. I load it up and my energy gets zapped to nothing sometimes in less than 3 seconds.

It would be cool if they re-set this sequel back in the 80's, with all the old arcade games from back then.

"Cute."

Ste, Monday, 4 February 2008 09:31 (eighteen years ago)

Though I remember when this came out as a wee kiddie, I'd never seen it til a few weeks back and I was quite pleasantly suprised how good it is. It isn't that dated visually because they didn't go overboard with trying to use as much cutting edge tech as they could have - the painterly feel really works. Bruce Boxleitner is his usual amusingly over dramatic self a la Bab5, but hey I like that.

Autechre should totally do the S/T for the remake!

Trayce, Monday, 4 February 2008 10:20 (eighteen years ago)

According to IMDB, the guy in that link mentioned upthread is doing a remake of Logan's Run, no mention of Tron.

Did anyone besides code monkeys like this?? If it wasn't for Brisges' and Boxleitner's beauty I'd have turned it off.

Crackle Box, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 14:37 (fourteen years ago)

surely they didn't IMAX the '82 original?

(I can only imagine how awful the sequel was if it was a 'disappointment')

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 14 June 2017 21:51 (eight years ago)

this movie is so great. if they ever reboot this again they should try to mimic the wonderful og colorful vector style more closely.

Tron still appears as an answer in crossword puzzles to this very day, therefore it must be classic.
