I think we should find another board and take it over. We could do it.

This happened in the lapse of the original Pitchfork YaBB bulletin board. It was getting such ridiculous traffic each month that Ryan Schreiber would have been charged hundreds of dollars in overage fees each month, so he had to drop the board.

Of course, by that time the misfits over there had formed such a community that they went through a diaspora, searching out and temporarily squatting on all these other message boards. It's the only online nomadic tribe I've ever heard of. For a while it was other music zine boards, like FakeJazz and O-H-J, then it was on to Bass Fishing and Swedish radio stations, gothic vampire hovels and "IBS and You" boards ... all of this was entertaining at times, especially when you're supposed to be at work. Eventually the tribes found a (permanent?) home with a generous webmaster.

There is a danger here, as with all invasions. They invite reprisals. Be careful, young grasshopper ..

This type of thing was rampant on Usenet. (alt.fan.karl-malden.nose, anyone?)

BBS rivalries based on outlandish stereotyping = board wars = hell on net

would a true history of all this be like FANTASTICALLY FUNNY AND INTRIGUING or, er, not so much? As of this thread it sounds like the former.
